When I feel overwhelmed, I allow myself to do 1 drawer, 1 cabinet, or just "1" something a day. I feel I've accomplished something and I don't feel things are out of control.

Don't you dare, for one second, surround yourself with people who are not aware of the greatness that you are.

ON filing papers, I have 4 file cabinets of clients from 27 years. What I ought to do is take a drawer and call all the numbers to see if anyone still lives there. If not, throw it out. ANd if they do still live there, I will have made contact!

My point with the closet "plan" was to "wear it or get rid of it" until everything is GONE out of the closet and then reorganize as I put the "good stuff" away.

(still daunting, I'm afraid, very afraid...)

Had a very busy weekend so haven't really tackled this project, just moved a few things so far. Man, life is busy! (a good problem)

TISHTOES good luck on your closet. I like your idea of putting stuff you like into your daughters closet, and that way you won't wear anything too many times in a row.

I like the idea of turning papers over and starting on the bottom which is probably the oldest. I have a HUGE stack of papers in an in-basket. Will try that tomorrow morning to sort through. Hopefully most of it can go now!

Now that my daughter cleaned out her room to go to grad school I am planning a closet experiment. I am going to transfer all my clothes to her closet as I wear them and keep going through MY closet and either wearting what's in it or giving it away. I have so much stuff that I never have time to clean the entire closet. I'm hoping this way I can keep the bedroom in view (I used to lay it all out on the bed, run out of time and throw it all back in the closet). When I have gone through it all I should have an empty closet with room to put the "good" things back into it an organized manner.

Okay, I can dream can't I? emoticon

I'll let ya know how this projects proceeds (or doesn't).

I've gotta do SOMETHING!

Minnie, I didn't mean to be judgmental. If you saw all of the paper around my house, and on my desk you would know how hard this is for me too. we need to find ways to encourage each other. emoticon

The key is immediate, (which I am not good at) and at least an annual clearing out of the files.

thanks, amanda. i have 4 filing cabinets. they contain work papers, health papers , financial papers and housekeeping papers. no room for another one. yes, i need a place to file them immediately so they don't pile up and i'm not busy lowering piles.

Don't let yourself get so overwhelmed, just do a little bit at a time. For the papers, I would recommend some type of filing cabinet system that you can sort them into and can find them easily.

Yes - great advice - I really like the one about putting the hangers on the rod backwards to see how frequently you actually wear the stuff........ I'm sure that would be a shock to me to see how few pieces of clothes I really wear....

I lost control of my stuff for a couple days and it went to chaos again - I'm having a hard time getting control again.
I know I can do it- I just need to plan a day to devote to it.

In the closet turn all of your hangers backwards, so that the hook faces the outside. As you wear an item turn the hanger back around. when you switch out clothes for the season, or after 6 months, you know which clothes you have worn and which you have not. Donate the ones that you haven't worn.

Paper is my worst area, but 90 % of it you don't need. You need to find a way to file it away,
Bills (I keep separate one for each type: electric, water, phone, income, giving, taxes, etc)
Medical receipts (I keep a separate one for each member of the family, and make new one each year)
Cars: We keep a separate folder on each car, and throw in all of the repair papers etc.
School papers: Keep a separate folder for each kid/ per school year

Those are just a few ideas from my corner. I get overwhelmed with paper also. One thing I heard from Suzie Orman is that if you have a pile of papers on your desk (or in your case in your drawer) take all the papers and turn them upside down because the oldest papers will be on the bottom. Then just start. You may want to just throw a lot of it away.

When the mail comes go through it IMMEDIATELY and throw out the junk mail. Get a shredder, and shred those papers that have info about you that you don't want anyone else to know.

Good luck.

You sound a lot like me, so careful - don't pull out more (from the closet or whatever) than you can put away again in the time you have. I get little cleaning "fits" sometimes and then end up with a pile of stuff that didn't belong where it WAS, but now doesn't have any home at all, and it then sits around for months attracting more clutter.

(I actually have whole boxes in my parents' garage full of stuff like that - where I've wanted to tidy up in a hurry, thrown a bunch of stuff I didn't know what to do with in a box, and then put it in the garage and forgotten about it.)

I suggest making sure you know EXACTLY what you're going to do with the stuff while you go through it. e.g. if you're planning to give clothes away, make sure you know HOW before you even pull the stuff out of the closet (is there a functioning clothing bin near you, or do you need to call one of the places who come and pick stuff up?).

Re paperwork: I use the "Getting Things Done" model of paperwork organisation. Basically you create "to do" lists of "next actions", and you deal with the paperwork on the basis of spending no more than two minutes on each, asking yourself if anything needs to be done about it (and what SPECIFICALLY that is). If so, you add the action to the list and if not, you either store the paperwork (in a file you've created - manilla folders are the easiest) or toss it.

The piece of advice I like best from this is don't be afraid to create new files, even if you only have one piece of paper to go in each of them. Also, to force yourself to define the very next action that needs to be done to move forward on whatever-it-is, so that the problems are defined rather than vague amorphous worries. (e.g. your next action probably isn't "do my taxes", it's probably "find my tax receipts". Or something like that.)

do it for 15 mn then stop until the next day or the afternoon. It's less daunting if you know you only have 15mn to clean/organize and you tend to do more

This is like the other person who posted this morning about how to get started.

Since you dread the closet so much, start slowly by pulling out say 10 pieces of clothing that you have not warn in at least six months ... next time you go into the closet do the same thing again. as you start to feel good about this, get brave and pull everything that hangs out of sort it out putting back only the stuff you can wear

one day then hit the other items in your closest.

you can even use cleaning out your closest as a reward to get a mani/pedi

Everybody tells me that they would love to knit, but they don't have time. I look at people's lives and I can see opportunity and time for knitting all over the place. The time spent riding the bus each day? That's a pair of socks over a month. Waiting in line? Mittens. Watching TV? Buckets of wasted time that could be an exquisite lace shawl. ~Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, At Knit's End: Meditations for Women Who Knit Too Much
