I also agree. Any time I overindulge in sugar or simple carbs I hurt a lot more.
My DH's birthday with chocolate cake, cookes etc did me in. His sister brought fresh salt water taffy, argh. Yes, I hurt a lot right now. I knew that sugar really kicked up the fibro pain, but now is aggrevates the arthritis as well.

Now that I have been "good" and cut back on the sugary treats I feel better. I never appreciated how much stress sugar puts on the body.

I agree that processed foods could be a cause of pain along with caffienated beverages. I drink 1/2 cafe coffe and I try not to eat sugary foods. The pain is intermintent, but not as bad as it was. emoticon

Hi, I'm Deb. My husband & both have arthritis. Since starting a juice blend called monavie about 3 months ago we have had a lot less pain. It is powerfully anti-flammatory because of all the antioxidants and it really really works. one version even has glucosamine, soon to be a fully plant based glucosamine. I use the one without glucosamine and it works for me. I am a PA and know all the potential side effects from pred and nsaids but before monavie I had to take them to get to work and keep moving. Neither my husband or myself has had to take either one since week 2 (he was week 1) on the juice. I wish everyone would try it... it works for 90 % that try it . I think the 10 % that don't see a vast improvement are not doing it like they recommend, or just have so much disease it might take a little longer and they quit too soon. It has helped my and my husband so much. It might be worth a try, and it has a moneyback guarantee. Call at 478-994-4326 if you are interested in more info. I work all day but I check my answering machine every night.

It is not only the refined carbs but also wheat, rice, and other grains.

On the Zone diet small amounts of these are allowed but they have an acid in them that can make arthritis worse.

My wheat intake is very low, maybe a couple of times a week. I eat steel cut oats every other day and the rest of my carbs come from fruit, vegetables, and a small amount of beans.

I hadn't thought about refined sugar an and flour causing more pain but since I've moved in with my daughter and she bakes alot and the pain level and the weight has gone up. Maybe I should reallly be more consciece and then they will both gone down.

I am 43 and the past 1-2 years I have been having a lot of joint pain and stiffness. It has been getting very bad. Every morning when I got up I would hobble and groan because the pain was so bad. On January 1st I watched The Learning Channel and they had a program about a 1200 pound man losing weight on the Zone diet. So On January 2nd I started the Zone diet.

After a week I started noticing less joint pain and stiffness. Now it has been almost 3 weeks and my pain is at least 80 % better. I can spring out of the bed and no hobbling! I can sit for and hour or so and get up and walk normally.
This diet has changed my life. I have lost 7 pounds and have not been hungry or shakey at all.

I got on the computer this morning thinking about starting a thread on sugar and joint pain, but you beat me to it.LOL.

Interesting information from all. I will definitely do some research. I have been off red meat and sugar for awhile now and am definitely not as stiff.

Hi all,

I was curious about this as well, what in our diet did affect joint pain. One thing seems clear is that it depends on the type of arthritis you have and if you have food allergies. For gout, not eating red meat seems important. Others suggest vitamin C is Not good for some arthritis and Good for others. One suggestion in this article was to try eliminating one thing at a time from your diet and see how you respond.

The main thing I seemed to find is that your mileage may vary.

Here is one interesting link anyhow:

There is an article somewhere here about red meat and arthritis too. I'm really a newcomer here and am having trouble keeping things in my mind, about where I read things, but I was wondering how many of you have tried to cut down on your red meat consumption. That alone has helped my arthritis pain immensly. I don't do much sugar anyway, but was a beef a holic before I read about red meat before I joined this team. Sorry I can't give you a clue but perhaps someone else can tell you how to find that article or maybe put it in 'search'.

When I was told that I had arthritis, I started doing some heavy reading on foods to eliminate from diet, and artificial sweetners, red meat, alcohol and white bread were among the top pain triggers in the list. Marie K

I haven't noticed that sugar affects my arthritis but then I don't have much food with added sugar or that is sugary. I do eat fruit but I don't add sugar to things.

I had an email with information about artificial sweeteners. It said that they can cause inflamation of joints and can also cause symptons like those of MS and Fibromyalgia and that some people are being wrongly diagnosed with these diseases.

I have also noticed the connection. I did a search and there were many articles connecting sugar with arthritis and other inflamations in your body.
I have fallen off the wagon big time in the last couple of months.Sugar is the one thing I can't stay away from.My arthritis is worse now that it has been in a long time. I would love to cut sugar out of my life but it has a strong hold on me. I have done it before and I can do it again.

