I am new to this challenge, but not new to Diabetes. My Mother had diabetes for 20 years before she died 2 months ago. She also had Alzheimer's Disease which made life difficult because she could never remember if she took her meds or checked her BS. Her BS's became better controlled after she moved in with my sister, but struggled with her weight because of her poor food choices and the lack of my sister's education about food. I have been able to avoid diabetes, but as I get older my weight continues to climb along with my waistline! I am here to learn all I can!

CARLIESHKA1 - Hi there! Welcome and best wishes on your journey to learning how to control your glucose without meds! Trust me, it's best for you if you can. Sadly, I still need my meds but I do feel much better when I eat many small meals, eat the right types and mixes of food, and it does help to lower how much medicine I need to take.

Hi - I've been using Sparkpeople off and on since 2004 and I've had Diabetes since then as well. I was actually doing good in the 2008 - 2010 timefrme, but then I had a major life event and I spiraled out of control, leading me to a 60 lb weight gain. I think I'm finally ready to take control again and thought this challenge would be a good way to start. It gives me a challenge, holds me accountable and allows me to interact and give/get motivation along the way. Let's do this together!

I'm new to the challenge and the diagnosis. My fasting sugars are slightly elevated a few days each week so my doctor wants to start me on metformin. I truly don't want this and hope this forums exercise will assist me with the weight loss I need.

I also discovered I was diabetic in 2004. I would be happy to stay in touch with you, as I can use all the support I can get. I signed up for the challenge but have not participated until today. Betty

I am trying to learn as much as I can about my husband's Type 2 Diabetes as I can. He has gone from using oral medication only to both the oral meds + insulin and has that increased twice in the past 6 months.

Hi... I started this challenge a couple of days ago. Getting exercise isn't the issue...tracking food is. So... that's the real challenge for me this first week.

I just did my first seated exercise, and it helped me. I am disabled with Multiple Sclerosis, and now with Type 2 Diabetes, but the exercise videos are great!

I am not sure if I am doing this right, but I assume that posting here is one of my challages. So I am posting about what I have planned for this week. I am starting off with the chair cardio. I think I should be able to do this with no problems. We will see.

Hi! I joined this challenge to get my A1C under control. After moving from Florida back to Indiana this past July, I didn't do much in the way of watching my blood sugars or my weight. My A1C jumped from 8.2 up to 10 since then.

Since December I have lost 15 pounds and have my blood glucose in tighter control. I need something to keep me interested and challenged and this seems as good as anything to do that.

Need something and someone to help keep me accountable!!!

I'm in week three, but I've only just now completed the first weeks action steps. Better late than never! I started a new job this week and I travel a LOT - about 100-200 miles a day for my job, 3 days a week. I'm learning to bring healthy snacks but still need to make sure I'm getting in more exercise. My morning blood sugars aren't under 140 anymore and I need to get back to my doctor, but hopefully moving will help too.

I joined this challenge because about a year ago I fell on my concrete steps and injured my back. The doctor said I compressed my sciatic nerve between two of my vertebrae, before this injury I ran, hiked walked sometimes 4 miles, for the last year I have only walked occasionally I am ready to slowly get back into exercising and try to work some of the last years weight off and not to mention I hope this will help me manage my diabetes.

I just joined this challenge to help me get a better grip on my diabetes. I was diagnosed in 2004, but have been getting worse over the years. This challenge will help me with eating right and exercising. I have no one here at home to support my efforts, so I am requesting all the support I can get from the group.

Sandra
Best wishes to all.

This is a refresher course for me. I took this challenge a few years ago. But have not done any exercising for about a year. I had came down with Graves disease and had my thyroid killed by Doctors and my energy levels have been null. They are working on getting my thyroid levels normal. I'm gaining more strength and endurance again finally. So doing refresher to start workouts again and diet. I had gained 30 pound on my already overweight body when they killed my thyroid. I understand that is typical. I have at least 80 more pounds to lose. I have lost 23 over the last year. Hoping to get back on track.

