Speaking of ice cream... I follow a paleo diet and limit my dairy as well as my grains. And I found that I do like some of the coconut milk ice creams that are out there. Some of them are icy and icky... but I've found a few that I really like. Particularly SO Delicious Coconut Ice Cream Flavor: Chocolate Peanut Butter (chocolate ice cream with ribbons of peanut butter throughout). Safeway and Wegmans both carry it in my area.

I find it to be a lot richer than regular ice cream, so even though the container is small... about 5-10 spoonfuls satisfies my ice cream AND chocolate cravings (depending on the time of the month LOL). :-)

Thanks Toni.
I recognised "GBombs" when I read it, but couldn't remember what it was!
I still need to work on the berries, beans, and seeds & nuts.

I also LOVE ice cream! I also LOVE a type of cheesecake the Russians make for Easter. After some experimentation, I found a way to get both without a lot of guilt:

lite ricotta cheese
ground almonds
stevia
whatever type of milk you use

mix (it should be quite thick) and freeze

A spoonful of that makes the ice cream craving vanish!

I also ate a lot of frozen meals for the convenience. When I decided to cut out processed foods, I simply made my own meals and froze them. If you do big batch cooking, this takes almost no time at all.

To Genesis2012. The name of the book is "Eat To Live". And the G-Bombs stands for the healthiest food to eat.

G- is for Greens

B- is for Berries

O- is for Onions

M- is for Mushrooms

B- is for Beans

S- is for Seeds and Nuts

I know how you feel. I love, love ICE CREAM!
Good luck!

After I wrote to Essie I read the other responses to my question. Thank you Tinytoni, Anewtatiana and Christina! I am seeing a positive reason to try to eat more whole foods and stay away from all the sugars and the processed foods. I never heard of G-Bombs. What is the name of the book? I'm thinking that like Anewtatiana I will never completely give up meat - I don't eat much red meat at all but at least once or twice a year I like a good steak. I have decided to stay away from fish and shellfish because I've read some evidence that fish is not the healthy food it used to be before our water became poisoned with mercury. I would like to get unhooked from the processed foods. I work and find that I eat a lot of Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice for lunch because of the convenience. I usually eat a piece of light string cheese and a fruit for breakfast. I think my nemesis still is the ice cream and the pretzels. I love that old demon ice cream emoticon . I did cut way back on it a year ago and lost about 15 lbs. (doing Spark People - I've been around for years.) Then I started working again and have found myself eating the wrong way again. I'll blame work emoticon but we all know it's really me that is the problem. I forgot how to just "say no!" Well, everyone, I'm going to give this a real shot and see what happens. I know it won't "cure" the arthritis completely but if it helps reduce the inflammation, that's good enough for me. I just don't want to take any Rx drugs for it because they all have such horrible side effects and risks. Thanks again for your replies and if someone could send me the name of the G-Bombs book, I'd really appreciate it. emoticon

You are so right about the bread and wheat CMFARRELL. And that is because if you read the ingredients on the wrapper, it must say "100% whole wheat". Multi grain and wheat flour are just white flour with coloring. I get my 100% whole wheat bread from Whole Foods. All of the other grocery stores only sell commercial bread with too many ingredients and garbage. I would like to go wheat free, but I don't think I can. I have given up so many things and I don't want to feel deprived.

Thanks for your reply Essie. I think I might need a hip replacement too but I'm going to try to put it off as long as I can. I had an accident two years ago and landed flat on my back with my arm under me - which made my hip turn counterclockwise a half turn. X-rays my Chiropractor took show it clearly and I now have severe to moderate arthritis in that hip caused by that traumatic injury. I have been taking fish oil for years but tomorrow, in fact, I'm switching over to flax seed oil capsules. My reason for making the switch is that my sister-in-law read that they are starting to see a link to fish oil and certain cancers. Doesn't this make you crazy?? emoticon I remember my mom giving my cod liver oil as a kid - now you don't dare take anything like that! I am switching to the flax because I think the danger with fish oil is the mercury levels, and even though I buy fish oil that is supposed to be pure, I'm just not all that trusting any more. I also had cancer - an HRT breast tumor. The tumor was removed in Jan. 2011 and there was nothing in the lymphs and it was only 1 millimeter. I have to take a pill for 5 yrs. to reduce the odds of this recurring by 93%. That's great but, unfortunately, the side effects include thinning of the bones and joint pain! I'm trying to keep that at bay by taking calcium with Vit. D - I get a lot of natural Vit. D too because I live in Arizona and am always exposed to sunshine. I blame the breast tumor on a year of taking HRT at the urging of my former GYN doc. My mom took hormone shots back in the day and she also developed one of these HRT breats tumors. I am talking too much - emoticon but I think we are being pumped full of drugs that help fix one problem but cause 10 more that are worse than the original problem. emoticon