Unfortunately, with the holiday season I've been eating a few cookies and a piece of pie or two. My hands and knees and back have started killing me again! I just hurt all over. When I was off of sugar with my diet, I had so little pain I was amazed! I am going back on my diet for the lesser pain if nothing else!
Thanks for everyone's thoughts here, it's nice to see so many other people experience the same sort of thing so I don't think it's just a lucky coincidence!

I've never noticed a difference, but will try to take note of any changes the next time I eat pasta or something with sugar. My knee is perpetually swollen, so that could be the main reason why I haven't noticed.

I never would have thought that these foods (my faves) could affect my arthritis.

You are so right! My doctor told me that refined sugars in sweets and in white bread and pasta cause inflamation in the joints. I am to stay away from those things and red meat. I LOOOVE all of those foods, but I keep them to a minimum. I really notice a difference when I am eating right (whole wheat, poultry and fish with lots of veggies).

hrm, that's an interesting connection you might've found. i can't say i've experienced the same, then again if i stay away from sweets for too long i start craving them all the time, haha. i wouldn't call myself a chocoholic but regular doses = happy. i try to stay with dark chocolates and not those all sugar things so maybe that's helped balance things. i'd definitely be interested to see if anyone has ever tried to research that correlation.

i truly think though that different things will affect different people in different ways so maybe a low sugar diet won't work as well in one person as it does in others. i thought i read somewhere that dairy products had an affect on arthritis (made it worse) but maybe i'm thinking of some other affliction. reading too many articles can easily make the info get sooooo jumbled sometimes.

I don't notice much about my joints being better or worse with sugar; but my muscles definately feel better when I stay away from sugar and processed foods. I have both arthritis and fibromyalgia. Joyce

I always wondered if certain foods cause flair ups in arthritis but never found information on it. But last week I was really sore and it was after I had cake loaded with lots of icing. Ii am paying more attention to the foods I eat and will see what I ate the day before when I wake up feeling real achy.

I have noticed that when I stay away from the sweets, I too don't hurt as much. I do still take the Glucosamine/MSM complex and that helps me, too. I realize that there are people who can't take just anything, my mother is one of them, and she too has a bad knee [other has already been replaced] but refuses to have it replaced like she did the first one. She will be 81 on her next birthday and still works. She does the demos at places like Wal-Mart and grocery stores. I hope I can still be that active at her age.

Yes since I have stopped eating processed wheat and sugar my pain has gone down considerably and when I get into them my pain goes up very much.

I noticed within a few days of giving up sweets that my pain had significantly decreased. I've also noticed that since I've become a vegan and have given up milk that a whole lot more of my aches & pains have just gone. I don't use glucosomine or MSM because I have problems with my stomach when I do use them so know that that isn't the reason why I feel better. I just know that eating healthy foods and getting the weight off has made my life a "whole" lot better in many ways! Jenna

Thanks Kaye and Marianne. I have really noticed this difference and I'm amazed if low sugar is what is helping! I talked to a friend who's a vegan (no meat products or by-products at all) and she said her arthritis was terrible when she ate sugar or processed or refined sugar. I don't know that I want to go vegan but I have been keeping my sugar grams low and I think it may be the big factor in my reduced pain! I know the water helps too. Thanks again!

It seems that I've heard somewhere that a diet high in sugar makes arthritis worse. I once lost weight on a low-carb diet and I definitely had less pain but I also lost weight which could have been the reason my joints felt better. emoticon

I'm with you....it's probably a combination of things, but like you I've noticed that when I eat a lot of processed foods and sugar, that I seem to be more achy. Probably partially mental since I then also feel badly that I've eaten poorly. However, sometimes I feel achy, look back at what I've eaten, and more often than not it's been some highly processed food(s). I've also noticed that when I take a good B vitamin (especially with good B6) I feel better. So, maybe it's the good vitamins in good foods that's making us feel better too. No doubt a combination of a bunch of stuff, but it's reason enough for me to question myself whether I really want that sweet or not, for pain's sake!

Hey, I'm not sure why my arthritis pain is subsiding. When I was not eating properly (sugary sweets) I had more pain in my joints. I'm not sure if it's the extra water I'm drinking or my diet. I take Glucosamine Chondroitin and MSN which helps, I just wonder if anyone else sees more pain when they eat sweets. Let me know if you've every noticed this. Have an awesome painfree day!