Hello - I don't have type 2 diabetes as yet. I am showing the symptoms of prediabetes but with having had gestational diabetes and the fact that my father, uncle and brother are now type 2 I would like to be proactive in getting the correct healthly lifestyle in place. My aim is to take each week as it comes as I have done this challenge before but never made it passed week 1. So first goal - complete week one's activity plan.

See you in week 2 :-)

Hello everyone, I have about 50 lbs maybe 75 if my doctor will let me. She isn't on board with my weight being under 150 so I will probably stop there. I am 49 and want this weight off before I turn 50.

My sugar is running fairly good 100-110 fasting. That is with metformin, diet and exercise. My biggest problem is I hate to exercise if it's not in a pool or walking. So my daughter got me a membership at our local YMCA and one for her also, we have 3 pools now. She also went and got a dog that needs walking everyday, she works and goes to school full time so isn't home my to walk the dog so who get to walk him??? If you said "me, Dawn, mom" you are correct. LOL He likes mile walks everyday and if it's too cold out he wants his jacket on and doesn't mind the cold. So I will be getting more exercise in. We are thinking about trying "rowing" at the Y. We have tried it a few times and liked it so I think that is going to become a new regular for us. Our Y has a class coming up in December(where has this year gone???) that is a nutrition/work out planning class so we are signed up for it.

GARDENWITCH - emoticon . I'm 68 and from Weslaco, TX. You have some great goals set for yourself. Be sure to reward yourself for any accomplishments you've made throughout your goals. I've gone through this program twice myself and am astonished at how much more I learn each time. There's nothing wrong with being a "repeater" on this program. We also have a "new day" when you have those days that nothing seems to go right. There is a lot to learn on these challenges so just take it one step and one day at a time.

Some of those chair exercises are really what people at our age need once in a while. I get most of my exercise through walking our dogs with my hubby twice a day.

It's a blustery day down here also for us full timers in the deep RGV!! I've been in long pants and sweatshirts for the better part of 6-8 weeks now.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let us know as you do your daily postings. Have a great day and keep on Sparking!!!

My goal for this 8 week challenge is to "get in the groove" of daily tracking, daily walking, finding my way around SP, even though I am a returning member and getting my head in the right space. Any weight loss will be appreciated and a bonus.

I want to learn how to use all of those symbols that catch the eye. I want to learn how to personalize my page. I'm in for the long haul and hope this challenge is a repeater.

I am a somewhat active almost 70 yr. widow of 3 yrs.,a retired operating room nurse, a certifiied Herbalist and gardener who lives in the country with 2 dogs and a cat. I'm 23 miles from Kerrville, Texas, My name is gardenwitch because that is what you have to be to get anything to grow here in the rocky clay soil but I love it !!!

This morning found and did first 9-min chair upper body video. Figured I can do while watching tv in the evening.
It's a blustery very cool sunny day, Just perfect for a walk. Thanks for being here. gw

I, too, am returning with a new attitude, thanks to my determination to treat myself as I deserve to be treated. And I am entitled to feel my best, which means proper food and appropriate exercise. Very happy to be here.

The last time I lost a lot of weight (from 220 to 185), I reached a point where the scale got stuck. I was truly disappointed. Then I measured my waist, thigh, etc. and found that I had lost inches! I was converting the lightweight fat into heavyweight muscle! After a couple of weeks, the scale started to inch downward again.
Don't get discouraged! Measure your body and see if you are converting fluffy fat into useful muscle!

VIDEOZEE - Welcome to this great team/challenge. There's a lot of information here but just take it one day and one step at a time. Let me try to help you if I may.

At the top of your Start Page you will find My Trackers, Articles & Videos, Community, and Site Guide.

MY TRACKERS - Here you will find nutritional and fitness trackers. These two tools are probably the most used and helpful tools in our Program.

1) NUTRITIONAL TRACKER will give you great feedback on whether or not you need to increase/decrease your calories, carbs, fats, and protein. Try to fill out and use this tracker every day.

2) FITNESS TRACKER will help to keep you accountable to yourself. This is also a good tool to use daily.

