Great job persevering the 5K! I would see a doctor who is an athlete and talk to him about the shin splints! Do whatever it takes, then you can get back on the road! All the best, and let us know how it plays out.

I had to stop training the prior two weeks to recover from shin splints. Come race day, my stamina was WAY down but I was able to persevere through the first mile and walk/jog the rest. It felt amazing to have accomplished something that was such a milestone for me. Unfortunately, my shins started hurting again the following week after my next run.

Like the Joker said in "The Dark Knight," "Why So Serious?" If you really want to focus on fun in your run, find a fun run!

Some of the most elite runners I run with, love to do fun runs! We're doing a beach 5K on the shores of Clearwater Beach this Saturday. The following Friday night, my run bud, Susan (She's qualified Boston Marathon four times!) guilt me into doing the Pajama 5K * Beer Blast! We also did the Girl Scout Thin Mint Sprint 5K!

Everyone knows I dress in pink drag when I do the Pretty in Pink and any run dealing with Breast Cancer! They are always asking me what I will wear for those upcoming races!
emoticon
The point I'm making is this. It doesn't have to be about always winning races and going for personal bests! I use fun runs for training and having a great time with my running friends!
emoticon
Find one, do it, take photos, and post them. Just check out my run reports on my Blogs! Yeaj, I'm a bit off but it's fun and I love my runs!
Cool Runnings to all!

Most runners aren't! And that's the beauty of it. It's one of my Secrets of Success! It's not about the speed of it all...although I can be a selective speed freak! It's a beautiful cardio workout that should be embraced AND can be fun! Just running for causes alone is so worth it. I sincerely hope you find the addiction!

I just want to report that I ran my 5K--a new personal best of 35:22.1. I had a pace of under 12 minutes. I will say "thank goodness for the push of competition" even though I was only racing the clock. I did it--3 down and I may be done! I certainly wondered about my sanity while out there running!

Great advice from Becky & Moby! I still have to watch my pace when I start off the lime...and I've done over 47 5Ks in the last 3.5 years!
emoticon
That's why I want everyone to find their own run in the beginning. The training plan provides for the time to transition to fully run a 5K. BUT, it doesn't address speed! The key is to find a pace you are comfortable with. After you've settled into running the complete 5K, should you desire, you can improve with speed training. Just focus on a comforting 6K pace. You'll get there!

5k races are fast races. You tend to run much faster than you normally do. Make sure you're towards the back so you aren't tempted to go out running faster than you're used to. Have you run 5k distances other than races? Sometimes you have to push yourself to keep running. Keep telling yourself that you can do it.

To run the whole race, you need to be able to run for long enough to complete it. It's clear that if you're able to run for 35 minutes, you should be able to cover 5K. You did that with some walking.

The 5K Your Way program works to get you up to running 40 minutes at the peak, which is easily enough for you to complete a 5K. If you get to race day and simply can't run the whole course, chances are you're running too fast. Slow down a little. Allow other runners to pass you, particularly at the start. Work on maintaining a slow enough pace that you can just run for 3.1 miles.

Once you have the ability to keep running for 3.1 miles, there's all the time in the world to work on how fast you do that.

My daughter, aka cluelessinkorea, and I ran a 5k yesterday morning. We have been running together for about two weeks. We have both trained in the past and this was a 2nd 5K for both of us. It was a much harder terrain that the last 5k. Lots of uphill and running on the road instead of a dirt trail. But we did and finished the race. My daughter did it 37 min. I know she could have done it in less time but she was kind and waited for her mother ;) . I did it 38 minutes! Woo Hoo. I did my second 5 K in 3 years. I am hoping to do an 8K in May!!

Thank You Kevin. I am hoping my brother will join me next year too. We should be able to run a much faster pace. It was cold but I was dressed just right for it. Ran pretty comfy.

I walked my first 5k last summer - July 4th.

On Thanksgiving, I RAN my first 5k. I didn't stop once. My time was 42:50.
Not bad for a 60 year old grandma. My brother ran with me. Felt so good to accomplish this!

Not my first 5K, but the first one since rehabbing from foot injury today. PR of 20:42 in a small race with perfect running weather. This is my 4th 5K since doing the 5K Your Way Running Program, and the first where I managed my pace really well.

More detail in today's blog.

Becca, this Thanksgiving I celebrate 3 years of racing 5Ks to Half Marathons to Triathlons. In that time, I've had to start over 4 times due to injury or illness. It doesn't take that long to get back in the groove if you come back at a reasonable pace and listen to your body! Pacing is everything. This past weekend, I did my 5K PR! It convinced me I haven't reached my very best yet. I still amazed as I started when I was 60! You have a lot of PRs waiting for you. Cool Runnings!

I have very vivid memories of my first 5k. It was the Chase Race for the YMCA back in June of 2009. I ran with a friend of mine who was great at pushing me to keep going. I finished in 34:03.
SInce then I have ran numerous 5ks, a few 10k's, and 3 halfs. I got pregnant last October and was restricted from running my entire pregnancy. I feel like I am completely starting over.
I did run a 5k back in August just 2 weeks after getting the all clear from my doctor. I finished this race in 34:45.

Today I ran my first 5K since starting this program. I had only completed two sessions. I was able to run the entire thing! My final time was 32:30. I am pretty happy with that but I look forward to seeing if after I complete the program if I am able to get a better time.

To all of you for completing that 1st 5K! Excellent times all around.

