Wow I feel your pain...literally...smile. I am in the middle of a flare-up right now and am doing the same thing. I stepped back and analyzed why am I overeating and eating the wrong things. Figured out that comfort foods switch on brain chemicals that block the pain while I am eating. Find myself wanting to snack all day. In the long run it will make things worse so like you I am trying to break this cycle. Hang in there!!!!!

They put off my SYNVISC-ONE gel shot in my left knee for two weeks as the doctor's office ordered the wrong shot and the dr. is now on vacation this week. I get it the 29th and am counting on it to stop the knee pain and let me walk again.

Escrow on the house is due to close today unless we hit another snag........

Have you tried the pain relieving gels Sombra and Icy Blue? They help me a lot especially when I am trying to go to sleep. They keep my knees warm and I put a pillow between them and sleep on my side.

I try to not buy comfort foods but sometimes a healthy food can be binged on also.

Marianne

Libby everyone has pretty much covered everything. Drink lots of water, keep your hands busy and have healthy snacks around. I also find getting on the spark page helps a whole lot too. Good Luck to you.

I also knit or crochet - it keeps my hands busy and out of the snack bowl. I also have something to show for my effort.

Thanks all........

.....for your sage words of support and advice......and humor. Humor helps best when I'm in pain.

But seriously, food shouldn't be a comfort. I'll double-down on my efforts not to eat tonight.
I DO read myself to sleep usually (or TV)....but when I'm restless, I seek food.
Just have to work on it harder.....and your tips will help.

Great big hugs to everyone!!!

Hi Libby - consider yourself kicked. I just had my last knee injection today. So far I haven't seen much difference. Still lots of pain when walking. I too have a problem with nocturnal munching. I even have to walk up stairs to get to the food so I can appreciate your problem. Drink lots of waterr and hang in there. Jane

Watermelon! Lots of watermelon! I also keep the 100 calorie Jolly Time microwave popcorn handy - it's amazing how much you get in one bag. I'm going for a Synvisc One injection tomorrow - so I know exactly how you feel! emoticon emoticon

You said that you are eating what looks comforting. What foods are they? Can you not have them in the house?

Could you chew gum instead?

I would try a distraction for at least 15 minutes. Preferably something you can't eat and do at the same time. That helps a lot for me. If you do binge, forgive yourself and move on. The guilt afterwards just sets you up to do it again.

Good luck!

Hang in there Libby and grab some fruits and melons and cut them up and have them ready to grab when you are in pain and discouraged and think food is the answer. I'd give you a swift kick but it would hurt my knee........ha ha Pain is our enemy and those of us that lean on comfort foods have to learn to lean on fruits and veggies instead.

You can do this and start a food journal and write down when the pain strikes and what you eat ........and keep a food diary of your whole day. It helps to see the calories add up.

My prayers are with you and I am looking forward to my next knee injection this week as I am really fighting pain and can't walk or pack well when hurting. Pity parties are the pits.

Hi, I know exactly what you mean. If there is stress, I eat. I have started doing anything that I can in order not to eat. Read a book, take a walk, whatever it takes, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Good luck

Good morning all.
Just after my last knee injection....I'm having a serious, painful arthritis flareup all over my body. I know it will pass......but I'm falling back into my old habit of mindless nighttime eating. This will certainly sabotage my weight loss efforts.

Can someone give me a REAL kick in the pants, please??

I've always used food to soothe in times of stress.....and pain is stress!! I thought I'd beaten this horrible habit.....but as I lay in bed, trying to get comfortable, I get restless and to take my mind off the pain.....I go into the kitchen and grab whatever looks comforting. Useles calories.

Help, please??
Many thanks,
Libby emoticon
