Hi. Welcome to SP. I will be 67 this month and am also on Coumadin. I have over 100 pounds to lose. And I struggle keeping my numbers good. I have been walking for 2 months and am even able to jog a little now. The neuropathy and arthritis in my feet doesn't always bother me if I wear a good shoe. My weight loss is 20 pounds. I hope you find SP as helpful as I have. There are so many things here to motivate you and educate y emoticon ou. Enjoy the journey.

CATDEE - emoticon to the team!! So glad you could join us. There's a lot to learn on this challenge so just take it one step and one day at a time. emoticon .

If you haven't already done so, please go to the SITE GUIDE at the top of your Start Page and go through the Welcome Guide and the Site Tour Video. These will both help you to learn about the site and help you get around t.

Next, go to the ARTICLES & VIDEOS section also located at the top of your Start Page. It is here that you can learn so many different things. Learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes, symptoms of diabetes, and the complications that can happen with uncontrolled diabetes. You will also be able to find videos of different exercises, recipes, motivation etc.

Now, go to the My Trackers. It is here where you'll find probably the two most beneficial tools to help you with your journey.

1) MY NUTRITION TRACKER. This is a great tool. It will give you excellent feedback as to whether or not you need to increase or decrease the number of calories, carbs, fats, and protein each day.

2) MY FITNESS tracker will help you to become accountable to yourself.

Eat your 3 meals and 1-3 snacks a day. The snacks will help you keep from over eating at the next meal as well as help to keep your blood sugars under control and keep your metabolism working the way it should.

Set yourself some small goals - something that you know you will succeed at such as eating so many "freggies" (fruits and vegetables) emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon a certain number of days to start, or increasing your non-calorie fluids emoticon so many in a day and so many times a week, or even 7-9 hours of sleep emoticon so many nights a week.

Try to get 10 minutes of exercise emoticon emoticon in each day. If 10 minutes is too much for you at one time, then go for two 5-minute exercises. All the minutes and steps all add up to weight loss emoticon .

Two things to remember are:

1) You are never alone on this new healthy lifestyle. We are all going through this journey together and

2) YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!! We are here to help support and encourage one another.

If you have any questions, please feel free to voice them in your Weekly Discussions. Let us know about your day, your successes etc. There's always someone lurking around the site to help, support, and encourage you and each other.

Now that your introduction to the team is done, go to the Weekly Discussions 1-8 and let's get started!!! emoticon and together emoticon .

Have fun and enjoy your journey!

LINDA - Try to stay within your dietary guidelines. You must eat to lose weight. Also, the carbs are needed to feed the organs as well as the brain so don't eat too little of carbs either. Are you keeping track of your foods? If you don't eat enough then your body will go into starvation mode and will hang on to everything it can get thinking it won't be getting anymore to eat for the day. That's where the snacks come in at. The snacks (1-3) will help you to not over eat at the next meal, keeps your BSs from spiking or crashing, and helps to keep your metabolism moving.

HERNET - emoticon job on your weight loss!! You are not alone on this journey as we are all on here with you. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and depression. Just be sure that you eat your 3 meals a day AND 1-3 snacks a day to keep your metabolism working a well as keeps you from overeating at the next meal and also keeps your BSs from spiking and/or crashing. Just stay within your nutrition limits given to you by the dietician and/or dr. You must eat to lose weight. Keep posting and keep us informed on how you're doing each day if possible.

I am exactly where you are. I exercise every day except for life's distractions and stick pretty close to the calorie limit. I have found that I only lose weight after an hour of cardio exercise a day consistently. I need to lose a minimum of 20 pounds, which looks out of reach at this time. For the past year I have ignored my diabetes and have been on the regular diet plan on this website. It has kept my weight stable but no weight loss. I have lost about 6 pounds since going on the diabetic meal plan, but I also started to get pretty depressed. I am so happy to be in communication with others who are diabetic and to be able to learn from their strategies.
Good luck to all of you.

New to the team and also new to the diabetes diagnosis. I am 59 with several health problems. I really want to get diabetes under control. I have eaten so many carbs through the years. Exercise is not my problem. I exercise everyday and walk a lot. Somedays I walk 10,000 steps but normally between 6,000 - 8,000. My real problem is that I am not eating right - although I do track on Spark. I need to eat below the calorie range on Spark in order to lose weight.

HI,
My name is Helen and I feel the same way you do, so we have a something in common.

I too am retired medical secretary and trying to control and lose weight is not an easy task.

I log everyday and each day try harder to stay on track, every now and then I slip but get right back on track.

