Jennie,

It is much like Photoshop. It has all of the bells and whistles like creating calendars and posters. I lack expeirence in photo editing, but I would assume that Photoshop is better at that, and that is an uninformed guess.

What I do like is the tagging feature. Now, if someone is looking for pictures of someone, I just go in a search their name. I'm no where near done though.

Matt

Celiaminer,

If your mom is still with you (I sure hope she is!) have her go over those photos with you and label them while she has memories of who everyone is. My mom didn't do that with my grandmother before she became sick and then became unable to answer "who's that" questions and now we wonder if we will ever learn who the people in the photos are. I'm trying to label photos as I get them so that when my daughter is older, she'll have no doubt who people/places are :)

I know what you mean about printing out digital photos...unfortunately, I haven't learned to only print a few, which is part of my "orgranizational problem" when it comes to photos (not just organizing the online ones, but the ones I've had printed out). I'm running out of room to keep them in boxes while the wait for me to work on them...I was trying to keep them by vacation trip in underbed boxes, but they are taking over my attic. I think that will be my next project...first I'll do my last vacation (Disney back in March) and then work my way either backwards, or begin with the day our daughter was brought home from Guatemala (before that, I think I have most of my photos in albums, which are like travel-books, with cut out brochures and other items from the trip (similar to a scrapbook i guess!)

I would also like to go through photos at my moms and somehow label them so I know who they are so I can explain to my daughter someday. My mom already has some "lost" people who were never identified and the older generation is slowly disappearing :(

I love your idea of putting a scrapbook together for your grandchildren...that's a nice family tree project, without being a traditional family tree :) Thanks for the idea :)

Even with digital, I still like to print out the favorite photos. I still think there's nothing quite like a few family members sitting down and going through a box of photos. I use those colored boxes with the dividers. I hope that in the next few years I can make a scrap book for each one of my grandchildren showing my family beginning with my grandparents, with a few words to capture the page.

I too have tons of pictures I would love to get organized. I guess getting them online would be easier organizing. Thanks for the good ideas on this. I have used picassa to get pictures from my son-in-law - not too handy yet with using it for tagging. I agree so many folders makes it so difficult to tell whre the duplicates are.

Wow, Matt, thanks for getting this thread started. I have boxes of prints going back to before I was born (Mom handed down a bunch of black and whites) and exactly one photo album organized from a vacation. I NEED this!

Oh boy - do I ever need to organize my photos.
I used to do scrapbooking, but since going digital I just store them all on my computer
and I'm more sure I could even start to organize that this point.

I also have hundreds of old old old family photos....some printed on tin that I would like
to scan into my computer to be able to save them.
Ahhh - some day I will get to this organization.

Hi Matt,
What does PhotoExplosion do besides allow you to label the photos? My dad just gave me Photo Shop,..is it like that program?
Good luck with your project..I have too many years of digital pics to organize and also put into the albums and scrapbooks I have.

Jennie

I just wanted to follow up...

I ended up buying Photo Explosion 4. I paid $26 for it and I have $10 reabate to send in. I have been working on the over 8000 digital pictures I have. The learning curve wasn't to bad...I did the "un-manly" thing and read the instructions...

The program does a whole lot more, but I am concentrating on getting the photos I do have downloaded tagged....it is a mind numbing job. I try to spend at least 20-30 minutes a day.

Have a great weekend

Matt

Thanx, Crystal, that sounds workable to me - I'm not very hi-tech either, so simple but with some basic features is right up my alley.

I was recently looking for a good photo organizing software for my Mom, who has only very basic pc skills. She takes hundreds of photos when she goes on vacation, and had about 6 vacations worth of photos.. and needed a good way to sort them. What I was looking for had to be easy to use, and free or at least low-cost, with some basic photo editing included. Most of the reviews kept coming down to two programs.. Picasa and WIndows Live Photo Gallery (a free download from Microsoft, different from the photo handler included on most Windows pcs) I downloaded and tried both.. and I while I think either would have been quite workable for her., in the end I went with the Live Photo Gallery. I felt the simple editing tools were a little more intuitive, and I liked the sort/view options. While the program lets you sort into various folders for organization, it ALSO offers a simultaneous view of all your photos by date taken. So.. if you have duplicates, you should be able to find them in the second view pretty easily.

Nothing that I know of, but I'm in the same boat you are: over the last couple of computers I've ended up with duplicates of quite a few things. So when you find a good app or whatever to sort thru them and remove duplicates, please post the info on here. Could come in very handy!

wow, that's epic! I use picassa for tagging and filing but couldn't tell you if it's easier/quicker than windows, I would say yes because windows is quite basic
Good luck!

Hello all,

I recently started scanning all of our print pictures the last couple of weeks. I've done about 500 and probably have another 1500 to do, and then I'm getting all of my mom's pictures that my sister has. At my speed, that will take me a year or so...

I bought a passport and moved all the pictures from the different computers and discs to it in one huge file. Now I want to start tagging them and organizing them in some fashion,,,I do not want to create multiple folders. I discovered that I several copies of the same picture due to my past multiple folder system.

So, my real question is are there any recommendations for some type of software program? I'm using the standard windows for tagging right now, and I know there has to be something much better out there. I do not want to store them on line.,

Thanks for reading,.

Matt
