Hello Everyone, I have been gone a very long time, kinda fell off the wagon for awhile.
I am back now, looking forward to meeting new friends and gettng advice and tips on how to stay motivated to try and lose some weight to help ease my joints and back.

I have severe osteoarthritis or as they call it DJD in both knees and DDD in my lower back and my rt hip. So you can imagine at my current weight it's difficult to exercise effectively for any period od prolonged time without a lot of pain at sometime from somewhere.

emoticon emoticon emoticon I have arthritis in my hands, legs, knees and feet. I walk with a walker because I had a stroke 3 years ago. I do in-house walking, I ride the pedalizer/bike and I do occupational therapy, for 220 minutes, 6 days each week.

I am kinda new here. I've had SP for almost a year, but just now I'm starting to use it. I have arthritis in my knees and right hip. I also have a sciatic in my right knee/leg. I have stopped drinking caffeine about 4 months ago, and since then the pain has subsided to about 50-75% - much more tolerable than before. And since taking off 116 lbs, that has helped drastically too. I started at 354 lbs and I'm now, today, at 238. It's not easy in the least. I also so understand with Marieyvonne1! I tried walking about six months ago just around my block, about a mile's distance, but had to send my husband (in his electric wheelchair) to go get the truck because I could not finish! There are some fantastic videos here on SP for chair exercises too. As long as the muscles are engaged, we are headed in the right direction.

Hello ladies well today I decided to walk to the grocery store,it is a 15 minute walk at the most but it took me 45 minutes to walk it. Many times I did not think that I would make it My leg kept giving out on me and the pain was unbearable. I guess my walking exercise is over,I already had exrays and the doctor told me that my hip and leg have both worn out so now I am waiting to go for a scan of my spine. It looks like I will have to put walking on hold for awhile and the hopes of losing any amount of weight.I will try to just hold where I am now and not gain.

Just finished with therapy yesterday. I am going to get a ten's unit. It really seemed to help.

I am trying to eat right and loose some weight. Everyday except on weekends I try to do some kind of exercise. Even if its just swinging my arms. Got to keep moving or I will not be able to.

Try to keep warm. Barbara

Yes I too have learned our bodies are unique, still some things never change. Such things as sugar, they cause inflammation.. I have been getting into the junk food, and now am suffering. I notice my right hip and leg are really sore, sometimes I can barely move it... I have been using a safe heating pad, the heat really helps me, now there's a variable that seems to be widespread..So like the heat , some like the cold on there arthritic areas.. I read that cold is good for the first 24 hours after the injury, and after that heat should be used. Still, the body is unique and others swear by the cold for their arthritis... I , also, have been prescribed an anti inflammatory, which helps.. Rest, water, better nutrition, and exercise in moderating, gentle ones to start off with , at least. This is what I do.. emoticon

We are finally home safe and sound, but caught colds coming back. So, I have done no exercises for days.

Thanks, Maggie, for the information about diets. I am learning that our bodies are so unique that what works for one person, may not work for someone else.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease which seems to have a different cause(s) in each person. Some people find plants of the nightshade family bother them (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and nicotine). Others may be triggered by sugar.

It is a big detective story to try to find which foods are each person's problems. And the scientist have not found much evidence to prove anything. They did have one study which showed fasting could provide some relief, but that is of limited usfulness, isn't it. I am not good at deprivation.

So, I go to the Rheumatologist and use western medicenes and continue to investigate diet as a possible way to avoid some of the "flares".

The other arthritis…. I have no information.

I have been traveling since Thursday so little PC time.

Maggie - does sugar and dairy products cause inflammation for osteoarthritis or just RA?

Ladydg - I am so sorry that you are being this pain. What does the doctor say?

Julia - I am glad that the water exercise is helping you. I don't have access to a pool, but IF it was warm, it sounds good.

I have a lingering flare in my left wrist and hand (RA) and then yesterday I think I pushed myself a little too much. I'm prepping the house for showing for sale. And I'm lifting some heavy things which of course puts stress on the hands, wrists, and shoulders. This morning I am in more pain than normal. I'm going to work on avoiding milk and sugar today, and try really hard to be careful, but I've got a helper coming over this afternoon to help move things into storage. I need to let him do the heavy lifting, but I must say it hurts my pride to do so.

I hope everyone else here is doing well, and if feeling the pain, has some strategies for minimizing or eliminating it.

emoticon everyone. Just popping in to read how everyone is doing. We are having changing weather as a normal Fall. The leaves ate turning and the air is fresh. My OA and colder weather don't mix, but I'm spending as much time in the pool as possible. The water exercise helps me manage the pain.
I hope everyone has a wonderful evening.

Today is so much better than yesterday! I did my stationary bike for 20 minutes and my physical therapy for my knees. I think the weather and exercise may be keys to keeping the pain down.

SBecker - I had an aunt that had RA. My understanding is that it is much worse than what I have which is just knees wearing out because of wear and tear and genetics. I am 68 years old so I guess that is to be expected. I do hope that you have good results on November 12.

