First of all, you are doing great and I am so proud of you! The issue may not be how you are breathing but your pacing. Believe it or not, you may be running too fast. Slow down your run portions OR lengthen your walking interval. When I am starting to breathe hard, I slow down and that usually does the trick.

Hi, I just finished week 3 of the training plan. My biggest issue is breathing during the run. I find that by the end of each run (whether it was week 1, one minute, week 2, 1.5 minute or week 3, two minutes) I am struggling to breath and running any longer seems impossible (which I know is misleading as each week, I'm able to extend my running durations).

What is the best way to breath? I am breathing through my mouth, both inhaling and exhaling. Should breaths be shallow or deep? I've been able to fully recoup my stamina during the walks after each run, but just wonder if there are breathing tips that would make the runs a little easier.

That is not a goofball question at all! This is what I would say the majority of run/walk runners use.

As long as you are running at an easy pace and taking a day off between running days you will be fine especially at the beginning stages. You are doing great!

I'm strength-training along with my 5K program. Two days ago I did a lot of strength-training leg work and was quite sore the next day (not an injury, just a good workout). I ran my planned training day and it was very difficult to finish. I realize now I should take a day off in between, but that's not always possible. Am I hurting or helping my running goals when I push through the run [when I don't take a day off]? Thank you!

Hello, I started day 1 week 1 today. I have been walking on a treadmill for a long time now. so today I dediced to use the inside track. My question is what can I do to strengthen my knee? I noticed pain on impact. It felt like something was trying to slide under my knee cap and on the upper knee felt like something was pushing the knee cap down. I only felt it when I ran for my minute. Is this normal or should I have it checked? When I was walking it didnt' bother me.

LARKSONGRUTH thank you for your honesty. I found week four REALLY hard and I feel so encouraged that it wasn't just me. I had to increase my walk/run times to 2.5 minutes each just to catch my breath enough to make it through the next interval. Still, I finished 2.14mi in 29 minutes. My plan is to run a virtual race on March 3 and then start the next 5k My Way program so I can beat my record in the Chocolate Race (yes, you read that right. They feed you chocolate at the first aid stations along the run and then afterwards. It's a fantastic motivator).

You can actually use this program in any way you want and that is the beauty of it. There are Sparkers that run a 5k distance on their treadmill or street. it does not have to be a set 5k. Best wishes and have fun!

So this is for ANY 5k race- anywhere, right? I live in RI and we have almost nothing BUT 5k's, any further, and you'd be out of the state. If I find out within, say. 10 weeks of one I'm interested in, I follow the plan, here, and I'd be okay for it.

Is that what this is about?

Thanks!

From what Coach Jen advised me, the only way 5to wipe your slate clean is to "unjoin" and then rejoin. Sorry about that. It's a pain I know.

Laurie....

I was on that team last year & quit because it is not as friendly as this one. Not one leader even welcomed me to the team. Only the form letter that comes. I will just do my best and wait till April or may to start. I will continue to keep encouraging our team members.

Thanks for the reply

Okay, not sure whether I should start a new thread but I'll start here.

I have sort of the opposite problem. I fell off on tracking but not running. I tracked the first day on the interactive calendar. I did run/walk training for three days a week but switched to a 10K program. I ran a 5K along the way. I'll be running my 10K at the end of this month. I just now went back to fill in the interactive calendar retroactively and it looks as if I can't do that.

What should I do now? I'd kind of like the 5K trophy....

Thanks for answers, fellow runners.

I'm kind of in the same boat, DILLIGAD1956 . I had almost completed week 4 when I fell off for a couple of weeks. What I was told is just go back and repeat your last week. No biggie. Or go back to where you feel comfortable and start from there. Still no biggie! emoticon

Hi. I got as far as week 3 day 1 complete and then fell off the program about two weeks ago. Yesterday I did a 5 K by walking 3 minutes jogging 1 minute repetitively until I completed the 5 K. I want to start back on the program and complete it as designed. What should I do to 'get it right'? Thanks in advance for your advice.

The first thing that comes to my mind is you may be running too fast. If you are huffing and puffing, slow down. Often new runners think that you train by running as fast as you can. That is not so. A slow pace is key here in order for your body to adjust to running. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes for you. Good luck and happy running!

