New to this group also. Been T2 for about 6 years but have sugars well under control. I am using this challenge to lose about 25 more lbs in preparation for double hip surgery in October and January. My biggest problem was a 200 lb plateau that I was on for almost two years! I have a strong 6 day per week exercise program (3 days in the pool and three days on the bike/bowflex) and track all my food for a 1500 - 1800 calorie intake.

Tracking food, exercising, weight loss, sugar levels, nutrition.... it is all a balancing act that takes time and effort. It has resulted in a low level of insulin use and if I work harder I may get off insulin altogether. But that may be a stretch. I take 0-3 units before breakfast and up to 30 units before dinner (usually my biggest meal). My trends are:
Before Meal - 5.9
After Meal - 7.4
Average - 6.4

I think all is good but by being active in challenges such as this I always learn something new. I will be meeting with my diabetic nurse soon to validate my efforts and see if I need to modify some of my goals.

A work in progress for sure!

I know I put this somewhere else but I will restate it because I am doing it for me. This is the 2nd time doing this challenge and the 1st time was a big help. I have been on SparkPeople since Feb. 2014. I am a type 2 diabetic and I am joining to keep myself on track and hopefully get off of some medications and get my blood sugars back down. I am here to kick diabetes in the butt!!! emoticon

I'm rejoining this challenge. I've recommitted to a healthy diet and exercise plan starting December 31, signed up with a personal trainer and have been tracking exercise and food consumption daily. My numbers have started to go down in the morning so I'm hoping this challenge will help me stay on track - hoping that by the end of the eight weeks I may be able to reduce my medication intake and have a better A1C.

I am new to this group and would like to lose weight and get healthy in the process. I have been a Type 2 diabetic for 13 years now (diagnosed in my early 60s') and now am 76. I don't know about the exercise part of this program, but can someone tell me what this challenge is about? Would appreciate all the help I can get.

Hi LTfromBC emoticon for making the start again,

Please do not despair. You can do it. Use these the diabetes challenges. Good info, good support.

I am just starting again too. I have been down some of the road you are on. The other thing that hypothyroidism does is make us feel sluggish or slow thinking, unempowered, a bit depressed. Keep in mind that it is not you, emoticon but your thyroxin levels out of sync.
Once your levels are stabilised you will feel better and regain your confidence. It can take a while. Just getting your gut moving properly will be such a good feeling. Then you will lose weight.

The high blood pressure is usually a smaller matter. Just get the right amount of medication and you're done, really.

Someone has probably already told you that losing the weight and increasing movement reduces the diabetes impact on your body. The blood sugars become more controllable. I am from a family prone to Type 2 diabetes and am on the edge of it. emoticon . Want to sit around all the time. Get grumpy when stretched! And I AM GROSSLY OVERWEIGHT! But have lost some weight this week.

Don't give up. If you want to we could be buddies for support?

Cheers, Clare

Starting week 1 day 1 Happy New Year - wishing everyone much success in the new year!
I need to get back on track with controlling my eating habits. Being disabled and having a hard time getting around, I will be doing the chair exercises. So glad that is available-never would have thought of that. By writing, I feel it makes me more accountable with my actions. My starting weight is 430.3 I am 30# heavier than I was 1 year ago, and didn't realize it until I logged in this morning.

Slow and steady always wins the race :)

Hi everyone. I have been a member of Spark People for a number of year, but sort of drifted away. I am currently dealing with high blood pressure, diabetes and hypothyroidism: one of these is bad, all three are horrible. I am caught in a vicious circle right now, that had made me question why I am even trying to lose weight. My metabolism is so slow due to my wonky thyroid and it is almost impossible to loose the weight but because I cannot loose the weight I now have diabetes and high blood pressure. When I first started to lose weight, I lost 40 pounds in 6 months and then it stopped and there was no movement. A year later, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and it has been a nightmare ever since. BUT, I am going to try again. I hope this challenge will help me, where past attempts have not.

There is no such thing as failure: only early attempts at success!

This is my second week of this challenge. I have been diagnosed as borderline diabetic. My worse nightmare is becoming too much of a reality. But, I have a chance to turn it around. I've had to make a lot of lifestyle changes. Old habits can be hard to break but I'm working on it. I have been to see a nutritionist (order by my doctor). Trying to become more aware of what I'm eating. But, I can't turn back now I have to do this. I'm exercising more which is a big thing for me. I'm looking forward to being apart of this challenge and meeting new people.

HI! My name is Steven. I'm a retired high school teacher. Husband, father, grandfather, and an author. I'm 50 pounds overweight, and prediabetic. I'm on the South Beach Diet, by my cardiologist's advice. So far this diet is a no brainer, except you do need to know your way around your kitchen. This is day 6 of the diet and I''ve lost 3.5 pounds.