Janet - I LOVE your dreams and your goals on your Spark Page! You also have some great goals for losing weight and taking care of yourself. If we look at weight loss as a life style and not a "diet", it is easier. It may not come off as fast but we can maintain our weight loss. But I am sure you already know this. I have been on Spark People since 2007 and belong to several teams. I also use the articles and blogs to inspire me to stay healthy.

I have another RA flare. I saw a specialist and got more DMARDs. I have hand exercises and ordered a splint for my right hand (to start with) for use a night. I'm keeping positive. I have great doctors who are working with me. I have my blood tests on November 12. I may have another MRI of my hands ahead of me.

I am on my way to better health!

Hello,
this is my first time in this group. I am learning my way around this site. If you read my page you will know all my problems. I am new with all this arthritis stuff and I am trying to deal with it the best I can. So far I want to sell my three bedroom, 2 1/2 bath home and rent for a small two bedroom. Our dream is to actually live on a boat about a 40 footer and do the American Loop. After a few years of that maybe 10 years I would like to find a spot in South Carolina and buy a piece of land and build a Maryland style Lighthouse to live in. Yes I have big dreams, they keep me going. More later ........... got to go

Janet

Have a fun filled day!

Today my arthritis is really acting up if I sit very long, plus going up and down stairs. I just took two (or was it three) ibuprofens, so hopefully that will help. The house is empty so I need to focus on getting some things done around here. Does anyone else have problems getting housework, etc. done if someone else is in the house? I can't blame it on my husband, because I was this way when I was a teen-ager.

Julia - I LOVE the new start page! It seems to have so much in one place. I like being able to track my water and other measurements in one place.

Pattie - I have tried braces and big wraps and I always think they make my knee hurt more. Other friends swear by them. Don't push retirement. I miss working sometimes so much!

Good Morning All,

Hope everyone is doing well. I've been pretty busy the past few weeks. Got DD#2 moved down to San Diego in her own place and she is busy with school at the University of California in San Diego.

Last week I was on vacation and got a lot of things done. Took DD#1, our special needs daughter, to Disneyland. Spent the day there and had a good time. Knee did pretty good as long as I wear my brace. With DD#2 taking all her bedroom furniture and some of the living room things I was able to go to our storage and get some pieces out to fix up the bedroom and fill in with some of the living room things. Friday we took a day trip and had a very relaxing time. Went up through Santa Barbara and took in some sights.

Back to work this week. Really would like to find a way to not work but still collect my salary. Oh well, maybe the lotto some day.

Take care all. Pattie

I've never used the Start page that much but it looks to me like this reworking of it should be pretty helpful for those of us who do use it. Guess only time will tell for sure...

Theresa - I have never had my knee lock up the way you described, although my mother has had her thumb lock up (she is 94). I am sorry for what you will be going though before knee replacement. I want to put it off as long as possible, but when the pain is so bad, I am ready to do something. Tomorrow I will get my second Synvisc shot. Yesterday, I was almost pain free most of the day, but we have a front coming in, so it is up today.

I have never heard of Etodolac. I will have to check it out for future knowledge.

I can totally relate to the pain. I have arthritis in both thumbs (yep - the thumbs only), lower back, right hip and both knees. I take Etodolac in the morning and the evening, Tylenol through the day. I had bypass surgery (bariatric) so not supposed to take anything in the Aleve/Advil family. They have found the Etodolac gives some relief and not as harmful to my tummy pouch.

I am having knee replacement surgery two weeks from today. The normal angle from upper leg bone thru the knee and down is 7 degrees and my right knee is over 20. Prob why the rest of my body feels so out of kilter! I have to give up the Etodolac a week before the surgery so imagine the pain will be unbearable by the time I have the surgery!

Has anyone every had your knee LOCK into place? It's happened twice in the last two weeks. One night I slept with it cocked up and then I had to manipulate it with my hands to help unbend it. This week it was the opposite! Had it laying straight (slept on my tummy) and when I tried to roll over I couldn't bend it. Brought TEARS streaming down my cheeks!

God bless,
Theresa

Still lots of pain this morning, but I am determined to get a little housework done today....just dusting.

Renie - I understand the pain. Is yours in your knee or somewhere else? As to taking pain medication with your medication. I also have to take Thyroid medication early in the a.m. and can't eat breakfast for at least 30 to 60 minutes. I just lay in bed and drink coffee and wake up slowly (I am 68 and retired). My doctor says it is ok for me to take pain medication as long as I stay within the limits on the bottle. BUT, I am not familiar with your other medications. My suggestion is to leave a non-urgent message with your doctor's office and ask them. Everyone is so different and react to medications differently. You could also talk to the pharmacist, but I imagine they would want you to talk to your doctor.

Hello, all. So glad to meet you all. I'm hoping I'll hear from some of you if you have any experience with the things I'm dealing with.

I have to take my Thyroid meds early in the a.m.-- like 6 a.m. no food or other meds an hour before or after.
Then I have another med that I'm not supposed to take any other meds or eat for an hour before or after.
So, here I am into my day by two-three hours & it's time to take the rest of my a.m. meds and can eat with them.

Here's my question: Are you able to take a pain pill with thyroid meds? My other med is Provigil and I'm asking the same questions. By this time I am really hurting and can hardly walk, let alone get out of bed.

