I just got back from my foot doctor and Walmart visit. My foot is doing better since wearing my new shoes and inserts so he doesn't need to see me again for another 2 months. The arthritis in my neck is hurting so bad today I can hardly stand it, it's making me feel nauseated. This morning I looked at ratings and read reviews of several rubs and ended up ordering 2 things. The first one is called Penetrex - Pain Relief Therapy, it should arrive Thursday. The second one will take longer because it is shipped from somewhere in Europe, not sold in the US., it's called Ibuleve Maximum Strength Gel and has ibuprofen in it. Everyone who reviewed it gave it great ratings so I decided it was worth a try. At Walmart I bought Equate Arthricream Rub, I think it's Walmart brand Aspercream but it was the only thing they had that was advertised as odorless. I rubbed some in the back of my neck about 15 minutes ago and am now waiting to see if it will work. Hopefully I won't lose my hair or something, part of the area I had to rub it in was covered with the hair at the back of my neck. I also bought some Arthritis Strength Tylenol to alternate with ibuprofen as was recommended in an earlier post. I guess shopping for pain reliever when you're in pain is similar to shopping for groceries when you're hungry, you end up buying one of everything in the store if you're not careful!

I just got a coupon in the mail for Zero Degrees Ben Gay. Might give it a try. Going to Wal-Mart tomorrow.

I'm going to Walmart tomorrow after my doctor visit. I'm going to see what odorless products are available there. I think I'm going to try Icy Hot again too. I used it years ago and then stopped for some reason but seem to remember it working pretty well.

Somewhere in the back of my weary brain I seem to recall seeing odorless Ben Gay. There are also some other heat inducing salves that don't have an odor. My MIL gave me one years ago when I had what turned out to be Fliciatis (sic). I also used it on my arthritic hands, and it did help - but it is pretty warm - wish I could remember the name. Oh well, I'll think of it at 3:00AM when I should be sleeping.

When I went to the foot doctor he told me I have something called Morton's Neuroma. It's a thickening or enlargement of the nerve that runs along the base of your toes where they connect to your foot. The handout he gave me says:
The symptoms begin gradually, at first occurring only occasionally. Over time the symptoms progressively worsen and may persist for several days or weeks. The symptoms become more intense as the neuroma enlarges and the temporary changes in the nerve become permanent.
I think I'm already at the "persist for several days or weeks" stage because it's been 3 weeks with no relief, just a lot of frustration. Cortisone shots help some people but I don't think I'm one of them. Maybe it takes more than one shot. I go again on Tuesday so I guess I'll see what he says then.

I know you mentioned before that the balls of your feet hurt and you were going to the Doctors, what were the results? Bev

My aunt also recommended Equate brand (from Walmart) rub. She says it works really well and doesn't smell AT ALL. I'm not sure if they make it in extra strength or not. I'm going to Walmart on Tuesday and plan to check it out. I think the Salonpas patches work some but it is hard to keep them on. When I have them on my feet I think the combination of covering them with socks and then secure fitting shoes helps keep them in place. I can feel the one on the bottom of my foot where my toes attach to my foot starting to wad up right now though, that's a really awkward area to try and attach anything sticky to. I've put them on my lower back and they seem to help a little. You have to be careful though and not go to sleep at night with them on because the instructions say to not leave them on for more than 8 hours. I did that once and ended up with sore red rectangles on my skin where they were attached.

hmm WhitneyTeacher---I have never thought of Ben Gay. Do the Salonpas stickers work for you? I tried them and they never stuck to my skin, so I heaved them. I wake up in the morning so stiff, I wonder if I slathered on the Ben Gay at night it would help and cut down on the smell. Bev

I totally hear what you are saying re: the Eau de Ben Gay aura wafting around me. I have learned that, on days when I go to the YMCA, if I hit the hot tub first befor doing my walking and strength training, I have far less pain afterwards. I pay for it on days that I don't go to the Y, but the effects of the hot tub last me about 48 hours.

OK, I guess I just have to vent a little here. I have extra strength BenGay rubbed into both arthritic knees, something called Salonpas patches stuck to all the sore areas on my feet and I just took 800 mg of Ibuprofen (prescription) just so I could try to do what has become my daily exercise routine. The Salonpas were recommended by my aunt who has the same foot condition I do. She also suggested Gold Bond Pain Relieving Foot Rub which evidently is different than regular Gold Bond. What's wrong with this picture? I'm starting to just feel like a smelly old lady, no longer the motivated exerciser!