Good luck to All!

Hi everyone, I just joined the challenge hoping to learn to be a better healthier diabetic. I was diagnosed more then 10 years ago but never did anything to change my lifestyle. Now that I am 54 and my Dr. is threatening to put me on insulin if I don't get my A1C down ,( I went from 13.8 to 7.5, but he wants it even lower than that.) At the moment I am on 2 different oral medications, but I struggle with the diet and exercise. Maybe this challenge with help with all that.

Just joined this challenge. I was on SparkPeople several years ago but dropped out. Diagnosed with Type II Jan. 10, 2014. Changed my diet, lost some weight & brought my A1C down from 10.5 to 6.8 in 5 months. But, even though my A1C is now 6.2, my weight is creeping back up again. I have some mobility issues and it's really challenging to exercise; I'm hoping that being on SparkPeople again will help me stay motivated.
Nice to meet everyone!

Why not go out on a limb? Isn't that where all the fruit is?

Fairly new to sparkpeople and need a challenge to stay focused on a recent diagnosis of diabetes. Did really well for first few months lost 17lbs and dropped AC1 from 8.6 to 6.8. But the last couple of months with crazy work schedule (at desk) and holidays has my AC1 back to 7.2 and only down 13lbs. I am ready to take this to a new level.

New to this challenge but not SP. I'm prediabetic with two insulin dependent parents although mom died two years ago. I'm 50 lbs overweight. I'm fighting to not be diagnosed with full blown diabetes. I just started working on controlling my carbs.

I made it through the first week and managed to lose a pound. It is harder to lose weight when you are over 70. We do try to work out three times a week though. We have Silver Sneakers so going to the gym is free.

I restarted, and made it through this first week. It's very important to me that I stay on track.... which means tracking of course. I was much better at it this week than in the past... but onward, upward, and pressing forward.

Hello. I'm Elayne and I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes on June 15. My FBS was 148 and my A1C was 6.6. I'm going to two classes at 2 hrs. each at my Ins. office/wellness center.on July 21 and the 28th. I'm hoping to ger some answers there. Like, how many carbs and calories a day for me peresonally..not just a general number for everyone. I also need to lose about 10 pounds that I have gained over thie past year. I'm looking forward to starting this challenge. I am almost 67 (Sept) and I am wanting to be as good as I can be with all the issues I have and this diagnosis on top of everything else. I already have Stage 3 Kidney Disease.

Anyway, you now know more about me.Glad I'm here.

Hi... I'm new. I've been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. But my doctor seems to believe I'm on the latter edge of the "pre" part of it. I'm really wanting to turn my health around. My biggest deterrent right now is that I just had my first (and I hope only) attack of Gout in my left foot. Does anyone know anything or any resources (books, websites, etc.) about Gout and diet? It seems that I get conflicting/confusing information. I'll never look at a bag of cherries the same way again!

Thanks!!

Hi! I am new to the Diabetes challenge even though I have been a Spark member on and off for about a year and a half. It's time to get serious! Tracking my food and staying within my ranges is going okay most days. The key seems to be creating a routine that works for each of us :)

I am new to this challenge, but not new to Diabetes. My Mother had diabetes for 20 years before she died 2 months ago. She also had Alzheimer's Disease which made life difficult because she could never remember if she took her meds or checked her BS. Her BS's became better controlled after she moved in with my sister, but struggled with her weight because of her poor food choices and the lack of my sister's education about food. I have been able to avoid diabetes, but as I get older my weight continues to climb along with my waistline! I am here to learn all I can!

CARLIESHKA1 - Hi there! Welcome and best wishes on your journey to learning how to control your glucose without meds! Trust me, it's best for you if you can. Sadly, I still need my meds but I do feel much better when I eat many small meals, eat the right types and mixes of food, and it does help to lower how much medicine I need to take.

Hi - I've been using Sparkpeople off and on since 2004 and I've had Diabetes since then as well. I was actually doing good in the 2008 - 2010 timefrme, but then I had a major life event and I spiraled out of control, leading me to a 60 lb weight gain. I think I'm finally ready to take control again and thought this challenge would be a good way to start. It gives me a challenge, holds me accountable and allows me to interact and give/get motivation along the way. Let's do this together!

I'm new to the challenge and the diagnosis. My fasting sugars are slightly elevated a few days each week so my doctor wants to start me on metformin. I truly don't want this and hope this forums exercise will assist me with the weight loss I need.

I also discovered I was diabetic in 2004. I would be happy to stay in touch with you, as I can use all the support I can get. I signed up for the challenge but have not participated until today. Betty
