All consoles come with free 1-month trials preloaded on them for brand new accounts to unlock and use, so if you don’t already have an account (including a free one), you can set one up from scratch to activate a trial. Even if you’ve never had gold, the preloaded trials are only offered to new accounts, only as they are being created.
You have to go through the account setup from start to finish without exiting it even once to get it offered at the end. You’ll see some memberships and an option for “no thanks.” It’s when you get to the end and select “no thanks” that they’ll offer you the trial. You have to put in valid billing info to start it, but you can turn any automatic renewals off on the website so that you don’t get charged after the free trial.
Xbox also offers free Gold weekends every so often! The next one coming up for the US is August 18th for their G3 charity event!!
Amazon and Walmart.com are good places to find the 12 month cards on sale. Also, if there's more than one person in the household wanting a live account then the family plan is only $100 a year and up to 4 gold gamertags.

I love having live but i wait for the specials.. which pop up just as soon as the other special expires lol. i play with my brother, my brother in law.. the neighbors.. we all chat back and forth and compare games etc.. the extra bit gold gives you is worth it to me
For now my xbox live account is hile4...I will be getting my own account when we upgrade next month. I really dont have a set time that use Biggest Loser or the other exercise game(never used it), and now that I am going to be going back to classes for the semester, it will most likely be around 7:30 Eastern time.
My system came with a 3 month trial of the xbox live gold. I didn't think I would want to renew it when it was up. I didn't think I would want to play online. Then I found out about this team and the idea of making friends here that I could play with online interested me. I decided to try it with a random player. It was harder than playing against the computer player. I liked the challenge and am looking forward to getting to know and playing with people from here. I even ordered a headset so we can hear each other.
A basic Xbox live account is free. The nice thing for me about the paid, "gold" account is the cloud storage for game data, but you don't need it. Here is a comparison of the features available with the free account and the "gold" account: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/Join?xr=she llnav . I'm not sure what extra content you are seeing, but I haven't seen any extra content for this game tied to the gold account.

I have Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 now, and I see that there is also online content via an XBox Live account. Has anyone used this? What are your opinions of it?
I don't know if it is worth the extra expense of an XBox Live account, so I am a bit hesitant to go for it. YSFE and DC2 are probably the only 2 games I would be using the account for. Not sure if it is worth it. ??