I too am not losing even tho I think I should be, I just purchased the little tracker hoping that will also keep me motivateed.

Hope to hear from you to share our journey.

I am not sure either of how it works keep searching for more info.
If I find something that helps I will email you the link.

Oh, I work from home 4 days a week, 4 hours a day so I am checking in between for ways to keep focused.

Have a slimming day!!!

May you always have Love to share, Health to spare, and Friends who care

I am 72 yrs old. Have been Diabetic for 30 yrs. I also had a stroke in 2013 and am on Coumadin. I have a bad knee and some neuropathy in my feet,so I'm having trouble walking,so the walking part will be a challenge. I just got a rollator/walker which has a seat ,so I can sit down if I get tired ,or my knee pain is too bad.Myy biggest challenge is I don't know what to eat. I have tried to eat leafy greens and fruit most of my life, but now I have to eat foods with Vit K sparingly. The allowed veggies, are high on carbs, which I have to limit due to DM.I also have to watch sodium and fats. I'm meeting with a dietician next week,so I have hope.Does anyone know if there is a way to track carbohydrates and/or vitamin K on Sparks??

I think the challenge is to find a personal reason to lose weight and stick to it. Both can be challenges! Pacarolsue has the right idea. She wants to be able to SEE her family and WALK on her own two feet! What good reasons! My mother lost a foot due to gangrene. Her type 2 diabetes acerbated the problem. You would think that would be a good reason for me to lose weight. It is but I still need help. I still need prodding to remind me of the things that help me. Especially when I'm not feeling so hot. That is the biggest challenge for me: to lose weight despite how I'm feeling! But Knowledge is Power, Share the Power.

Good luck to us all, and keep trying.

I am not sure I understand how this challenge works, but I have to do something and this just might be what I need, so I will jump in with both feet. I am not one to track my food, so that will be a big part of this challenge for me.

I am a retired senior citizen. I was diagnosed with type 2 in 2008 and it is believed that I had it for a while before then. Sometimes I decide that I don't want to be diabetic and I get myself all screwed up. Lately I have been getting it in better control, but I'm not losing any weight, which I know is an important part of the equation. I also have other medical issues but want to be healthy for whatever's left of my life. I want to be able to SEE my family and surroundings, and I want to be able to WALK on my own two feet.

AT 64.6 yrs old, I keep telling myself I am just too old to be worried about everything I eat and how much I exercise. Mom/hubby are diabetics so I know how it works, I have been the care giver for them (diabetes) for 10 years now. Told I was a diabetic in Dec.2013 and I cannot get my head wrapped around it. I have bad feet (surgery 2013) so it is hard to do a lot of walking. I stand 8 hrs a day for my job some when I get home, the last thing I want to do is walk!!!

Just getting RESTARTED on SparkPeople...finding out I'm now diabetic has made losing the weight more urgent, and yet I've found more difficult as I try to keep good blood glucose levels throughout the day. Thought this challenge would help me stay focused...Looking to lose 15 lbs during the 8 week challenge..

I love my Fitbit Flex. I am not constantly checking for my steps because I need to connect to the computer to find the exact amount. I added the fitbit app to my kindle fire and do my nutrition count there as it is much easier for me than the Spark tracker. I have a good start and hope that my other health issues can behave for me to get through the challenge. emoticon I have increased my step goal to 5000 steps a day and may raise it again after my nerve ablation in a couple of weeks. emoticon

ya- when I eat 1500 calories a day I gain weight. Fitbit Flex is a step tracker. There are several different types - fitbitone is another. Check it out at fitbit.com. Tracking is good! - both food and steps.

The hard part for me ir calorie amounts. My diabetes educator says 1200 calories a day while Spark people says over 1600 calories a day. That's a big difference to me. At least I'm back tracking what I eat again.

Have fibro??--shucks! I can't even spell it so how can I have it?!

I. have 6 stubborn lbs to lose and wanted to get back into control of my eating. I bought a fitbit flex and it syncs with sparkpeople. I like the food tracker, etc on sparkpeople so I use both sites. Just wearing the flex has given me the motivation to get back in control. I haven't lost any weight since I started a month ago (gone up and down) but am feeling better toned and blood sugars are back where they should be most of the time. It is a constant for the rest of our lives! Hang in there!

