I have a fitbit - I think it's great.
It really helped me in the early days - it showed me just how little I actually did and gave me the incentive I needed to get of my backside by showing me how much more I needed to do.
I perhaps don't use it as much at the moment - I'm doing a lot of traveling and I tend to go for long walks or a run etc. When I do this - I use the GPS on my phone to track my routes with Endomondo.com or something like that.
I also have a Polar FT7 heart rate monitor thing - this I find VERY useful. It stops me from going completely crazy and really taxing my heart. It lets me see what I'm doing;)
So - use the fitbit. Let it show you your activity patterns and even guilt you into doing the 10k steps a day - you know it's what you should be doing anyways:)
