Thank you everyone for these great ideas! I LOVE nut milk. I can't wait to try some variations!

I've made walnut, pecan, peanut, hazelnut and sunflower kernel milk with same method. Works fine.

BILBY4 - question about other types of nut milks...
Do you basically follow the same procedure/recipe for other nuts as you would for almonds? My son asked me the other day - "Mom - next time can we make pecan milk?" and I thought... why not? I would just hate to waste a cup of pecans if there's something special that needs to be done differently!

emoticon I've only been up an hour in this brand new year and already have a new "project"! Wanting to learn something new and eating more whole foods during my journey you all have provided me with exactly what I need!

Whether the hardware store will be open on New Year's Day is yet to be seen, but a paint strainer will be in my possession within the next couple of days.

I'm so glad I found this team!

I teach a class on making non-dairy milks and yoghurts and I can guarantee the paint strainers for a couple of dollars work just as well as the 'nut milk bags' sold on the internet or in specialty uber-hippy stores for up to $25.
all the best,
Alan

BILBY4 - Thanks! That's exactly the tip I was looking for. And I'll be right in the neighborhood of an ACE hardward store tomorrow morning so that works perfectly.

STARFISH1961... I've tried the coffee filters and it was a huge mess. I'd use a cheesecloth over coffee filters but am excited to try BILBY4's tip! Here's the link to the almond milk recipe that I like. I always add vanilla and sometimes a date (or a little pure maple syrup) if I'm looking for sweeter.

Easy. Go to a hardware store and ask for a paint strainer. One of those will do the job perfectly, for example the one gallon size made by Workforce (available at Home Depot, etc.). They have an elasticised top, so after you have blended your soaked nuts, just put it over the top of your blender like a shower cap. Carefully pour the liquid out, then grab the strainer and squeeze a bit to extract all the nut milk. Wash the strainer with your laundry and re-use.

I've never made nut milk, so I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that product. Hopefully someone here can help you.

I have made nut milks before, but I used cheese cloth to strain the pulp and it's cumbersome at best... almost making it not worth the effort.

Now, I know better... it IS worth the effort but time is a resource that I'm lacking most months. SO - in my "new year" mentality, I've done a little research on making nut milks (specifically almond milk) and found that there is such a thing as a Nut Milk Bag which is supposed to make my life easier.

#1: Has anyone here ever used one in making homemade nut milks? Does it help the process?
#2: Where might one find such a product (other than ordering online)? - I'd like to make some tomorrow.

Thanks!
