Sitting here trying to keep busy. Sally, I remember you asking about a new discussion board, so I added one. It is called,"Discussion Place". Once the regular posters all get there, I will post a message on this board telling how to find us on the new one.

Lizzie, I have found that men are not as tuff as women.

I have really bad news.
Yesterday evening Jet stopped walking on his leg. He seemed in pain. I thought that maybe he had pulled a muscle when he got up because he surely has not done anything that should have hurt him. This morning he was dragging that foot. I got dressed and called the vet office that did the surgery when they opened at 830. They said bring him in. I saw an area where the rod ended that was swollen and seemed full of fliud. Thought maybe the end of the rod had made him sore and that was why he would not use that leg. They were not concerned with the fliud area. They asked to do x rays and we gave them permission.
After almost 6 weeks, not only had the bone not healed, it was worse. The bone had collapsed in on itself. Both vets said that even though the biopsy said no cancer, it had to be. They said that sometimes the piece that you send in for biopsy will not have cancer yet, but all the areas around it will. Unusual, but it happens. They showed us the x rays and Jet was in such pain. I had them put him to sleep. He is not in pain anymore. I could not stand to see him hurting. I kissed him and told him that I love him. He is running with Elwin and Mayor.

It was such a shock to both of us. I thought they would tell me that the rod was making the area sore or the fliud area was bothering him. Never thought for a minute that he was not healing, getting worse, or cancer.

In a way I am glad I am doing it myself cause I know when to stop when it comes to prying off the gauze from my toes. I have started soaking my feet today and the left toe gauze came off easily. The other one is still suck on pretty hard. So I will just keep soaking u til it comes off. Because they are so raw, the Epsom Salt burns when it hit the flesh. Hugs n luv lizzi

Mary can't or why don't the rest of your MIL children step up to the plate and tell those mooching relatives that the free ride is over. If she still lets them in (I know this is cruel) but can you have her declared unfit to look after herself or have someone be declared her power of attorney so those relatives can't get her money. We had to do something like that with my hubby's mother. Her daughter and granddaughter were robbing her blind and stealing her pain killers. Finally my hubby and his brother had the courts name them as power of attorney. That sure put a quick and immediate stop to those abusing girls helping themselves to things they had no right to. Good luck with you MIL. hugs n luv lizzi

I started taking all the caulk out from around the tub. I finished yesterday, clean the area real good, and then put new caulk around it. I had to take many break. One time I was bent over and had to walk that way until I got to the sofa and laid down. Glad that is over. I had tried to do this a few times before and could never get it out. I tried teh caulk remover. Waste of money. then read that to use a hairdryer. It softens it a little and makes it easier, not easy to get the caulk out.

Sally, I wish I was at Disney with your sister and kids. Are the kids out of school?

lol. Ladies I have a new respect for y'all. Tedd watched the U-Tube clip of this procedure on Thursday coming home from school. He was doing the heaves in the back seat of the van and when I told him that he would have to help me with my dressings, he had a few not so nice words to tell me (heave) that he wasn't (heave) doing it. "(Heave) you better get Home Care in to look after you cause I'm not touching it". I thought for sure that he was going to be sick in the back of my van lol. I had the procedure done yesterday morning. The left toe was just the outside of the big toe, kind of like half of the toe. The right toe is a different story. The whole toe was done on the one and it is the one that is causing me a lot of pain. Maybe because the whole toe was done, but the left toe is hardly hurting. If you can imagine having a big heavy rock dropped on your toe and the pain and throbbing that comes from it, that is what I am going through on the right toe. But it also was the one that bothered me more. The doc put me on Tylenol #3 and even 2 at one time is not touching g the pain!!! But it is done and I am so glad so now I just have to be patient for 4-6 weeks for it to heal. Lots of hugs love to y'all lizzi

Cheri - She left a message and has called Bruce a few times today. Their shifts overlap on Saturdays, so he will see her tomorrow. Thanks for your support!