I have to share that at my latest 5K this past Sunday, I noticed many people using the "interval" game plan for their 5Ks. It's effective and can boost your speed. It impacts even more on 10Ks, Half Marathons, and even Marathons. I've spoken to many experienced runners who swear by intervals. That one minute of recovery can be priceless. You can adjust your intervals accordingly and it can build you up to the point where you can choose to run the entire 5K.
Stay strong, fuel clean, and train well!

I finished my first 5K on Saturday, May 11th. I did have to take a few walk breaks but held them to a minimal amount of time. I finished at 37.4 which I guess I am satisfied with as I had been doing 42 minutes on the treadmill. Probably won't get to run another competitive one now until the middle of June - so have my goal set to make it thru it all without walking

I just ran my first 5k yesterday! I choose a slow and steady pace and was able to jog the whole thing without walking. I finished in 37 minutes, it felt so good crossing that finish line with everyone cheering on.
I'm already excited to run another one and then another one. Hoping each race I can shed a couple minutes off my time.

I ran my first 5k in May of 2011, and it was raining and cold and I caught a really bad cold the wednesday before the race but I was determined to run the race, to finish the race and to not come in last. Well I did all 3, but I ended up with bronchitis after all was said and done. But after that first race I had the run bug. Then is 2012 my husband joined me on my second 5k and he finished before me but I was so happy that he enjoyed himself. My husband just ran another 5k with me. I just did my 3rd 5k a few weeks ago and this was not a good race for me, my time was bad and I had some trouble catching my breath at the end. I had some leg pain and some pain in the bottom of my foot and I ended up with shin splints. But once again I finished and I was not last. So now I am trying to train to do another 5k and hopefully improve my time. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I ran my first 5K in October 2011. It was the first time that I ran something timed and with other people. Up until that 5K I just ran for the "fun" of it and more for the "fit" of it. That run was finished in 35 minutes.

A few years later I did my next 5K, a Turkey Trot, that run time was 39:23. I felt like I had slid back.. Today I accomplished a long time coming goal 13.1 miles and I FEEL GREAT!
After this run, I am back on the 5K circuit with one in May and another one in September, and there will probably be a few more after that. But you know what I am most proud of, I went from HATING running to loving it and to loving the feeling of being out running and hearing people cheering me on- not knowing me and not knowing how far I have come to get to that moment.
Congratulations to all of you who continue to push yourselves to make it out and run! You are all awesome!

We definitely need a forum where we can just discuss whatever. The forums here are too limited. Thanks MIRAGE for updating!

Can I post on any discussion that relates to what im going thur? Is there a place i checkin my C25K training when im done for the day? Thank you...

Outstanding, Nikkii! Embrace it and enjoy all that great training you're doing! I remember that I repeated a week or two as well when I first started this program. I just wanted to make sure I was there.

Im now doing treadmill once a week, outside track onces a week, and outside route onces a week. Im on a mission and taking no more luggage on this journey, staying focus, keeping God first, and staying consistent. Will be running in the i5K in april with the rest of the virtual team im on. I started running in only August last year and decided to sign up for a 5k in September as a challenge and really on a whim. I read a lot before the race, I placed myself in the back of the race pack purposely, I was constantly telling myself go slow, at the half way point, I finally told myself I could pick up the pace. I started passing people and it felt great, I finished the race 10 minutes faster than I thought, (my cheering squad wasn't there) I had no idea I would have finished under 34 minutes. I never thought I would become addicted to running, I get the saying a runners high. I signed up for two more races right after that. Now I am currently training for a 10k, if you knew me before you would never have imagined that I could run at all.

I also found that when I ran that first race, I paced myself behind two girls that were going way to slow. Once I was able to get past them and go at my own pace, I felt better. As I ran more 5k's, I learned to concentrate on what I was doing and go by the pace I was more comfortable with, not someone else's pace. Too bad I have to start all over again now since I've pretty much been treadmill running only.

I completed my first 5K race in October 2012 for the Susan G. Koman race in Dallas, Texas. It was so exciting. It was very crowded and I didn't get to take off jogging until after I had reached the first mile but I was super excited. I have not done once since but I plan on doing one this summer. I could not jog the entire thing but hopefully I will be able to the next time. I was just excited to complete it.

Proper pace is everything, BECKYANNE! Thanks for sharing. And I am STILL trying to get the right one down for my runs, no matter the distance.

I have to restrain myself and not be distracted by other runners. I pick up someone's pace and it is a recipe for disaster. But, we're learning, right? I'm always thrilled when I read about someone's finish and their feelings. I hardly every post my times on my blogs. They're irrelevant. The fact that one enters a race and finishes is everything. I know more experienced & "elite" runners work for speed. That's wonderful.

For those of us that do it primarily for health, finishing with good effort is a worthy goal. I think anyone working on beating their personal best, will more than satisfy their need for competition. In any case, I think running 5Ks, casually or otherwise, keeps one in good health.

My first 5k was last June. It's called the BK5K and it raises money for the schools around here. It was started by the owner of a company called Fastenal. There were under 1000 runners and of course I started out too fast. I did manage to run the whole thing, but I felt like dying by the time I reached the end. It was an amazing feeling to reach the finish line though. That day I really felt like I accomplished something! About 10 min. after I finished, it started raining and it poured.

You never forget your first 5K! I love other runner's views so here's your chance. I think it's vital to share and let others know what to expect. My first was the St Petersburg Times Turkey Trot. It was an intimate little race with about 14,000 of my closest Tampa Bay friends!

I will share that my time was 59.54. I felt so good and proud when I crossed the finish line.I never knew I would become an addict.