ARTICLES & VIDEOS - - This section is where you will find information on diabetes - - what causes it, how to treat it, the complications of uncontrolled blood sugars and many other health issues that you might have or are interested in. You will also find videos on exercise, cooking, recipes etc. Look the section over.

COMMUNITY - - Here you will find Different Spark Teams you can join as well as different challenges, blogs, success stories etc. Again, look this section over and join in on some of them.

SITE GUIDE - - This will give you your Welcome Guide, Tour Video Guides, and answer many frequently asked questions.

First, set yourself up some small goals - - something that you know you will be able to achieve such as drinking a certain number of cups of non-calorie fluids each day/week; or, eating a certain number of "freggies" - fruits and vegetables - a certain number times of day/week; or, getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night a certain number of times per week.

Set your weight loss goal at nor more than 5-10% of your total pounds you want/need to lose - any more than that and you are apt to set yourself up for frustration and we all know what happens when we get frustrated!! We don't want that.

Eat your 3 meals a day and your 1-3 snacks daily. The snacks will help to keep you from being too hungry before the next meal, help keeps your metabolism going, and will help keep your BSs on a more even keel. Your last snack can be eaten as late as you want as long as you don't go over your allowed calories given to you by the dietician. If you eat too little calories (less than 1200) you will put your body into starvation mode where you body will hang on to everything feeling as though it wasn't going to get anymore food throughout the day and you will gain weight. Drinking water will help to keep the toxins flushed out of your body and help to fill you up as well.

Try to get in 10 minutes of exercise a day - if that is too much to do at one time, then do two 5-minutes sessions of exercise. All steps add up to better health and weight loss.

As I said, there is a lot of information on this team so take it one day and one step at a time. Don't strive to be perfect but instead strive for consistency.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let us know. There is always someone lurking around the corner close by and will gladly get back to help you real soon. You are never on this journey alone - we are all here to help, support, and encourage one another along our journey. YOU ARE WORTH IT!! emoticon and together emoticon .

Have fun and enjoy your journey.

JOPANK - First, congratulations on your losing 5# - emoticon . I am also 67 years old - it must have been a good year!! emoticon

Don't go by the scale itself. When the scale seems to get stuck, look back on how much weight you've already lost, not how much weight you have yet to lose. How are your clothes fitting? How much more energy do you have from before you started on this journey? You already know you BSs have been coming down a little.

For myself, I have found that if I stick to the top limit of my calorie allowance, I seem to lose better than at the low end. Some times it helps to go back and forth with your calorie allowance. Be sure you're eating your three meals a day and 1-3 snacks a day as well. The snacks is what helps you to keep from over eating at the next meal, helps to keep your blood sugars from spiking and/or crashing, and also helps to keep your metabolism running the way it should.

Wow! I've just joined SparkPeople and haven't even done anything beyond trying to figure out how everything works on the site and for the programs, but yours is the first post I've seen and read, and I'm so very inspired by your commitment and achievements. I don't even know you and I'm very excited for you. Yay!

Since my July 8 post I have lost 11 more pounds. It seems if I do my walking on softer surfaces my feet do not bother me much at all. So I am staying off the roads and on the country trails. My numbers are normally pretty low in the mornings(97 today). I am feeling better but don't have the energy everyone talks about. Maybe when I get closer to my goal I will have more energy. I certainly hope so. It really takes some effort to get 8500 steps in each day. But I am sticking with the program: nutrition, exercise, and strength training. emoticon emoticon
You will get there. Just gradually increase your walking and add a little strength training when you are ready. Remember that muscle burns more calories than fat and strength training builds muscles. Have fun with it. emoticon

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Your post most connected with me. I too am 67 and need to lose a good amount of weight (50 lbs plus). But would be thrilled with 5 lbs. for now! I've been walking at least 5 days a week for over a month now with the last week's intensity increased. My glucose level is down slightly but the scale is stuck. Help! :)

Have the rules changed from the original post? Wondering if we will still get the emails with some exercises and such. Thanks!