Lizzie,

I looked up the Vandenbos procedure for ingrown toenails

The video is great, but kind of gross - so you may not want to watch it. It shows his other big toe that had the procedure before, and it looks great.

nbos-procedure-for-ingrown-toenails_R>lifestyle#.UQu4S_I-H00

From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgical_treat
me
nt_of_ingrown_toe_nails
= photos are there, too.

Vandenbos procedure

The Vandenbos procedure was first described by Vandenbos KQ and Bowers WP in 1959 in the US Armed Forces Medical Journal.[3] They reported on 55 patients and had no recurrences. Subsequently, Dr. Henry Chapeskie performed this procedure on over 1,100 patients with no recurrences since 1988. Unlike other procedures used to treat ingrown toenails, the Vandenbos procedure doesn't touch the nail. In this procedure, the involved toe is first anesthetized with a digital block and a tourniquet applied. An incision is made proximally from the base of the nail about 5 mm (leaving the nail bed intact) then extended toward the side of the toe in an elliptical sweep to end up under the tip of the nail about 34 mm in from the edge. It is important that all the skin at the edge of the nail be removed. The excision must be adequate often leaving a soft tissue deficiency measuring 1.5 3 cm. A portion of the lateral aspect of the distal phalanx is occasionally exposed without fear of infection. Antibiotics are not necessary as the wound is left open to close by secondary intention. Postoperative management involves soaking of the toe in warm water 3 times/day for 1520 minutes. The wound is healed by 46 weeks. No cases of Osteomyelitis have been reported. When healed, the nail fold skin remains low and tight at the side of the nail.

Good luck, Lizzie!

Hugs,

Sally

Hi,

Got a message from that woman early this morning, She apologized for upsetting Bruce and said that she will see him at work on Saturday. She is still very sad, but knows that taking her life is not the answer.

Poor Bruce was so upset, not knowing if he made the right decision last night. Of course he didn't get enough sleep.

At least she got past the crisis.

Hugs,

Sally

Lizzie, I am going to look up the procedure. I had the sides of both nails on my big toes removed, but they grew back. One sometimes causes me some pain.
Sally, How scary.
Cheri, They have not implanted the pump into her yet. I can not take morphine. they gave it to me when I had my gallbladded taken out. It was before they started doing the surgery they do now. I have a scar about 12 inches long. I hallucinate when I take it. they had to change me to demerol. It also gave me the worse headache I have ever had. I thought my head was going to explode. When Alans dad was dying of cancer, he took morphine and they had to change him to something else becasue it slowed his respiration to nothing. Alans mom probably weighs about 110 and she already has so much trouble with her parkinsons.
Got bad news. The grandchild that had Alans mom wait on him and the kids, asked for money, drove her car and he doesn't even have a licence, will be moving back in July.

How kind of Bruce Sally to talk to that girl.
Lizzie they are doing the cortisone shots on the 6th of February.I don't know when Al will be back yet.
Mary I have perhaps a bit more extensive medical background.Addiction is not based on the intensity of the pain but rather how the patient assimilates the drug, and the concerns I have are more based on the fact she is elderly .Here is some information on the Elderly and morphine. Now her doctors will likely watch for this but elderly patients do not always attribute the problems they are having to the drugs they are taking so it is wise for you to know what it can cause.Morphine is a powerful drug used to treat pain from cancer, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions generating pain in the elderly. According to a consensus statement by an international expert panel on opioids and severe pain in the elderly, with Dr. Joseph Pergolizzi of Johns Hopkins University as lead author, morphine is primarily metabolized in the liver and its metabolites are excreted by the kidneys. Thus, elderly patients with liver or kidney disease need lower dosages or longer dosing intervals
Pergolizzi notes that elderly patients in general often have constipation prior to the use of opioids, and morphine makes the problem worse--morphine is extremely constipating compared with other opioids. Some elderly patients switch to a less-constipating drug because of the severity of their morphine-induced constipation. Some older patients have left clinical studies because they couldn't tolerate the constipation that morphine caused.

