Hello, Twink...yes, my daughter sure is a great April Fooler. But I got her once.

That was a number of years ago when my Sweetie was in reasonably good health and (he was a drummer, one of the best in central Pennsylvania) was asked to substitute at a conservative, uh, what kind of church? pentecostal? they had lively music, and some people would dance in church, holy rollers? but nobody rolled, but one woman spoke in tongues.

They had a band playing this fun and lively music. The regular drummer asked my Sweetie to substitute when he couldn't be there. Sweetie earned some money for doing so. I came along (I was the roadie and helped haul the drums in).

I had a hell of a lot of fun. My shoes were off, and I was dancing. Too bad these people believe in gawd, this church rocks. We never got into religion with these people. Sweetie was doing a paid job and I was having a good time dancing. We never came out as atheists.

And then April Fool's rolled around. I sent an e-mail to my daughter and pretended that I'd gotten converted, that I'd found jesus. I laid it on thick, oooh, that preacher convinced me, I've been wrong all along, jesus is the savior, yak yak yak.

And I got her! My April Fool Joke fooled her, and she had quite an anxious moment before she scrolled on down to APRIL FOOL!!

I just LOVE April Fool's Day!

I haven't "gone to a movie" in years, and I have no idea how much it costs these days. I would have said that I'm waiting for the video, but videos are different nowadays. We don't go to the video rental store any more - those stores have all closed and are replaced by RedBox which I have no idea how to use, nor have I seen anything there I want to look at. And Netflix has some sort of streaming service that I don't have the technology to use.

I suspect it will eventually come out on video, and our little public library does offer DVDs. If the library gets it I may well watch it - but on a rainy day. I don't like to sit in front of the TeeVee on a nice sunny day.

But maybe I should have a look at this movie in one way or another. I get that it has the Christian fundies pretty upset.

Oh my gawd! It's April Fool's Day once again, and my daughter is the absolute Champion of April Fool's jokes. Hey! I know what day it is! I know better than to believe anything my daughter says on April 1, but she gets me every time!

She's in a mixed marriage. She is a fourth generation non-believer, and she married a Presbyterian. Never mind, we love the guy dearly, Christian or not.

So here it is April Fool's Day, and this smooth-talking daughter of mine told me that she agreed to be baptized this coming Sunday. Don't I know what day it is? Well yes, but my daughter is just so doggoned good at these stunts, such a smooth and convincing talker, and her stories are always so plausible. I responded, "Pete will be happy about it. You will be pleasing him, of course."

My daughter knows that even when she and I disagree about something, I'm still her best supporter. And there I was figuring she was doing this thing and going through the motions to make her husband happy...there I was reacting like the supportive elderly mother whose middle-aged daughter is going to do something I consider dubious as the dickens....

I know what day it is, don't I? But she was just so convincing. She does this thing so well. I fell right in, plop! I was convinced. I bought it, fell for it hook, line and sinker.

APRIL FOOL!!!

She nailed me AGAIN!!! Don't I know what day it is?

I love April Fool's Day!

Hello, Forest Pal...I'm in central Pennsylvania. I grew up in State College, where Penn State is, and I didn't feel uncomfortable being an atheist. I was outspoken about it. At age 42 I moved to a village just south of Ithaca NY, where Cornell is. I wasn't uncomfortable about being an atheist.

I was homesick, and in 2000 I moved back here to central PA, but found that inflation had priced me out of State College, so I ended up 10 miles to the north. Lovely little town, but this is Bibleburg, Christianvania. For the first time in my life I'm in the closet. Don't like it one bit, but I think the neighbors would shun me and shun me hard. We've been getting along and having a good neighborhood for these 14 years, and I'm reluctant to come out of the closet and upset the apple cart.

But there may come a day when it is time to stand up and be counted and take the risk.

Not only slow posting, my diet has stalled big time. Today is first day of Spring. I'm more than ready for it, and am determined to get back on the right path.

I live in East Texas, where its a big event to run into anyone liberal or agnostic. I feel like I'd be shot if I said I'm an Atheist.

If I were the dictator of the Benighted States I would absolutely BAN televangelists on the grounds of false advertising.