I think the main thing for me is I forgot how to take baby steps. I got all caught up in the frazzle of life, the struggles we have all (most) gone through over the last several years. I ate for all the wrong reasons and ruined by body and health. After doctor diet plans and quick weight loss 'solutions' for particular purposes, like getting a new better job etc., I have realized that this is all an inside job that was never done. There is no other way than consistent baby steps, growing yourself past weird diet ideas, hopelessness, and re-learn basic skills like listening to my body, focusing on today and not the whole problem, keeping the food consumption inside some kind of limits, moderation, etc. At 62 I won't ever be physically what I was when younger, but I can be better than this. Much better. And each day is a step along the way.

I originally joined SparkPeople to cheer my mom on in her weight loss after she was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago. Last week I was diagnosed with Gestational diabetes. I am not purposeful in my exercise, so I need this encouragement to begin the discipline. I am ready to exercise (and eat more protein) for my sweet baby girl!

I just re-joined this challenge. I completed this challenge successfully a couple of years ago and I've got about 10-15 more stubborn pounds I'd like to lose. I've been unmotivated to exercise alot lately and in the past the exercise videos here on this challenge really got me going so I'm back to kick start my fitness routine!!

Hi, LSAVELA.
I just 're-booted" my efforts with the 8-week diabetes weght loss challenge. I have just re-worked my success or lack of success factors in my journal. I have just realized I do not like logging my stats into paper notebooks. I loose them I do not get opportunity to analyize them for details, but I have found this tracker to do all of the things I am interested in AND I can log items on my laptop while at work and on my phone while out and about or weekends.
The second face of my approaches is to realize I have the most energy and time to do exercise on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. Those are my highest energy level days of the week. I have gotton rid of the "start fresh on Monday attitude".

Bottom line is that my "re-fresh" on this challenge is to do a 5% reduction in weight loss (3 months): for me that is 13 pounds. (My set goal) Then I just "set my work out plan" on a post it note and put it on my door frame of my office; I can check it off as I do most of them in my office and enter info when I do my food tracking. (Tracker set) I have put that I will do a 4 day minimum of food tracking. I know that I will do my blood glucose at the same time so that is a freebee.

I also joined the group that is for people who have more than 100 pounds to loose and are over 50. This group has a few leaders that are very motivational. Fun mostly. I get good inspiration from them.

So I agree that I have not seen too many "Whoo Hoo" people on this board.. so I will try to be a better conversation person.

Whoo Whoo to you for being true to your observation. emoticon emoticon

Take in the compliments but don't let it go to your head unless you really are where you want to be! I understand what your'e feeling, that it's nice to have the compliments, I felt that way too.
But I have gained back, part of the 118 pounds I lost originally.
Anyway, would you like to be my SparkFriend and we can work at this together, I'd really like that. Check out my last blog on my Spark Page and you will better understand where I am coming from!

Take care, Ali

I'm in, starting today! My blood sugars have been really wonky lately by nose diving a lot, so I'm starting by talking with my doc & Pharm D at Hines VA later this afternoon. Hopefully we can get a grip on this and maybe even adjust and/or take me off of the meal time insulin all together. That would be nice, then I'd be back down to taking just the Metformin & night time insulin. i'm already working out every day, and making better food choices but I still have a huge sweet tooth that needs to be curbed. This challenge will help that & boost my chances of losing this weight more effectively! Thank you guys in advance! emoticon

This official challenge was created by SparkPeople's coaches as a fun way for members to get motivation, tips and support while losing weight and managing diabetes. This SparkTeam works much like all other SparkTeams, except that it has a few special features and a set program you can follow. Here's how it works.

1. Join the Team. Click the "Join This Team" button at the top of the team page to become a member. If you're not already a SparkPeople.com member, you'll have to create a free account to join this challenge. Joining will mark the start of your eight-week challenge and trigger a set of four weekly emails to begin.

2. Read your challenge email each week. It contains action steps, helpful tips and articles, and all the info you need for the challenge. Keep in mind that daily 10-minute workouts are part of this challenge and you will need a resistance band to follow these workouts.

3. Complete the action steps in each email. When you're done, mark the checkbox at the top of the Team page to show that you completed the action steps each week. Checking these boxes is necessary to earn your trophy.

4. Earn your trophy. By completing the action steps in your emails, checking them off at the top of the Team page, and remaining on the Team for at least eight weeks, you will earn a special SparkTrophy for your SparkPage!

5. Work for prizes. There will be weekly giveaways for members of this Team who log at least 75 minutes of exercise each week AND make at least one post in the Team per week. Plus, one person per quarter will win a BIG prize pack! Official Prize Terms and Rules

That's it! You can also use the Team message boards to correspond with others who are following the challenge. When you're finished with the challenge, you can stay in this Team to help others, or try the challenge again if you'd like!
