I've been able to do exercise. It feels so great. I lost 4 pounds this week. My goal and desire is to be 20 lighter by my Birthday which is beginning of April. I'm well on my way!

Frank, because of my bad knees I cannot use the treadmill, but I do use the recumbant bike. The last time I tried the bike I had a hard time getting my leg over to the other side. I had to pull it over by pulling up on my pant leg. But I know I need to get back to exercising and there are lots of other equipment I can utilized to help me get back to exercising. I always have a book with me to read and it makes the time go by quicker Bev

Good idea Bev. I've seen a lot of people with books on treadmills and bikes.

Debbie,

I agree a food and exercise buddy would really help. But the help and advice I am getting from everyone is so helpful. I will begin going to the gym and just bring a book to read while I am on the bike and that will help. Bev

I think it would be great to have an exercise and food buddy. I find more success that way.

I do need a buddy to exercise with. I tried talking to a few women in the locker room, and I think they thought I was hitting on them LOL. So most people at the gym just work out and then leave. Seems kinda cold, but that works for them. You are right I have to hit the sheets earlier in the evening and get to use more of the daytime hours I have the gym membership, might as well use it. I am sure we are miles apart, but we would be great workout buddies. Bev

Find a friend to go with, and hit the sack earlier so you can get up. Excuses will make you feel guilty, which will exacerbate the problem. If you were in So. CA I would volunteer, but I suspect we live far apart.

It is just so hard for me to do when I get up at 11 am, seems like most of my daytime is gone. I should go in the afternoon but then I am dealing with all the people getting off work and the gym is packed and I have to wait to get on the equipment that I want. The morning handicapped spots are taken and I would have too far to walk. See, I told you I have all the excuses. but I am going to have to go and deal with the issues.

Then make your appointment for later in the morning - but if it isn't scheduled - your odds go way down. Can always find something else to do that's 'more important'. You are important too!!!

You could be right. If I had a buddy I would go more often. I used to do JAZZERCIZE at 5 am and there were 5 of us that would call each other up the night before to make sure we would be there. There were times if it wasn't for the gals calling me, I would not have gone. I lost soo many inches, but they lost the lease to the building and so I stopped going. I just have to put it in my mind to go. Another of my problems is so that I don't graze at night, I do jigsaw puzzles and that keeps me focused but I am up till 2 or 3 am and don't get up early to give myself that boost to go to the gym.

That's where I used to go for my water therapy. I had to do that so I had no problem going. Must admit if I were going for exercise in general, I would try to find a buddy to go with me, or I would make a date with myself, on the calendar, for the same day(s) and same time every week. If it's on the schedule you will probably find it's easier to do it. We can all find excuses not to find time to exercise, but if it is scheduled in advance you have a better chance of doing it.

Gods_Serenity - Because you asked where I go, I cannot think of the dumb name of the gym to save myself. I know it is a FITNESS Gym and it is nationwide. I know this because I paid a tad extra to be able to use it wherever I travel in the USA. Like I am going to look for a gym when I am on vacation. LOL Instead of going to the gym today, I went for a much needed pedicure. It is all about the massage chair, the leg massage and the flowers. LOL Wasn't too expensive but well worth the pampering. LOL Beveg, where do you go? I wanted to join a place with a pool. That;s why I chose the Y. Now it looks like I won't be joining. I wanted to try it out for a week. Now time is running out. That's pretty cheap!!

Here in Sacramento area the gyms are $9 a month with no contract. I pay $99 a year, so I have no excuse not to go. I do need to talk myself into going, as I pass it every day and wave as I go by LOL. I spend more time getting out of my car, limping in and changing into my gym togs than I spend on the gym floor working out. Bev

No, the JOIN up fee is 13.00 instead of 150.00. until the end of Jan. Then you PAY 45.00 a month and health ins. pays 20.00. so it ends up being 65.00 a MONTH.

$13.00/month is pretty cheap compared to the private gyms. They still have to pay for the building, the utilities, and the help out of that. Hope it stays alive for you.

Fran, thanks for the tip! Our Y's seem pretty busy. Right now there is a promotion joining for 13.00. Here we pay month to month. So no contracts.

Debbie, keep an eye on the financial position of your "Y". Three of them in our area have folded - filed Chapter 7, which is out of business permanently. Not a good thing.

Thank you all, for your responses. I've heard the pool is good place to go. I'm thinking of joining the Y. They have a few water classes for arthritis. So it's a good thing to try to do some exercise everyday even when the leg is feeling sore? I'm feeling I should move or it could get worse. Although, I have days where I'm pain free. I'm hoping my supartz injections kick in soon!

Vanessa, I don't do any high intensity workouts. All very low impact. Walk away the pounds DVD's. If you've heard of those?? I have a treadmill and stationary bike. I'm thinking the weather has been very cold. Maybe that's why the side of my knee has been sore.

Thanks for the help!

I so wish I could have a pool I could go to, that I could afford.
Swimming, walking through water, anything is made more gentle on the body or the joints, just because of the water.

When I go to the gym I use the recumbant bike (less stress on knees) and will walk in the pool for about 15 mine. Haven't done it lately, but I need to get myself to go. I talk myself out of going because it hurts, but I know I have to work through the pain because afterwards I do feel better.

What kind of exercise are you doing?

I used to run a lot, but then ended up getting smacked with rheumatoid arthritis, so I haven't been able to do that regularly lately. After pouting for a while about not being able to run, I took some swimming lessons, which is fun. I also got a bike for Christmas and love riding outside. Both of those are pretty gentle on the joints. If you have access to a gym, you might try the elliptical or the stationary bike. The important thing with all of these things is to listen to your body and stop when it hurts too much.

"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary-wise; what it is it wouldn't be, and what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?" - Alice from Alice in Wonderland

Debbie - I used to work out in the gym every day, but my knees got so bad that there were some of the machines or exercises that I could not do. I have used the pool to walk and that helps, but most of the time I lay in my bed and do some exercises, because if I got down on the floor I could not get up by myself. Have you tried some of the video exercises on the website here? I do them and it helps me. I know my problem is my weight and I am working on that. Bev

I'm new to having OA. Diagnosed this past Oct. I have pre arthritis. Some days my outer knee (where the OA is) feels really good I can exercise for 30-45 minutes. Then for a few days (2-4) I can't seem to do much. What has been your experience with exercise. I really miss exercise. Believe it or not! I seen many of you do large amount of exercise. Could you tell me your experience with this.

Thanks!
