Thanks for all the support everyone! And good luck and/or congratulations to all who are also doing 5k. I fell apart shortly after I posted that. I was walking along my road to my healthy self and saw a cute path and started following that and got lost. But I have found my way back, it just took longer than what I wanted. To update everyone, I got signed up for my 5k. It is in 19 days. I am super excited! I have been walking every Saturday for the past 3 weeks and this past weekend, I walked Saturday, Sunday and this morning. Average distance is at least 2 miles. I have lost 12 pounds total so far and feeling pretty good. So, I think I am in the right direction for my health.

I would give yourself 5-6 weeks. The bootcamp is good for strength, the cycling for cardio, but you will need to be ready for the impact of the jog/walk. So substitute cycling with the run/walk 3 times a week. This will also be good for your body allowing for more muscle confusion.

Right now I am doing boot camp styled workouts in the morning and cycling for 30 minutes in the evenings 6 times weekly. This is the first 5k I''m doing so I plan to jog/walk, no time goals in place, just finishing.

It depends on what you are doing now... if you are walking, running, planning on a PR, just want to finish.... whether a month is enough.

signed up for a "Color me Rad" 5k in April. I haven't started training in earnest as yet because it is so cold outside. I am planning to start a month before the event. Anyone think that's too late?

I just want to do the 5k walk race just to say I can. I will do a virtual 5k. My niece has already set me up a calendar and a race "date" and she is my date! She is going to walk the whole distance with me (on a treadmill). But what she has in store for me next is scary! She has already reviewed the 5k my way run program and has a start day for it! And she is looking into real 5k's for us to do together locally. I think I am so blessed to have her!

Use the training plan here and make it fit your life. The training is good and useful. I found that I could improve my speed and distance just by walking regularly. It is hard at first but gets easier with time.

You can do this. It will really help you feel stronger and healthier.

ASILENNA - Start with this program. Also take a look at the "Walking Tips" thread under the General Team Discussion Forum. That will give you a lot of information.

You need good shoes that fit well and are made for your gait (how your foot hits the ground).

My advice would be to walk your first 5K, even if it's a virtual race. Once you are comfortable with walking distance, then go to the Rookie Runner or Walk/Jog training plan www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/t
raining-p
lans.asp

Also add strength/resistance training to your exercise routine. A strong upper body and core will allow you to go the distance much easier.

If you have any questions be sure to post them and they will get answered.

I know there is a Couch25K program easily found on the internet - not sure if it is for walking, or just running. In any event, I am cheering you on! I can tell you, from recent experience, that if you just get outside and walk regularly, you will be AMAZED at how quickly you improve your distance, enjoyment, health, it's all good!

Thanks! I am actually doing the 5K walk. I don't think I could survive running one yet. That is a goal further down the road.

I am preparing to train for my very first ever 5k. There is a Biggest Loser 5k in a town near me in April and I am super excited and motivated. I am just over 300 pounds right now. I don’t have any grand illusions that I will be 140 pounds and in the best of health. But I do have grand illusions of losing as much weight as realistically as I can and be in better health than I am currently. I will be signing up for the 5k walk. (I’ve never been a runner) my goal is to complete it in 2 hours. I currently walk 30 minutes. I want to shave 10 minutes off of that. My question (that I am hoping you guys can help) is what do I need to do to get started? I have clearance from my doctor to exercise, but other than walking and eating right, what else would be most beneficial for me during this training?