Sorry if this was asked and answered before, but I didn't see it. I missed week 3 of the training (did other stuff while traveling). So, what do you recommend for getting back on track? I feel ready to do the week 3 sequence, but am I also supposed to start week 4?

Karen, another Sparker just posted this:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Are you referring to the Fitness tracker, ie mileage tracker? If so, then yes you can set it to track your mileage in kms - mine is set that way (I'm Canadian). Your team member should be able to set this in the 'edit fitness goals' area; there is a section for mileage tracker setup that allows you to select a distance goal and also choose km or miles.
Hope that helps.
Karen, I just received this answer from Coach jen. If I hear anything further I will let you know!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~
I don't think so. Does she have her program set to use metric? I think that only changes things for her weight tracker, not fitness.
Sorry about that!
Coach Jen
Go ahead and unjoin then rejoin. The weekend is the perfect time to do it too since SparkPeople operates their trackers Sunday through Saturday. Unjoin today and rejoin tomorrow! Best wishes!
Hi, I started this team a while ago, and haven't even been able to run yet, because of the weather, not it says I'm on week 2. Is there a way to change that, or should I leave the team, and re-join?
Hi I am sort of new to running (I've done up to week 5 on the training plan but that was2 years ago) I am in currently in week 2 of the training plan I however have a question. I live in Seattle and its beginning to rain hard due to the fall and its cold I have no problem running in the rain however I usually take my 4month old son with and I don't have nobody to watch him and I just feel bad because his stroller gets soaked sometimes.
My question is: Is there any other exercises I can do at home that are equivalent to running? I have some that you can jog in place but I read that is not the same as when your outdoors?
LOL. Running is NOT my problem. I am taking the treadmill up to 4.5. My problem is I am EXTREMELY overweight, and I smoke. I will just stay on week one for a little longer. Thank you!!!!
You can repeat the week and it could be that you are actually running TOO FAST! Yes, its true! When I first started running I did this very thing and when I slowed down, it started clicking. If you are huffing and puffing during a run, slow your pacing down. That just may do the trick!
Happy running!
So I am in week one, and I just cannot see me jogging for a minute and a half next week. Tomorrow is day three in my first week, and I am already stressing out about it. After about 35 seconds, I can hardly breathe. Should I stay in week one until I build up a bit more breath?
Oh my goodness, you are not a pain at all and I love helping new runners and help them in their running journey!
Kettlebells are great! Just make sure that you are doing it in somewhat proper form. There are great DVD's or youtube videos available to show you the technique. KB's are great for runners! Go gettem!
Hey! Me again, I read some of the links you posted about cross-training but I am just not sure if Im doing it "right" or enough. Walking felt like a great option for me! I would love swimming but I just dont have it avaiable to me. I was wondering what your thoughts were on kettlebell works out..do they count as non running day work out or is that too much?
Thanks so much for your time! I feel like such a pain!
Sunny, I have been running since June 2009 and developed my endurance with time and patience. heck, it took me a good year or so to even actually enjoy running. Now, my very favorite thing is to run HM's. My actual weekly mileage isn't even that high but I keep my long distance running consistent.
Just do as much visiting and reading on the running spark teams and learn from others. that is where I have gleaned alot of my info.
Keep doing what you are doing, learn along the way and most imprtantly...enjoy the activity!
Hi Laurie,
I just thought I'd drop by.............gosh...........I guess there are sooooooo many people who want to be runners. I just didn't realize, I guess I thought I was the only ONE!!! Selfish thinking I guess.
So I'll quit "guessing" about everything ;-) I've still been jogging on the tm, and now I jog 1 min and 20 seconds. some days more, and some less; at least 4 days a week. Today 10/20 I just took an easy day jogged 31:10, & went 1.54 miles & dropped my cd player.
Yesterday 10/19 I jogged 40 min & went 2.31 miles, walking usually 4 min.
Sooooooooo I want to be a GOOD runner, and I want to travel to places to enter their 1/2 marathons, and maybe even someday a marathon!! Wow, me..............I'd love to just give it a try..........someday.
Do you think .................yes, as long as my health holds out I'll do it. Are there any tips you can give me? Anything I should read? How long have you been running? Has it always been easy for you? Tell me what will make it easy for me???? ;-)
Oh Yeah, and I like to do Yoga on most other days. Thanks for your help!!
Namaste,
Sunny
