Parsnips, Rutabagas, shallots, leeks, dragonfruit.

The parsnips & rutabagas ... i'm hooked. I diced them and placed them on a lightly greased baking sheet, baked them up with sweet potatoes, yams, red potatoes, yukon golds... no salt, sugar, etc. And damn, my 1/2 C serving goes way too quick. This is good even cold!

I'm definitely interested in finding more recipes for these, shallots & leeks. The recipe I had that used shallots & leeks was a huge let down but I bought more today and am raring to go.

The dragonfruit - was an absolute disaster. Yes, it has a similar look to a kiwi inside, but mine totally lacked any flavor & was slimy - reminded me of a very unripe banana. Everyone else I've talked to has enjoyed theirs... well, the outside was pretty... :\

Has anyone ever tried a cherimoya? They are really weird looking, like they have dinosaur scales. When they are ripe you just cut them in half and eat them with a spoon. They have large black seeds. They are custardy and sweet!

I've always hated asparagus, for no real reason, but recently tried it and actually enjoyed it. I also tried sweet potatoes without all the sugar and vanilla and actually "tasted" the whole potato for the first time.

I made a banana smoothie w/ingredients that I'd have never thought about using together but man it's good, filling too. Most of ingredients from my farmer's market.

3 T sunflower seeds (pulse finely then add)
juice form 2 oranges
1/2 banana (I used frozen)
1 t spirulina powder
1/2-1 t honey or agave nectar (to taste)
blend and drink

I just tried a Daikon Radish yesterday at our local co-op grocery store. I usually HATE radishes (because of their spiciness/bitterness) but this one was quite delicious, mild and very refreshing!

Hi everybody! I'm new to the group but glad to have found you. A new veggie to me is Chard. I love it raw or steamed. So delicious. I heard it described as spinach on steroids and found that to be soooo true. I love spinach and now chard is at the top of my list. emoticon

I've added an apple a day to my diet. We have several apple trees, mostly red delicious, which we enjoy in the late summer and fall, but they just don't keep over winter. So in the winter and spring I like to try different varieties from the store. This past week I bought a Japanese variety called Kiku. It is very sweet and tasty. This spring I am going to plant a Honeycrisp Apple tree.

I just discovered freeze dried fruits from Brothers-All-Natural! I picked them up at Costco and love them! They are nothing but the fruit in a freeze dried form. Let them sit in my mouth a little bit and the flavor really comes out. Did I say there is NOTHING added but just the freeze dried fruit? emoticon

I haven't tried any new fruit but I am eating fruit everyday. Banana, apple, clementine, orange, seasonal berries, mango, melon. I love all these.
I would like to try cactus pear or prickly pear , I saw it on food channel on chopped and I really liked the color of it. It's really bright red and juicy looking. Has anybody tried it ?

I, too, just made collard greens! It was my first time cooking them - I braised them with low sodium chicken broth, cayenne pepper, fresh cracked pepper, a few dashes of hot sauce, onions, garlic and a smoked ham shank. I haven't looked up the nutrition info yet- its probably on the high side for sodium - but a good choice in moderation.

I have been getting into collard greens lately as well. Tried cooking them once in college but didn't understand that they wouldn't cook like spinach and needed to be braised, so I didn't try them again for another 10 years or so. The other day I chopped a bunch and cooked them right along with brown rice in the pressure cooker, which was a great way to add more greens to our meal.

BABAKAPUSTA... did you pop the whole fruit into your mouth and eat the skin and all? The essential oils in the skin is sweet, the inside is very tart together they make a fun experience for your mouth. My neighbor has a tree so I don't have to buy them. I do have to be careful I don't eat more than three or four a day, they act as a laxative on me emoticon Try one again or check out some recipe's for jelly.

I ate kumquats. They were awful, very bitter. Maybe they weren't ripe. They were expensive and I don't think I will buy them again. I wouldn't be adverse to trying them again, but there are a lot of fruits I like and I don't see a need to eat them. They just seem like wee little oranges.

I was very disappointed. They were something I've always wanted to try.

- What new item have you tried out?
Parsnips and Kale

The Parsnips were alright.
I didn't 'hate them'; but, I'd rather eat a different vegetable.
If that makes any sense.
(I think I've had Parsnips before; but, it's been so long I can't remember. I probably didn't care for them much the last time I ate them and that's why it's been so long.)

I loved the Kale.

I hate anything spicey! I'll never eat raw broccoli again! Yuck!!

Jicama is a wonderful treat. It doesn't keep long in the frige so get a small one. My local co-op doesn't have organic so I'm waiting for Whole Foods to open to see if they might carry it.

I'm really wanting to put it in my salads.

I've had currants and liked them a lot.

I tried Goji berries and HATED them. This surprised me because I love every other kind of berry. Everything else I have tried I have liked. I have tried a lot of greens. Collards were a great find. Watercress is really cool. It has a peppery taste that was both surprising and great. I tried currants and those were also great. They are kind of like raisins. The next thing I plan to try is Celeriac (celery root). I also want to try Jicama.

I am new to this vegan thing. I love trying out new items. I recently tried Himalan berries. Tart, sweet, tangy, tasty. Not too many at once though....LOL