Dr. Ramsin Benyamin of the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign says constipation can occur with just one dose of morphine. He also says constipation is not a side effect that diminishes over time; consequently, this problem should be managed over the entire course of treatment with morphine among the elderly.
Contrary to the case with younger individuals, respiratory depression--a decreased breathing rate that may be inadequate for the body's needs--is an issue with morphine use among older people, especially in older individuals with serious pulmonary conditions, such as chronic bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Pergolizzi notes this risk is worsened if elderly individuals also consume alcohol or take drugs that are central nervous system depressants, such as barbiturates or benzodiazepines.
Immunosuppression refers to the decreased ability of the immune system to fight off bacterial and viral invaders because of one or more factors. Sometimes immunusuppression is planned, as with immunosuppressants given to organ donors so their body won't reject the organ.

In general, however, immunosuppression is not desirable, and is a particular problem with the elderly. Pergolizzi notes that morphine is the most immunosuppessive opioid drug. In contrast, buprenorphine, oxycodone and hydromorphone--all opioids--are significantly less immunosuppressive than morphine.
I know that was a little complicated but it covered all the points I was concerned about.Sometimes I am guilty of oversimplifying when I say something but I figure you will ask if you want the details but if you get misguided by getting the regular adult version I figure I had better explain the elderly version and it's reasoning.love and hugs,Cheri

Hi all,

Bruce's only night off from work is Thursday. He ended up having a co-worker from his night job call him and say that she was going to kill herself. We really struggled on whether to call the police for her or not. We talked to the Suicide Hotline for advice, We don't know where she lived in Philadelphia. Just as we were going to call the main police station to at least give them her cell phone number, she called back.

She asked Bruce not to call the police, because they would put her on an involuntary hold in the psychiatric unit. She seems drunk or stoned, so hopefully she will feel better tomorrow. She just found out today that a friend that she had been staying with sold her stuff that she still had at the friend's house, bought drugs with the money and died from an overdose. She is wild with grief and guilt.

Bruce was very sweet and kept talking to her and trying to get her to commit to talking to him over the weekend.

Too much drama for us, but we care about people that we meet. If you have a minute, please say a prayer for her.

Hey Lizzie!

My sister has been divorced forever and her ex is an asshole. She and the kids live in the same house with my parents, Bruce and I. We are all really close. I was Lisa's labor coach and have been with the children every step of the way. Rachel is 20 now, she was born on my birthday. She is beautiful and brilliant. She has Asperger's so she isn't very independent, Joe is 16 and so smart with technology and photography. He is a gorgeous young man. He has a lot of learning disabilities, so we all help him with his cyber school program.

I was terrified of ingrown toenails, and am prone to them. I had all 10 toes "fixed" a long time ago. They cut the nails on each side of each toe to make the nails smaller. I never had a problem since they healed. Other problems, yes, but not ingrown toenails!!

I will look up your procedure to see what they are going to do for you,

Great to hear from you,

Sally

Good evening Ladies.

Mary that Chinese restaurant sounds so good. I wish we had one like that here. I love Chinese food. I also love Japanese food especially tempura and Korean Kim Chi. Since my surgery I have been doing a lot of stir fry using mainly chicken as my protein

Tomorrow I am having another minor surgery called the Vandebos Procedure. This is the new procedure for handling ingrown toenails. In the past i have had the toe nail removed, but it is not the answer to my problem so my doctor has recommended this. The video is a bit on the gross side, but at least I know what I will have to deal with when I have to soak my feet 3 times a day for a couple of weeks until the skin starts to grow back and fill in the cavity created.

Mary what dosage of morphine is your MIL on for her back. I think if her pain is that I tense that they are doing the morphine treatment, it will be a long time before she gets addicted, plus her doctor will be monitoring her pain and dosage. My Mom has complained of back pain for years and years and since she has been in the long term care facility, they have found that she has degenerative disc disease and are treating her pain with a low dosage morphine.