Here in Pennsylvania, in Pittsburgh we have Cornerstone TeleVision:

http://www.ctvn.org/

These people need a lot of money to run this TV enterprise, and they have a lot of telethons. Over and over. Several times a year, and for a long time. Unlike PBS, they make horrible promises. They target terrified people.

The hypothetical target has lost his job, his wife was just diagnosed with cancer, his daughter is pregnant and his son is on drugs. He can't afford to pay the mortgage, and the family will soon lose their home.

These loathsome crooks promise that if you'll pay a huge amount of money to Cornerstone, they will pray and god will reward you. The buzz term is "sow a seed". If you sow a seed equal to that mortgage payment, if you send them the money instead of applying it to the mortgage, if you send them the money instead of buying medicine you need, if you give them money you absolutely cannot afford to waste, then god will grant you a "harvest". You'll "reap" in exchange for "sowing". The televangelist prays, oooh, he makes these noisy dramatic prayers and claims god talks to him, and he tells anecdotes about people in desperate need who sowed a seed and now, look at what they reaped!!! They sowed a seed instead of paying that mortgage, and miraculously the bank just gave them the house for free! A miracle of faith!!

I reserve my anger for the televangelists. I know there are people who would condemn the desperate people who give their money away, shucks, don't they know any better?? They should just use their heads and THINK before giving their money to these crooks.

But I find it hard to condemn terrified and desperate people who are grasping at straws. Terrible stress and fear makes it hard for people to be reasonable.

These stinkin' televangelists are advertising falsely. Claiming that god talks to them, claiming that victims will "reap a harvest" in exchange for a huge amount of money, you'd think that these televangelists would be shut down. They're getting away with an awful con, but since it's religion, maybe that's why nobody stops them.

I consider the evangelical religionists our Taliban. Can you imagine our world if we were forced to live under their rules? As you pointed out, they already have the edge. No one dares run for federal office without religion. They also fight progress, deny science, and are suspicious of intelligence & learning.

I took a look at the SparkPeople community guidelines, and have some questions about this.

It says, "If you see something posted that you do not personally agree with, please avoid the post as your first response instead of making a negative comment or reporting it unless of course, it clearly a violates the Community Guidelines."

This sounds to me as if we are not allowed discuss something we disagree with. If we have a differing opinion, are we to simply shut up? Are we to not speak unless we are in agreement and are willing to go along amiably?

I see also, "No posts on the Message Boards that are political or religious in nature.
Those discussions should be reserved for SparkTeams related to these topics, since sensitive topics often cause controversy and negativity that we do our best to avoid in our positive and supportive Community."

It seems to me that there is a bit of a double standard here. I see lots and lots of religion on message boards that are not about religion or Christianity. It seems to me that people are free to discuss religion all they want in actual practice. But are we equally free to talk about no religion on those same boards?

Thank you, Richie, for the welcome. I'm interested in certain kinds of trouble making, being a fan of the late great Hitch.

At the same time I'm waiting to see what is and isn't acceptable here. I was reading the earlier posts in this thread, and I noticed something I'd like to question.

But I find that so often people perceive a question as an attack. I'm not looking to attack anyone here. Rather I'm interested in why people see things the way they do.

I'm also looking at the Team Stream. I see that most of the blogs are by people who are on this Team. But I see a blog from one person who is not a member here. What is it that gets blogs on particular Team Streams?

I'm really glad to find this team, as well as the other atheist team. It seems that Spark People is very Christian-heavy.

I know - that's the trouble always - Democrats have to GET OUT AND VOTE!

We have a very good friend who is forced to live in Kansas. She says the hatred for Obama is worse than anything we can imagine. She says they honestly want him dead. Dead!!!! This includes professors, and legislators as well as just folks. It's very scary.

She thinks it's because people are no longer taught how to use critical thought. Teachers around the country who are asked to point out the best students point to the most obedient students - not the ones who ask the most questions or who are eager to learn.

I don't know, I think there are very selfish wealthy folks who are pulling the strings in education, social issues, and regulatory efforts. Depressing.

Good points. I do NOT trust the Right one little bit. And they're crazy.

