I didn't realize that you live in rural America. I'm so used to living 40 miles from Seattle, as the crow flies or the ferry runs, that I forget what it was like when I lived in the South. I remember having to drive across 2 counties to get to the nearest town. That was almost 40 years ago.

I checked my original link to the BREAST CANCER basket ($50, shipping incl) against The Fruit Co's other baskets...

and it looks like they are doing THIS basket specially (it's not in their list) -- it's neat to see their other baskets, though. After seeing their prices, I'm considering doing Costco's for one of my breast cancer surviving friends in another state. She'll love this basket! I don't know how much of the proceeds goes towards breastcancer.org but I know my one friend will love it! I'd consider my aunts who survived but I'm not sure or their dietary restrictions.

I'm Celiac and autoimmune, so I have to eat real food -- and as you say, while we raise our own freggies (I grew up on a working ranch with 3 acre veg patch but it's retired now), that's not year round.

Nobody has anything posh like green houses or hot houses in the Ozarks (I mean the real Ozarks where you drive across 3 counties to get to the nearest small town to work, like I do!).

I get if you have something right there for freggies and eat faux food, it's probably not the best.

It's fantastic for me! I joined when they first opened in the region and have never lapsed. I mean seriously, it probably saved me thousands in food.

I'm Vegan and they don't carry the items I buy to make homemade vegan sausages and mock meats. Fresh veggies only last so long so I buy local organic produce, grown in hot houses during the winter and spring.

I'm single and it pays for itself ($50 a year) even living a 120 mile trip away!

I eat meat, so you can get it in BULK, well, everything is bulk...

I LOVE getting 6 massive (not overripe nor underripe!) avocados for $3. Where I live, avocados of half that size sell for $2 each -- on sale!

I LOVE getting organic spring mix salad in a 2 gallon tub for $3. Where I live, 5 oz cost $3.50.

I LOVE getting a jar of digestive probiotics that lasts 3 months for $11. Usually a 1 month supply costs $18 at discount stores.

I could go on and on.

I don't work for them (couldn't living so far!) but I think it's a fallacy to believe they're expensive. I mean, maybe you can walk in there and find something expensive but everything I pick up is a FRACTION of what it costs elsewhere.

In case you're wondering about a single person sucking down all that food, I can easily eat 2 gallon of salad in a week. I eat it no less than 3C at a time (maybe 4) with protein on top for a meal. As to the avocados, okay, that's pressing it! :) I do have to make it a point to eat 1/2 of one a day. It's superior fat which helps my HDL, so I'm good with that. :)

Fruit, veg and meats are frozen.

Oh! I also get raw nuts there, so much cheaper than anyplace else (for me). And coffee. And...Seriously, I probably save more than the annual membership per trip -- then again, living so far away, I go there only once a month!

Costco is really pricey. There is one within 5 miles from my house but with only the 2 of us it doesn't make sense to shop there. The packaging is more for larger households.

It's my impression that this is online ordering and shipping only.

I live a 120 mile trip from Costco but I use it because it's hella good deals :)

Nice.
We don't have a Costco nearby, but if we did, it would make a nice "new mother" type of gift, too

Fruit baskets (purchased as a gift) are pricey and organic is pricier BUT if you're needing a shipped-type of gift, this is kinda neat IMO.