Sally how long has your sister and the children gone for? Is her hubby not goi g with them are is he staying behind to work and look after their pets? With Bruce's arrangements for living conditions in Philly, can you go and stay with him for a few days at a time, or is the place too small? It would be nice if you could spend a week or so with him a couple of times a month

Mad and Sally I am going to start stalking you two on Pinterest. I have been stalking Cheri for a while now lol. I am also going to see if Tracy and Susan are on there and stalk them as well. I tell you but our friend Cheri is and has a gold Mine of stuff on her Pinterest account.

Cheri when do you get your cortisone treatment? It sure sound intense. When does Al come home? Hugs luv lizzi

Well, I think that they should declare the three of us as the Empresses of the world - or at least US and Canada. Between the three of us, we know everything and could decide everything for the best outcomes for all! Since there are 3 of us, the voting would always be fair.

Mary, that Chinese buffet sounds like heaven. Being new, it is probably still shiny clean, too!

Bruce made an agreement with his friends that he could rent from them for $400 a month. It is going to be tight, but it seems fair. Going rate for nice neighborhoods is about $500 or more. We are going to go see the inside of the house on Sunday early afternoon before the Superbowl.

Cheri, wow - your shots are complicated. I am glad you explained the shot story with your doctor, and what they have to do for you for real. Can you tell if they are helping?

Well, I slept a few hours in the morning. Then I just had a deep sleep from about 6:30pm until 1:30am. I feel good for now. All mixed up, though! LOL Poor Bruce just got home to go to bed,

If you are out there, Lizzie, we miss you. Give us an update.

Tracy, Tracy - how are you?

Hugs to all,

Sally

LOL Sally I keep telling the doctor if I was a horse he would have shot me a long time ago and he says oh no I am too valuable a horse I am too funny I keep him laughing ! He doesn't do the cortisone shots because I have to go to a special place they give me an anaestic and put my xrays on a projection screeen and use laser pointers to guide where the cortisone is to be shot into my hips ,it is a more complicated procedure than having a shot in your doctor's office. then they put me on a wooden table that they strap me to and invert they make sure the cortisone is flowing where they want it to.They bandage the spots where it was injected and tell me to take it easy for 24 hours , so it doesn't leak out. Then once they are sure I won't be sick my friend Gladys can take me home.
Mary yes she can get addicted to morphine too.It can also cause some rather bad side effects. My personal preference would be to keep her on vicodin.

The chinese place just opened around Thanksgiving. We have now gone there 3 times. One time was Alans mom took us out to eat for his birthday. It is a huge buffet. One reason I like this one better than the others, it has a hibachi area also. You take a bowl and put in it what you want him to cook for you. I put a lot of cabbage, some broccoli, some onion, a lot of mushrooms, and shrimp. I also get a small salad. At least I get my veggies in that day. They have just about anything you can think of on the buffet part. It has 6 of those islands of food besides the hibachi area. It was nice to get out of the house together. We have not been able to go anywhere together since Jet broke his leg because he is suppose to be under direct supervision.
Jet tried to run when I took him out a few minutes ago. I yelled at him and he immediately stoppped.
I have been cleaning the house. It seems that it has been a mess since Christmas. As soon as I get one part clean, another part is a mess. All the clothes are washed, dishes clean, and all the trash taken out. I am leaving vacuming and sweeping for Alan.
Alan went to Lufkin to see Sam. They did the spinal tap today. He asked them what the test was going to tell them. Suprise!!!! It is to tell the doctor if his neuropothy is any worse. What????????? We all were under the impression that we were trying to find out something about his alzheimers.
Of course we care about his neuropathy, but that is the least of his problems.
Cheri, they did some procedure on Alans mom. She stayed overnight at thehospital. They put morphine in her back and wanted to see if she had any reaction. She didn't. they are going to see if that helps her back pain. If it helps, they are going to implant a morphine pump into her. Hope she locks up any morphine or her grandkids will be high on that. I guess she will have some kind of container to hook up to the pump. I don't really understand why it is better to be taking morphine than vicodin. They will only give her 60 pills for 2 months. If she is hurting that bad, that is only 1 pill a day. I don't think that is going to do away with the pain. I know they don't want her to get addicted, but can't she get addicted to morphine? Oh, well, I hope it helps her.

