I have never heard of Rooster Comb Shot. I have had Cortoone shots before and they are painful for a couple of days. Then they settle down and are good for about 3 to 6 months.

I WILL SUCCEED BECAUSE I KNOW I CAN DO IT AND I AM MOTIVATED.

I use hiking sticks. Wooden sticks in my case 55 inches long. Some like a Bishops staff are taller then the person. If you like to lean on your staff when not walking the staff should be height where you can put your hands on top of each other and rest your chin on top of them. You can get metal hiking staffs and metal sticks that are made for walking.

Try walking with a staff. It will take the weight off the knee. Use it on the opposite side from the bad knee. the good news is that you burn more calories with a staff

Wow! I just came back from a walk and am trying to stick with the 28 DayBootcamp Challenge. I am only on Day 3 of my exercises and my knee's are screaming at me. I find that when I wake up in the morning my knees are not too bad but as soon as I go for a walk (1.5 mi) and put pressure on the knee (such as kneeling) the pain is incredible
You sound as though you have been extreamly successful at managing knee pain and wondered if you have any suggestions.

I cant kneel down now on my knees it hurts to bad.

I try heat sometimes also but cold seems to work better for mine. I have even done one then the other for 10 minutes at a time. I have Valtaren gel but it don't do anything for my knee but it sure helps my elbows in the winter or when it comes a cold rain. I have to watch taking narcotic pain meds and over the counter for I have stomach problems(acid reflux) that is makes worse if i take it to often. Most of the time I just try to block the pain from my brain (ignore) but sometimes its just to bad to do that. I have O.A and my mom has R.A I have been tested for R.A to make sure that is not what I have and its O.A but let me tell you O.A is bad enough for me. My mom takes a shot each week for her R.A. I wish there was something better for O.A.

Its hard some days just to do what I have to let on exercise. They tell me that exercise will help work out the pain but you know that is a lot easier said then done. I do try to get in some everyday but some days the pain it causes it just to much.

For those of you that have had total Knee replacement is recovery really that bad?

It sounds like you have tried most of the things to do before knee replacement surgery. Any doctor that would ask you to wait and be in intense pain for 17 years is a quack and needs replacing.
I don't use ice very often I use a rice bag that can be heated in the microwave for a minute. The heat is just right for soothing and lasts awhile. Also range of motion exercises are gentle and help lubricate the joint which can ease the pain. I imagine its very hard to exercise even sitting down if the cartilege is gone that cushions your joint while you do it. As well as losing weight doing some sitting exercises to build your quad and calf muscles will help take some strain from the knees but if you are in pain they may be hard to do. I have never tried acupunture or yoga but I hear they help a lot. Sometimes I have to take a narcotic for pain and sleeping and an anti inflammatory anti cramp medication as well to turn down the pain to where I can mange thru it or sleep. I hope something helps you soon. Don't give up! emoticon

It sounds like it is definitely time for a knee replacement. You need to find another doctor. I had to do that. My doctor told me the only thing that could be done was a knee replacement, and I didn't want to do that. I found another doctor, and he said I couldn't wait until I was over 60 I had to have both my knees done. I am very happy with my knee replacements. I can walk up and down stairs and all over with no problem. I just can't kneel down.

Both knees hurt but its my left that is the worse. I have had it scoped two times first time was Aug 2011 then again this past april. The Dr told me that there was not much he could do this time when he got in there and that is was much worse than he thought it was going to be. He said that behind my knee cap was wore down until it was gone pretty much. The to the inside of my knee was also wore out pretty much. He said we need to put the total replacement off until I am about 60 well that is a long time to live in pain.
I have been getting steriod shots in that knee from my arthritis Dr the first one help a lot but after that they have not helped much at all. There is another shot she wants to try but the Dr that done the scope says that it wont help because my knee is past that stage where it will help.
The left knee is giving out on me while I am walking. I have about fell 4 times today because of that. I will be walking and its like someone walked up behind me and kicked my knee out from under me.

I am working on weight loss hard for more than this reason. I do exercise but that only seems to make it worse. The last two days I have not been able to do any exercise because it has been hurting to much. I tried last night but only done 10 minutes and had to stop and put ice on it......oh I have a brace but it only helps if I put it on "just right". I don't mean I don't know how to put the brace on I mean I have to put it on wrong just right so it puts the pressure in just the right place or it wont help any. The brace was one of the first things they tried.

I have a cane but they told me I only need to use it on BAD days for now. It makes me feel older then I am so even with the pain I dont like to use it.

TERESA - - I agree; find a different doctor. I know they don't like doing TKR on someone so young, but when it keeps you awake a night from the pain, then it's definitely time to have something done. Have they scoped your knee(s) at all? Sometimes that is the first step before replacement. I've had bilateral total knee replacements and haven't regretted it at all. Dr said I have more bend in my knees than most people have who have never had a knee replacement. Before my knee replacements I had tried everything including shots, vitamins etc etc. Nothing worked. Keep trying!!

I agree, knee pain is horrible. Prayers to all of us with arthritis. consider seeking others options, another doctor & physical therapy, chiropractor ( helped my degenerated & herniated discs).
BTW: My mom's arthritis caused replacement of hips, knees & shoulders. One sister has had a hip replaced. All of us have arthritis in spine, knees, hips shoulders.
I've chosen to stay active without over-doing (it can wear the bone down)
I also suffer from fibromyalgia.

I have a bad knee the Dr told me to lose weight, find a therapist to teach me the proper use of a cane or staff, and to get plenty of exercise, walk when I can and chair exercises when I can't. I chose a staff. partly because it takes up to 60% of your weight off your knee then you are walking and up to 80% when you are standing still. Remember, the surface you are walking on makes a big difference. The harder the surface the worse. Concrete is the hardest. packed dirt is the best. Sidewalks are concrete, the high school tack is packed dirt.

Knees are tricky. Mine have been bad for years due to injuries, surgeries and OA. I am working with a personal trainer and walking more. It has been a real blessing for me. The left one still needs to be replaced, but I will get a lot more mileage out of it before I need to do that now! Accupuncture has also helped.

I'm 65 with OA in both knees (for the past 20 years). I tried everything else and was looking at double knee replacement 8 years ago. As a last resort before surgery, I tried acupuncture and LASER therapy (it doesn't cut - it warms), and then added more walking, yoga, and tai chi. Like one of the other commenters, MLMEYER98, the combination has worked for me. I still have some pain, on some days, but most days are truly hunky dory!

I hope you find what works for you - knee pain is no joke!

I'm sorry to hear about your knee. I have OA in my knee (I'm 47) as well and what has really helped me a lot is wearing a knee brace. I got a prescription from my doctor and was properly fitted for my brace.

Maybe you could speak with your doctor about getting a brace??

Sorry to hear about your knee. I personally didn't like what my DR said & prescribed. So I increase my walking, added yoga, ate healthier & increased my BioMega supplements.
I can say, I am (basically) pain free, less weight & more mobile. Oh & off all pain meds.
Thank you SparkPeople & teams

Hello everyone. I have to fuss some about my knee this morning. Its bee hurting bad the past 3 days even when i try to sleep. i have done everything I know to try but it still hurts. I was told that I was not old enough for knee replacement and I am 43. I dont think age should have anything to do with it. I am going to try to find a different Dr.
