I rejoined SparkPeople because my last A1c and triglycerides are out of control. I though if I was real strict with myself and tried to increase my physical activity, I could bring things back under control. It has not happened, although I have had some lower readings this week. The night and early morning readings are high. I have tested all around different foods and excercise. I am waiting until bed-time to do the seated core video to see if that will impact the morning read. My follow-up appointment is Thursday, so on Monday I will keep a record of times, activities, food and reading for 3 days (I mean take every reading before, after and during excercises. There has to be some answer. My husband (and doctor) are encouraging that I go on insulin.

I have Type II Diabetes. My doctor and I have had a lot of conversation about this. He is more interested in what my BG reading is 1-2 hours after a meal (the spikes). I usually test 4-5 times a day some days: first thing in AM, 2 house after breakfast, dinner time, 2 hours after dinner and then right before bed time. By doing this I can get a better idea of what my A1C number is (approximately) because it is an average itself.

I know it seems like a lot, but I don't do this every day. Some days are just WAY too busy; as I am sure yours are too!

Pre Breakfast
Recently I changes my eating and my numbers have never been better. I'm getting reading in the 70,s, Yesterday my doctor said my A1C is down to 4.9 and I could cut down my medicine. One thing I did was stop eating wheat and potatoes, especially at dinner, I celebrated the good report and ate bread and potatoes, My number was 105 today.

I usually test pre-breakfast. I have found that if my FBS is high in the morning, it has a lot to do with what I ate the night before. So if you want or need a reading in the low hundreds or below, you need to start watching what you are eating and perhaps have that type of meal earlier in the day and have veggies, fruits and lean protein for dinner. Eating nuts and fruits that do not spike your blood sugar usually helps. emoticon

I am definitely getting wacky fasting levels, so i am testing a lot, recording everything that goes into my mouth, and have reloaded the diabetic food planner.

Recently did 5 day glucose monitor. Real eye opener as to what carbs do what. Ask your doctor about a test like this. You will keep a detailed journal of what you eat and activity.
Use the test to give you an idea what carb do what and how activity effects blood sugar. At the end nurse will help analyze the results

I test (by my doc's recommendation) 5 to 10 times a day. Definitely 5 (upon waking, pre-breakfast, pre-lunch, pre-dinner, and before bed) and the other times are when my glucose levels are a little wacky, which they have been lately.

Today's reading have been wacky and high:
Wake-up --- 115
Before breakfast --- 318
Two-hours after meal --- 327

If my next reading is this high, going to have to call the doc's office. emoticon !!!!

SOJOURNE, I test(ed) 4 times a day as well. I found the stress of seeing it fluctuate so much so many days in a row was causing me to have inflated values and my blood pressure artificially rose. I cut back to once or twice a day as recommended by my doc and my stress levels have been better and my blood pressure is down.

That's one thing I have found so far in my experiment, the correlation of stress to blood pressure and glucose levels in turn.

I ALWAYS test at least 4 times a day (pre- meals, pre-bed time). It is the only way I know how well I'm doing throughout the day.

Happy to see everyone's postings. Just another bit of great news to report. Today I had a complete eye exam which showed no diabetic eye damage. Blood pressure was 119/61. Great news. I was worried that the diabetes may have effected my vision as it has for a couple of friends. Diabetes is truly a whole body disease.

I've had the insulin pump for almost two month now & the sensor for two weeks. I test before I eat & two hours afterwards. Then I test before I exercise & also at bed time. I'm trying to get my levels under control & stop having lows. My BS numbers are all over the place.

I try to check everytime I eat, and whenever I feel "off"...sometimes I get lazy and only do a morning/evening check, but try to be good about it. My sugars aren't consistent - I'm good at checking, not so great at tracking. I've just downloaded a phone app where I can track everything down. (I have a pump, I put everything in there - and my Dr.'s can download, I just haven't been tracking myself).

I was diagnosed in April 2013. I test before breakfast and at bedtime. I always have a higher number in the mornings, even though I take 500 mg of Metformin at bedtime!

I was diagnosed in 2008. I, too, became overconfident and stopped taking meds as well as eating properly. In May of this year, I went in for labs because I was going to have neck surgery. When the labs came in I was told to head over to the ER because my BS was out of control. I am fortunate that both times (in 2008 and now) I did not go into a diabetes comma. I am also fortunate I have not done any damage to my internal organs from my over-confidence. I am here, thanks to my son encouraging me to do so. I know I must take care of myself if I don't want to check out earlier than what is in God's plan. For me, I must follow doctor's orders and test-test-test, take my meds, meds, meds, eat healthy, healthy, healthy and EXERCISE! emoticon

Kazzie, you deserve congrats on any different levels. My aunt died from a diabetic coma. And many family members did not (at that time) have a grasp about what a total body disease diabetes is. After all, if My aunt had just cut out sugar she would still be alive....? So much more complicated than that. You have come such a long way with your battle to manage this disease.