Hi,

Mary, yummm - I love Chinese food, too. Did you have a good lunch with your husband?

So glad Jet is perky!

Cheri, what do you mean that your doctor won't "shot" you because you are funny? Does he have someone else give you the cortisone shots with the laser?

What did you eat at the Italian restaurant? One of my favorites is Chicken Parmesan. I have not had it in a long, long time. Now I have a craving!

I am trying to take care of my parents and the dogs while my sister and the kids are in Florida. My parents are doing a great job helping to take care of the dogs, too.

Hugs to all,

Sally

Jet seems to be fine. He tried to run yesterday. He found the end of the 4 foot leash real quick. Alan had him outside doing his thing and he saw me in the front yard. I think he made one step before the leash stopped him. He is so funny. He can not pee and poop in the same trip. He will do one and be in the house a minute and then go and do the other. He is only going out 2x times at night now.

It has been so hot or feeling that way. We have been at 75 for 2 days and only 70 at night. The front is coming in this evening. We may have severe weather. Tomorrow will be 60.

Sally are you going to move with Bruce or stay where you are?

Cheri, hope your doctors appt was a good one.

I promised to take Alan out to eat today. I have a coupon for a chinese place. 2 adult lunches for $11.

Mary, Buddy and my cat Luna wake us up a lot at night. They can sleep all day, no problems! I am on way my to a nap right now at 2:30pm. I am sorry that Sam is getting worse, too. I understand how hard it is. The last 2 years of my Grandmother's life, she was making passes at my Dad. He was mortified. Sometimes she though that he was his father, and other times she just liked the looks of him,

Cheri, we had Vietnamese food last night after looking at a few places for rent in Philly. I just love their food - as long as I stay away from the hot spices. LOL. It is delicious and very reasonable. We had 2 appetizers, and 2 dinners for $21. Yummmm.

I got a cute new scale from Chinal. I have to be careful that I don't fall off, I never saw one so small. It works great, and was just $12 with free shipping on ebay, I didn't even think how big it would be from the posting,

I had a filling fall out. Ugggh. It hurts a bit. Not sure if I will make an appt before my cleaning in Feb or not. Guess it depends on how much it hurts.

My sister and the kids just got to Florida for a 2 week trip to Disneyworld. That is their happy place. They took the train. I would hate that without having a bedroom on the train, but that is so expensive now. They just sit in their seats all day and night, and watch videos and play computer games. They left yesterday around 4pm and will get to the Orlando area around 4pm this afternoon.

Chat with you all again, soon,

Hugs and Love,

Sally

Sally, It seems that you and I have so much trouble with our sleepy and getting our days and nights mixed up. I am having a lot of trouble right now because Jet waking me up to go outside.
Jet is no longeron any pain meds. He seem to be doing fine. He goes back to the vet Feb 12th.

We liked Sams doctor. Unfortunately he and the neurologist think all his sleeping andnot eating is a progression of the alzheimers. The neurologist is doing a test on him the 30th. We will se what that says.

My back is hurting today.

Cheri, Glad that you enjoyed your birthday.

Sally, Sorry that Bruce has to move. Maybe he can appeal the decision in a few months.

LOL, you are funny. Hope you had a good day, Cheri.

