If your Level 1 cert is a big goal, I would wait on the defense class.

Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.

The class is more of an On Ramp rather than a true cert. You do receive a certificate of completion type thing but he makes it very clear this is not enough to be an instructor of the style.

That's cool. I'm glad that you liked it and got something out of it. Again my friend is a nice guy but arrogant at times if he thinks he knows more.

I'm thinking about it although I just registered for the Level 1 Certification in March so I may need to save more money before the Defense class.

Did you get a certification with the class?

We had 2 MMA fighters as well as someone who teaches combat skills to Marines. They did not think it was lame. He focuses a lot on mindset, pointing out that even experienced boxers, etc, are fighting in controlled situations/conditions. Not the same as reacting to a weirdo in the parking lot.

There are not a lot of secret techniques to this class. It really does focus on a few simple moves that you will remember when under great stress. My husband has a black belt in karate and felt the information was good. Again, the key was a lack of practice time. I have the ability to practice what we were shown outside of class but not many people can. For the $$ you spend, they would work on finding balance.

Cool - thanks for letting me know your thoughts. I have a buddy who went and said it was lame but he's an amature fighter (and a bit arrogant) so he may not have gone into the class in the "learning" mindset.

Glad you enjoyed it. I may look into it in the future.

I do have a very small martial arts background. It's certainly not necessary for the class. The idea is to utilize your natural flinch reflex.

The information in the class was great, however, there was not enough practice time. Hopefully the time management aspect of the class will be improved.

LMBTERRANA - let me know what you think. I'm interested in it. Do you have any previous martial arts training?

Today's WOD will be an all day affair. My box, Crossfit St. Pete, is hosting the Crossfit Defense cert. I'm very excited to take this class because my triathlon workouts often take me far from home. I'll let everyone know how it goes!