In a nutshell, my aunt's death made a real impact on my life. I can only partially repay that debt by fighting to not follow in her steps. Miss her dearly. Regards--Cris

You are so right!!! You must check daily. And one can't get over confident.
Your a1c is great. When I was first diagnosed my a1c was 14.9 and BS was 795. That's why I had a seizure. I was very lucky to wake up they said.
Now my a1c is down to 8 and BS hoovers around 120.
Have a great BS day..... emoticon

These posts serve to show us how diabetes can effect us differently. For quite sometime, my BS readings have been in the Low 90s mid morning, or for pretty much any other time I checked. As a result, I got too confident and weeks would go by between testings. Well, about two weeks ago, symptoms of low blood sugar levels showed up. Grabbed the monitor, and these results were in the 80s and upper 70s. What many would still call normal, does not appear the case for me. A lesson learned. Checking daily. a1c, last check, was 5.8. But cannot get over confident!

Since starting SP I have been testing:
When I first awake
After lunch
After dinner
Sometimes before bed
I have been testing like this to see how I am reacting to my healthy eating habits.
I started out with a 200 plus awaking...now 120
300 plus after meals...now below 140
Bedtime was in the mid 200's...now under 140
I used to take Humalog x 3 a day...now quit that and take Metformin x 2 a day
I still take Lantus 45 units once a day
So you can see that since being on SP I have improved substantially.

I am having trouble knowing when is best to read mine. I work midnights. I am up and down during the day.(more then I would be if I were sleeping at night). I have trouble grazing at work at night. I am a dispatcher and we are mostly stuck at our desk. For years now I wonder how I kicked my smoking habit of 3 pks a day and can't stop grazing here at my desk overnight.

Also taking my med the dr put me on starting yesterday. I should take it at breakfast when I get home, but then days off my schedule flip flops and I am trying to do during the day what I am use to doing at night. So taking my meds, checking my glucose and meals are all messed up on days off..

It gets harder all the time trying to figure out what is best if any of you have any ideas, I would so appreciate it.

Annebellebunny ~ If you have Type 2, hormonal changes overnight will naturally cause your blood sugar to rise. Here is one description of what happens:

"There are a couple of things going on that make your glucose rise in the morning. One of these is insulin resistance—a condition that means your body's muscle and fat cells are unable to use insulin effectively to lower blood glucose. However, insulin resistance also affects how your liver processes, stores, and releases sugar, particularly at night. The liver is supposed to release small amounts of glucose when you're not eating. But in type 2 diabetes, the liver dumps more glucose than is needed into the bloodstream, especially at night. So, while your hormones are causing a natural rise in blood glucose, your liver is releasing even more sugar into your system. And because your insulin resistance prevents your muscle and fat cells from using the sugar, your blood glucose level rises."

Some things that may help lower your morning readings:
- Have a small carb-friendly snack before bed. This will reduce the time between your last meal of the day and when you wake.
- Do some aerobic activity during the day. I read one article that said 15 minutes walks after each meal had significant effects on blood sugar.
- Make sure you are taking your meds properly

... And do just what you are doing here: lose weight! It takes time but you are on the right path.

I test before breakfast, before dinner and before bed...
It is always very high in the morning...183 or so...before bed 145...don't get it?
When I can't get the numbers down it is very discouraging.

Everyone is given slightly different instructions - I am of the test, test, test camp - the more I test and the more different circumstances I test in, the better I understand how MY BODY responds to specific foods, exercise, etc.

To answer the specific question, you can test AFTER dinner if you choose, but note that it was done AFTER dinner because it is likely to be higher than your pre-dinner reading would have been

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

My doctor recommends prebreakfast testing. He also recommends 2 hrs after a meal on occasion to see how I'm responding to the meal and if I want a bedtime snack test if its below 150 go for it above hold off on the snack.

You may want to test 1 1/2 - 2 hours after dinner. This will give you a reading about how you reacted to your dinner.

Testing allows us to understand what works for us -- and what doesn't work for us. When we test before breakfast, we are essentially testing our fasting blood glucose. We document how our blood sugar rises or falls while sleeping. Testing before a meal and after a meal, we mark how our blood reacts to food -- and when certain foods make our blood spike.

It is fairly common for a doctor to prescribe testing before breakfast and before dinner. But, to really understand your diabetes, you need to test, test, and test. Check out this blog: http://alt-support-diabetes.org/index.php/
test-test-test to learn more about testing.

Hope this helps.
Kathy

My doc has me testing pre breakfast every other morning and pre dinner every other day, so I only have stick once/day. I forgot to do my pre dinner test, should I still take a reading tonight?