I was messed up in a different way today with my sleep. I went to bed early last night because I couldn't keep my eyes open. Then I woke up at 3am because my kitty Luna was "cleaning" every piece of paper that she could find. I tried to protect my husband so that he could sleep by taking Luna into the den. Then Buddy woke Bruce up anyway and wanted Bruce to take him out and then find me. Then I couldn't go back to sleep and I was afraid of waking Bruce up, so I went back to the den to watch tv - but Bruce and Buddy came to find me again anyway.

Then I got really tired at 3pm.and slept until 6:30 but was a zombie until 9.

I am such a goof!

Hugs,

Sally

OMGosh Sally you had me in stitches. I could just see you up to your knees in snow but having to pee!!! Your temperature is so much warmer than what we have. It is supposed to be warming up though. We don't seem to be having as many chinooks this year like we normally do.

Mary I am so glad you have found a doctor to take over Sam's care. I hate it when people with memory problems are in care facilities and are allowed to roam free. To me they should all be given a security bracelet so it they go out doors an alarm is sounded. Just before Christmas we had a 54 year old Mom go out for her normal evening stroll and gas never been seen or heard from since. The sad thing is Tedd and I k ow her cause she worked at his Junior High.
We pray that she will be found safe and sound.

Tracy it sure was nice to see you again. Hope all is well with you. Tanya and your fur babies. Hugs n luv lizzi

Cheri,

Fresh, clean snow is so pretty. When we lived in Wisconsin we saw a lot of it.

Dirty, wet snow or icy dangerous roads are not fun.

When we first went to Milwaukee to buy a house, the snow drifts were up to 12 feet tall. I had just had bone reconstruction surgery on my feet, and I was in a plaster cast, I was crawling over snow drifts to get into houses to see them, and dripping over everyone's floors as the snow in my cast melted! It was unreal and unforgettable.

When Bruce and I took our long car trip to move east from California, it was in February. We went to lots of National Parks in the US and Canada. We were right when we thought it may be our only chance to have over a month to just travel like that.

We were in one park in Canada where we were driving through roads with snow covered mountains, The sign said to be quiet because of avalanche. I didn't think that it was that serious, but later I saw a tv show about avalanches and was frightened and amazed!

Another thing that I remember is that the plumbing was turned off at all the restrooms in the parks, so I had to pee in the snow. Brrrrrr!

Hugs,

Sally

Well it's a new day, and I am happy with the sunshine. It is cold, though. 23F which is -5C. We just have a little leftover snow from last week still on the ground. There are supposed to be snow showers tomorrow.

Cheri,

Can you walk in the pool, or is it too hard to get there in the winter? I know that you are famous as a swimmer - but walking and doing movement in the water is easier and therapeutic and feels good. I wish that I could go with you.

I used to do the silver sneakers class with my parents in the pool at the Y. Even though I was too young, they let me in the class as long as it was not full because I was at the same speed as the seniors!

I can't believe that I am only 5 years away from 60. It kind of hit me today.

Are they having you do chair exercises? You can get a pretty good work out sitting down, too.

Hugs,

Sally

Hi,

Mary - that is great news about Sam's appointment with the new doctor. It is wonderful that you will get to go with him.

Very stressful day, Bruce got notice that his waiver was denied, so he has to move to Philadelphia for March 1, We really don't want him to be sleeping away, and have the expense of a rental. UGGGHH

He had a phone meeting with the President of the Travel Company that he is the real estate broker for. Bruce's boss quit effective January 11. We have been scared that they would get rid of Bruce, but it looks like it is ok for now,.

Too much,

Nice to come here and be with you guys.

Did you have a nice time with Kayleigh, Cheri?

My sister and the kids are going to Florida for 2 weeks. They are taking the Amtrak train on Sunday. They are just totally in their happy place at Disney World!

Hugs,

Sally

Got a call first thing this morning, Dr Splenser accepted Sam and he has an appointment Thursday 2pm. I am going with them so I can meet the doctor.

Advil is a good thing. Most of the soreness is gone from the waist up, but my butt and legs are killing me.
