The longer you wait to eat breakfast the higher that pre breakfast BS will be. That sets the stage for the rest of the day. I try to eat breakfast by 8 am at the latest and it works good for me

fbs: 156. I feel like I'm doing something terribly wrong with such high fbses, and my doctor says not to worry, that just makes me want to distrust my doctor. This thread is giving me hope.
Sugars go down two hours after eating breakfast, and continue going down to bedtime.
Thanks for sharing, everybody. 8-)

I have found through trial and error that my fasting morning blood sugars are lower if I have a little protein as my final snack. Usually I have string cheese or low fat cottage cheese. Since I have lost the weight and I am eating better and walking my FBS has gone down to 111. 114, 116, etc. Before it was in the 170-180 range. emoticon

my pre-breakfast numbers seem to always be very high (170's) but my pre lunch and pre-dinner numbers are on target. I do eat a higher carb snack about 8 pm, so that may be it?

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I'm beginning to think that the stress of the death of my sister-in-law (bad stress), added to the stress of the arrival of 8 kids and grandkids for Spring Break is responsible. Then add the stress of worrying about the morning highs is putting me into a stress loop. I will cut further back on the dinner carbs, and increase the dinner protein; that makes so much sense, that I should have thought of it myself. 8-)

That is a great suggestion - I also have found that if I check at night before having a snack and if my blood sugar is over 150 I don't have a night snack - under 150, I do and make sure it has protein, healthy fat and between 10-20 grams of carbs.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

MOOMSHINE

You may want to try making a switch up in your evening snack to include more proteins and healthy fats in place of carbohydrates to see if that helps lower your morning sugars.

"success345" You and I are at about the same place in our journey! I think we may also be about the same age, I am 65. Nice to see someone here with whom I have a bit in common

Hi Becky - I'm non-insulin type 2, and my morning blood sugars are almost always high, so I've gone back over My Trackers to find out what my day was like the day before the lows, as well as the day before the highs to see if there is a pattern, there. My doctor says my numbers aren't alarming, and I shouldn't stress about it since stress does raise the numbers. Keep on Tracking -- maybe you'll see a pattern, or maybe you'll become ok with it. Good Luck!

Thanks for all of the information! I am not on insulin, my doctor is trying to use oral medications first, but maybe we need to adjust when I take my medications.

Thanks Tanya; I have this effect even when not on insulin and I think it has to do with the cortisol cycle. Right now I am taking a small dose of long acting insulin and I suspect it may be running out about three hours before the next dose. However, my low BS at 4 am is between 89 and 90 and my higher before breakfast number is about 105 so I am satisfied with it where it is. I certainly don't want that middle of the nioght number to go any lower!

There are two reasons why your blood sugars levels may be high in the morning the dawn phenomenon and the Somogyi effect. This article provides more information that might be helpful in deciding how best to address the issue.

I just did a little research on forming habits such as daily exercise and eating healthy. It takes on average 66 days which is just over 9 weeks; It doesn't matter a great deal if you miss an occasional day but the early repetition is the most important! You are in the right place at the right time. Start out very carefully as you mean to go on weather it is drinking 8 glasses of water a day or exercising for 10 minutes a day. I know that I have already formed the habit of checking in here every day, watching very carefully what I eat and doing some form of exercise every day I am able and I have not quite hit the end of my four weeks., I find that very encouraging.

Ditto. Occurs for me consistently but as overall levels declined so did those morning readings.

If you check your blood sugar at about 4:30 in the morning it will likely be at it's lowest. Then it begins to rise until it will probably be about 20 points higher by breakfast time. This is called the sunrise phenomen. Some people have it and some don't I do. Therefore I count that very early morning BS before the spike as my FBS.

Has anyone experienced having higher blood sugar numbers in the morning than at night? My night reading was several hours after eating and I know I didn't eat anything in my sleep. Any thoughts as to how this is happening?