By the time I get through staggering my a.m. meds, it seems like my day is half over. I also have diabetes, so waiting too long is also a problem.

It's nice to meet you arthritis folks, and hope we can become better acquainted.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yah, like I wish I could do all those things. Still trying, though.

hope everyone is doing well. No new posts going on here.

Well I will just stop by to say Hi to all.
I've been busy the past few days. DD #2 was able to find an apartment in San Diego just in time to go back to school at the University of California at San Diego. She and I took a 2 and 1/2 hour trip down on Saturday to sign the paperwork and take a car load of things down and back home the same day. Then we did it again on Monday. We will be getting a big truck and the big move on Monday. I have to work but DH has the day off. So it will be a trip down, unload and back home in one day. 1st day of school for her is Sept. 26. With her down there I now have a empty bedroom. Looking forward to fixing it up and having a little extra space.

That's it for now. Take care all. Pattie

Hello all,
I'm still here. Just not able to get on line a lot. Been trying to catch up with everyone here. I have been logging in everyday on my Kindle but the app doesn't let me access my teams. I get home from work and I'm tired and don't feel like starting the computer up and I just grab the Kindle. Must get out of that habit so I can socialize with all of you.

I have a new boss and I'm trying to adjust but she isn't making it easy. I did have a nice talk with my work rep and hope things will turn around soon.

Looking forward to the weekend to get some cleaning done around the apartment. Hope to burn some fat while I do it.

Hope everyone is doing well. Until next time, take care. Pattie

I'm still here, ladies, I just don't have that much to say recently. We've been having a bit of rain that Barbara finally got around to sending us, so of course my joints have been aching. But I've still been loving the rain because it's such a rare and special event around here. Only problem with it is driving in it when it's dark. Last night when I was leaving work I drove over the edge of the median when I was turning out onto the big road that takes me most of the way home from work because I was having trouble seeing well in the dark with the rain. emoticon I just went out to check and my car seems to be okay, no pool of oil underneath it. (Thank goodness) Guess I'd better be more careful if it's raining again after work tonight... emoticon

There was much rejoicing!

Yes where is everyone? I'm thinking of dropping this team. No ones here but you and I and we're on another team together so why stay here?
I'll have to start day 1 tomorrow I've already have eaten about 600 cals and it's not lunch time yet. I had to eat something so I could take my pills and than I took a friend to the Dr. She wanted breakfast so we went to Denny's and I had the Belgium waffle with bacon & egg. It was very good. I only ate 3/4 of the waffle.
Thurs. Day 1
Take care I care. Artsky

42 here last night. Wish it was going to be spring instead of fall.

Going to LLBean today. DH needs to get some new shoes. All his others hurt him. We will see what we can do.

Managed to take Buttercup for a walk yesterday. Trying to get some exercise in. If I gain anymore weight they will be able to just roll me like a ball.

Going on Day 3. So sick of being big. Got to loose weight.

Hugs Barbara

Barbra we had 2 GGS born this summer and we live 1700 miles away so we haven't met either one of them until next month when we go up for our GD's conformation.
Was just going out to get the mail but it's raining so I guess I'll wait a while.

Barbara, I'm starting to get used to my new hours...most of the time. Last night I couldn't fall asleep to save my life. I was awake at 4:30 so I turned off the alarm clock that goes off first. I feel okay this morning but now my time frame for getting out the door has really been compressed. Oh well, I'll be okay...and hopefully I'll even be able to get to work on time...

Artsky, I don't know why but for some reason I thought that your GGS was a teenager. I hope they find the right size instruments and that the surgery is completely successful. I'll be praying for him.

I hope that everyone has a really great day.

There was much rejoicing!

DH is back to normal. Full speed ahead. Was so quiet when he was in the hospital. LOL
Poor old fellow is not yet dead.

Artsy it will feel good to hold that baby again. They must live quite a ways from you?

Brrrrrr so cold had to put the heat on today.

Hi there Dee Dee Dee. Hugs you keep praying for us now. Think we all need it.

Vali are you starting to get used to your new hours? You sound better. Not complaining at all. Is this the Vali we know and love?

DH wants to go grocery shopping. Got to go.

Hugs Barbara

Val the Dr. postpone because he didn't have the right size instrument for his small head. GGS is keeping down some food but not enough for him to gain back his weight. He is almost 8 mos. and is under 15 lbs. He is a very happy baby. I can't want to hold him in Oct.
Have a great day all.

Artsky, seems like the good news (if there ever is any when someone you love is having brain surgery) is that it they can postpone the surgery then the situation is not as terrible as it could be. Obviously not great, I'm definitely not trying to tell you not to worry at all. But looks like he must be doing well enough that his doctors think it's okay to postpone the surgery. Please keep us updated on all of this.

Barbara, how is your cute little DH feeling now that he's gotten a little bit of rest? I hope that he's doing okay now.

There was much rejoicing!

It's always good to have someone who can translate doctor talk (which is definitely a language other than English) when you're in a hospital. I'm glad that your DD was with you, and also that your DH seems to be feeling better. emoticon