Anyway, I went to Sprouts this afternoon and bought organic potatoes, spring mix, free range chicken and natural turkey, as well as some cranberry trail mix. I will bake an organic potato and have it with my chicken breast for dinner. DH is okay with that kind of dinner so I'm lucky that way. I don't eat much bread and usually buy whole grain breads and whole wheat pasta (but only eat pasta on an average of once a month.) I do eat fruit but I think the sugar in fruit is not as harmful to our systems as all the refined sugars. emoticon

By the way: my BIGGEST problem is going to be giving up ice cream - which is my most favorite treat emoticon I do buy the "no sugar added" ice cream but even those have some type of sweetener in them. I haven't been able to find anything sweetened with Stevia - most use Splenda and I'm not too sure about that. I may write another thread and ask if anyone knows of an ice cream that uses Stevia for sweetening.

Good luck with your diet/health goals and, again, thank you for your response to my question. You have encouraged me!

I need to keep up my water intake, for certain.

I also notice a difference between low and high amounts of bread/wheat.

Yes, I do the G-Bombs also. I really do feel the difference when I eat clean and follow his advice. I can feel the difference when I eat sweets or processed food. I very rarely eat processed food. And I have not eaten fast food (Except pizza) in 20 years. But after I saw the movie "Supersize Me", I have trouble even eating pizza. A good movie to watch about nutrition is "Forks Over Knives". You can watch it for free on U-Tube.

I follow two general nutrition theories: Dr. Fuhrman's "gombs" (greens, onions, mushrooms, berries/beans, seeds), and Dr. Andrew Weil's anti-inflammatory pyramid.

I've found a number of benefits: weight loss (therefore less stress on my arthritic knees), very noticeable reduction of inflammatory episodes, lower blood pressure, better cholesterol levels, and increased energy. As a side benefit, exercise is not as difficult, so I'm more willing to do it.

I have not given up entirely on everything else. I don't think I'll ever give up red meat 100%, nor will I live the rest of my life without sweets. But I find that I crave them less and less as time goes on. The only thing I'll never go back to is processed foods. I make everything from scratch, and try to be as careful as possible when I occasionally eat out.

One benefit that neither of the doctors mention: it's cheaper to eat less meat! :)

Yes, I have noticed that when I don't eat sugar, white flour, or meat, I have less pain. The reason I noticed it was because I have done it several times and got the same result every time. But sometimes I just crave candy or cookies and have to start over again. I have also noticed that I sleep better too when I eat clean. Right now I am following the Dr. Joel Fuhrman "Eat To Live" plan, and feeling very good. I lost 22 pounds altogether over a 6 month period.

I had my hip replaced in April due to the progression of arthritis. Since then, I have done a lot of research to preserve my other joints from succombing to the same deterioration.

I found that taking a fish oil pill (I take Kriill oil) helps. Also, I read that the latest research on eating cruciferous vegetables showed that a compound in these vegetables slows the progression of osteoarthritis. Also, as far as possilbe, I do not eat sugar or starch, which eliminates bread, pasta, potatoes and other starches. I find that I have more energy on this diet because I consume lean protein and lots of vegetables. I am careful about fruits, although I do eat them, because I also had cancer surgery two years ago. The research on cancer shows that cancer cells feed on glucose, found in sugar, starches and 50% of the protein we consume.

This is just one example--"me"--but I do feel a lot better, and have less pain, after changing my diet. Best wishes to you.

I've had many people tell me - and I've read tons of literature - that eliminating sugar and processed foods from your diet can greatly reduce the inflammation of arthritis. Has any gone to a whole foods diet? Did it help? Thanks for any input emoticon