But - on the upside, check out this Texas judge who just switched from being a Republican to a Democrat. Of course, I'm not expecting him to be re-elected.

I just hope the dems don't snatch failure out of the jaws of success. We may be seeing some shifting in overall attitudes, but I never underestimates the right's ability to cheat their way to winning....the train wreck from the citizens united and other supreme court decisions, voter suppression, gerrymandering, etc. I am afraid that it is getting to the point that it will not matter what people think, the folks behind the curtain will pervail.....or maybe I just need another cup of coffee. emoticon

This weekend I was visiting an old friend in a rural area, very Republican area...and I was surprised time and again by folks in support of the Affordable Care Act and also willing to discuss their views and have an exchange of thoughts....not at all what I expected to find there. It's a beautiful day today. I am looking forward to my lunchtime walk.
I am bemused by the repositioning all of the republicans are engaged in. I just really hope they get really spanked in the midterm election.

I love it! On one of the other teams, I expressed my concern over the misinformation being expressed regarding Obamacare and some guy told me to keep my liberal attitudes to myself, I was probably violating rules or standards or something. Being liberal is a bad thing on SP?

Me toooooooooooo and a lot of people are buying it. Sorry, this is probably blasphemy on this board, but I was pretty po'd at Hilary the other day when she too spoke about "Congress" and "gridlock" and did not name names. I mean what does she have to lose by telling it like it really is? She'll never get the R's votes. Mamby Pamby - ugh.

Boy, am I getting fed up when the tv pundits talk about "grid lock on both sides". The problem is the tea baggers and the stupid republican leadership that got in bed with them and can't send them home.

Did you guys see this? White Supremacist in North Dakota was trying to buy up his town and turn it into a Neo-Nazi town. However, he didn't maintain his property and his dreams are going to s---t!

I agree about the zombies. It's amazing to me that the world keeps chugging along, with big advances I worry that the ultra conservative religious right could sneak into power. It would be living under the Taliban. They all believe the same stuff as far as I can see. Can you imagine our military power under Taliban lifestyle??

What I'm hoping about Obamacare: it will create a hugely competitive situation between health care providers. Take a look at this www.upworthy.com/his-first-4-sentenc

You are totally speaking for me TAIJIMAN. I figure once Obamacare goes into effect the TParty will love it as much as they adore their Social Security and Medicare. I've heard that the majority of them show up for Sarah Palin events in their paid for by Medicare wheel chairs. They're idiots and very hypocritical.

Don't despair. There are still plenty of smarties in this country - it's just that we don't spout off all the time.

Today is the first time I got really mad at stuff I read on SP. I was on another team and someone started a post about obamacare. I can't believe how the right wing has brainwashed everyone!!!!!!
I don't love Obama, In my estimation, he is a reagan repulican. But the Teabaggers and other facists (no, I won't dignify them with the lable "Conservative") are doing everything to sabotoge this president. I read a local letter to the editor which was disparaging a very conservative canditate for not being conservative enough ....my god, the candidate spoke favorably about the concept of compromise and that federal law supersedes state law and the writer of the letter said this "scares" her.

sometimes I get the feeling that I am in one of those zombie movies....the brainless dead are taking over this country.

In Au we do not have thanksgiving and I think it is such a good idea to take the time to think formally of what we should be saying thanks for as it does focus on self and positive aspect of your life.

On a serious note I do think believing and passing responsibility onto another can help. For myself I try to take responsibility for myself

I just had a funny this morning, someone was thanking god for helping him quit smoking. Apparently god loves him the most out of anyone. My thinking is that if you were favoured by god that much he'd have cured you from smoking completely.

Its early, I thought it was funny~

I have to agree with you --a lot of those traditions our outdated and just plain useless.

So much of our life is effected by religious traditions and before Jews / Christians / Muslims there were pagan, gentile, regional traditions that were adapted by / to these religions.

Our family tradition for Easter, Good Friday, was hot boiled eggs for breakfast, cold egg and cheese salad for evening meal. Fish or seafood for lunch as my husband came from a long line of fisher men and women both amateur and professional. After breakfast we decorated the cold boiled eggs. For Easter this year my daughter wanted to create an Easter tradition with her son.
