I have rheumatoid arthritis

osteo arthritis in my right knee and spine

I am hurting badly this morning

I had a total knee replacement, left knee, 3 1/2 months ago

I walk with a cane most of the time

I have severe balance issues

and I got up at 5 a.m. determined to not let arthritis dictate my life. I pushed the play button on the dvd player and walked 1 hour and 23 minutes with leslie sansone (equal to six brisk miles) and I am pain free right now. I learned a long time ago when I'm in to much pain to workout I am in to much pain to NOT workout. Believe me...I have issues!!! That knee replacement was a major trauma to my body and only a few weeks ago too! See my photos in my photo album on my sp page....but beware they are graphic. Here I am today....walking six miles! It started in pain but ended in relief. Oh it will be back tomorrow and again tomorrow I i will get up early and push the play button.

I am heavily involoved in the embassy of hope. Link below.

What is that called? I am curious, and have had spinal pain for the past five years.

Dear Libby...........

I feel with you and understand, I walked Maxie this morning only 30 minutes and ended up with a thigh cramp out of this world, then I worked in the garden for 4 hours, at least there I could sit when I needed to I was redoing the plastic under the walking stones in the path around it. after that my whole body screamed and I still had laundry to do, nothing helps for the pain,
Thinking od you emoticon

Dear Libby,
I am sorry I got dragged away from here before I could really answer your message and I am sorry if I upset you. When I said shocked, I meant that I was hoping that you had a good pain management doctor and that he kept tabs on you and helped you. I got a phone call to take a friend's friend and her dog to the vet 20 miles away on a Sunday and just rushed my answer and just now read it and am sorry........wow, too much going on.

I loved our jacuzzi tub and when we moved here I got a pad that makes my tub a jacuzzi tub and swirls the hot water all around me and relaxes my muscles.

You sound like you have lead a very active life and have done some fun things and some wonderful things..........and now you can't and that has to be the pits. I hate pain and am terrible at it. I will have to have a knee replacement soon but for now the Synvisc-One shots work and keep me active without pain.

Have you tried an electric scooter to do your chores with and walking Lucy with on the days you can't walk without a lot of pain? Our neighbor has one and she is on the go all the time and even has the city bus pick her up.

I will be praying for you as I know pain is the last straw and there should be some help for you if you can find the right doctor. Since my husband's stroke almost 10 years ago I have found I am falling apart and most of it is from stress. Hang tough and keep on doing what works for you. I appologize if I did any harm with my answer. Shame on me for getting rushed and not getting it down the way I wanted to say it. You are amazing!! Marianne

Dear Libby,
My only advice to you is don't give up hope. Take it one day at a time and if necessary one hour at a time. Pain is very hard to deal with but it can be done. Have you talked to a pain specialist yet? They can help you learn to meditate and breathe through rough times. The most important thing is to not stop moving. Keep in touch with us, we are here for you. God Bless.

For 35 years I had an active and very responsible career. I traveled extensively and retired early as a Vice President and manager of my department of a world-class bank. I retired early due to illness......cancer, blood diseases......blood clots/embolisms....etc. etc. As I recovered....I filled my days with satisfying activity.

Up until a few years ago, I held three volunteer jobs at the same time, walked 25-30 miles a week, went to the gym regularly, made & sold lovely jewelry and had a very active social/cultural life.

Then slowly, body part by body part started 'going'. I've had Synvisc on one knee (bone on bone)- did nothing,
Then I had 5 Stuparz injections in each knee and can manage to walk maybe a mile. I have progressive spinal stenosis in both my upper and lower spine = which on bad days almost cripple me. I've had a procedure in my spine which 'cleans' the spinal canal of soft 'stuff' that presses on nerves and causes pain. I've developed neuropathic pain in my feet and my hands hurt so much, that I cry on some days. I lost count of the glasses I've broken.

Today, Lucy and I took a maybe 2 mile walk = resting at intervals and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Now, two hours later......I hurt like crazy.
Walking Lucy has saved me from a wheelchair; that I'm sure of. But for the rest -- I am trying the very best I can to tackle each day.

I'm not lazy.....I want to work and/or volunteer more than anything. I'm just not reliable....there are days when all I can manage to do is to take Lucy out for her walks. There are other days when I am capable of doing much more. Problem is...........I don't know from day to day how I'm going to feel.

I feel that the Humpty Dumpty they are trying to put back together again will in no way resemble a real egg!!!!

THAT's why I'm bored and restless...........

Libby

Wow, I am kind of shocked. I had physical therapy in a hot, salt water pool for 5 weeks, twice a week and it really helped all my joints and arthritis pain to loosen up my body and I had to keep moving and start water aerobics to keep flexible. I get Synvisc-One gel shots in my left knee to keep me moving as it is bone on bone and needs a knee replacement when I can't stand the pain any longer. The shot stops the pain for about 6 months.

I take Tylenol Arthritis for my hands and other joints that hurt but walking helps me a lot.

There is a chair exercise class on here that is wonderful and will help you stay active and not bored. Get a stability ball and use it in front of the tv and the computer for balance and for core strength.

I do a lot of volunteer work with the homeless and with neglected and abused kids and that keeps my mind busy and me on the go. I am 69 and retired at 60 when my husband had a stroke. It has been a rough ten years of taking care of him and our home, etc. We are selling our home and moving near our daughter and her family in the next month.

When I am in pain, it is almost too much to handle, but I try to keep hydrocodone around for those nights when I cannot sleep due to pain. I am sorry you are hurting so badly and I am praying you get some answers on here to make life better. Marianne

I am not in your pain level but...
I hurt and it is hard to keep a job.
I found working part time as a cafeteria worker or yard duty.

My pain levels have gone through the roof these past few years. I am being treated with all sorts of pain meds, and treatments which make me tired, weak and lethargic. I'm also 67 with good years ahead. I'd love to find a part time job to bring in a little money (Lord knows, I can use it) and to keep me 'in the loop'. But I don't consider me a reliable employee....since I never know how I'll feel when I wake in the morning. Surely, some of you out there have that problem.....how do you handle the uncertainty???
I retired this spring at the early age of 57 but it was that or resigning or being fired. It seems that teachers with seniority and more degrees ( translate higher pay scale) are being evaluated. I would also like to work part time but have the same feeling that I do not know what day will bring.
One thing that I have done is sign up for exercise classes certified by the Arthritis Foundation and it has alleviated some of my pain. Secondly I did not look at your career experience but check out www.care.com there are some ideas for part time job experience.
Enjoy your day outside. emoticon

My life tomorrow will be the result of my attitudes and the choices I make today.

Good morning all.
I wrote a blog this morning.....a painful blog....but I had to get it out!!! I've become quite comfortable with all you great people......who share in the problems associated with arthritis and related diseases.

My pain levels have gone through the roof these past few years. I am being treated with all sorts of pain meds, and treatments which make me tired, weak and lethargic. But I don't consider me a reliable employee....since I never know how I'll feel when I wake in the morning. Surely, some of you out there have that problem.....how do you handle the uncertainty???

I guess I'm just venting....there are no easy answers, just more questions.

I could do some work at home, if I could find anything remotely interesting that paid any money (I don't need much......) Any suggestions??

I have a very small social network to fall back on, since, sadly, I lost all my close friends and relatives who lived nearby over these past few years. And Lucy, while she is a life-saver, keeps me more or less chained to the house.

I'm doing everything I can to deal with my pain.....for the rest.....I don't seem to have a handle on the other parts of my life these days.

But, it's finally a beautiful day here in Brooklyn....and I'll spend a good deal of it outside.

Have a wonderful day, all.

Hugs, Libby emoticon
