I spend a lot of time envisioning my year and the changes I want to make. That is what I love about teaching, that each year you get to start again. It's another chance to do it better. I look for ideas on Pinterest. I plan my September bulletin board. My husband just made a banner for my bulletin board the other day. I get my beginning of the year letter & forms ready to send home the first week of school. At the end of August, I go in to set up my class. With the Common Core and the Danielson evaluation model going into effect in my district it will be a stressful year. We are also negotiating a new contract. My district is pretty good about providing us with all the supplies we need. I usually buy a few special items I want, like new bulletin board trim and maybe a special color bulletin board paper.

Abundant Blessings, Dee

I used to spend a lot of my own money on stuff for my class -- I don't do that any longer. First, I don't have the money (barely making ends meet under the best conditions any more) and also I think the school system is REQUIRED to provide certain things for me to do my job. They do a pretty good job between the faculty senate money (we get $200 per year) and the Special Ed office that gets other things occasionally as we need them.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

I wish my district was able to give me all of the supplies I need. They are good at trying to get us what we need when they can, but for the most part, I'm on my own. I have a nice supply of computer and lined paper, but I run out of spiral notebooks every year. My reputation as the teacher with notebooks is spreading, so my supply get wiped out pretty quickly.

I have two more weeks left of vacation. I plan to spend some time mapping out my first quarter, and then doing as much as I can to recharge and have some fun before I get started with my year.

I am fortunate that my school district supplies me adequately. We send home a list of needed school supplies along with our welcome letter in July. (I've got to take care of that on Monday) We are given a budget of $95 to spend on supplies for our classroom as well. I try very hard not to spend personal money on my classroom. Easier said than done.

On an emotional level, I try to relax and recharge. Gardening helps in that department as well as my annual cruise and lots of reading for pleasure.

Professionally, I read books and articles about how to improve my teaching. This coming year I'm piloting the Envisions Math Program so I've been looking over those materials. I also try to take professional development workshops and courses.

Every summer I reflect on what worked the previous year and what didn't. I try to come up with strategies to improve on the "what didn't" work category.

Those 8 weeks of summer vacation really fly by!

I'm going through all the supplies I've stockpiled and figuring out what I need to order for this year. I can't believe I only have 3 weeks left of this fantastic summer.

When I taught Kindergarten, I was ALWAYS buying materials because I wanted specific items. Then I taught 1st Grade last year, and I learned quickly, that when you have to teach 2 sections of a grade, you can't afford to buy everything for everyone, so you accept whatever the kids have and make gentle suggestions to parents on what to get. I still prefer Lakeshore's large gluesticks over everyone else's. They're a higher quality, they make things stick, and they last. I'm stockpiling copy paper. I've already bought 1 case, and will most likely get 2 more. My school only gives us 1 pack a month. Need more!! The Shop-Rite (grocery store) by me has a case of Hammermill for $24.90, which is a great price!!

Saw the ShopKo ad, but hoping they go down a bit more. I need to recheck my classroom to see how many I need of a certain color. Yes, I am watching ads, too. Not sure if that is good, though!! LOL

Found science notebooks at WalMart for 50 so bought enough for 2 classes. Was not allowed to buy much last spring so guess it is up to me. This will be some of my United Way donation since I am spending so much. Still looking for the 70 count notebooks to go on sale for 10 - 15. Then I will just pick up this and that. Going with a tech theme and have gotten things ready to print. Will have to cover them with a type of contact like paper as laminating is frowned upon. Just takes more time, but doable. Found out today I am going to a GOOGLE conference on Friday. Hope I understand what is going on. I am not up on google too well.

I haven't even thought about the fall since the 2 day collaboration our English team did during the beginning of June. But with the school year three weeks away, I have to start focusing on what the heck I'm doing to do. I will be spending two days this week collaborating with my new AP English colleague, so that will point me in the right direction. I would like to get back into my classroom soon. And now that back to school sales are starting, I can begin to stock up my supply closet.

Teaching summer school can be taxing when you know that others are not getting up for school and you are, especially when working with kids who aren't 100% thrilled with being in school during the summer. That can make for an exhausting day for sure.

The heat IS exhausting, but so is the fact that both you and the students are ready for a break and it may simply be a bit more challenging. Usually the kids in summer school have had a pretty challenging year themselves and are a bit worn out too.

Preparing for fall?

I guess I can only focus on the summer school that I am teaching right now, July 1-Aug 1.
Then, perhaps they may tell me what room and students I will have.
Then, hopefully, I can start to plan at least a little for fall...

And...
Why am I so wiped out when I get home from just 4 hours of school? Any thoughts? The heat?

I have to get healthy!

I missed it when I didn't have the option - our fitness center opened 6 years ago and it has been an incredible blessing - almost as though it was put there for ME.

Karen, the pool is indoors but there are not enough hours in the day for me to spend 3-8 of them in the pool working out when I must also teach. I plan to continue to do pool time, but will probably cut back to 1-2 hours a day. I also think I will be adding some other exercise for when the winter cold arrives and I don't REALLY want to go out with wet hair or freeze to death.

I switch up my pool exercises daily - sometimes I swim, most days I do a toning water aerobics class (but there are 4 or 5 different instructors who each does things differently - so little chance of too much repetition), other days mostly treading water, still others LOTS of strength training, and still others I walk/jog in the water. I use noodles, steps, the walls of the pool, dumbbells, paddles, and the kick boards. I also do leg exercises, arm exercises, pushups, pullups, crunches, squats, etc. Since I enjoy the water and stay in so long, I KNOW that I don't want to overdo any ONE exercise. This is my summer plan and it seems to be working for me.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

Nancy - that is SO emoticon that you have not needed your insulin for TWO WEEKS!!
emoticon Is the pool an outdoor pool or an indoor pool? Maybe you can find an indoor pool for once school starts?

Ang - I take it you want to stay in the same state you are currently in. Try going to your state DOE website and see which districts are expanding or are in need. You may have to teach in an inner city, but that has it's rewards too. Good luck!!

I am totally out of my normal routine but I have a specific plan to "get ready for fall". I am working out in the pool for many hours a day - I am working on gaining strength and health. I have been 2 weeks without insulin (not needing it) because of the long hard workouts. I have a ton more energy, and am gaining strength. My thought is while I will not be doing as much when school starts, this will help me keep it up in some way after school starts too - I plan to lose another 15 pounds by my birthday so I will be down 100 pounds. It should make doing my job a lot easier and less challenging.

Thankfully it has not affected my work performance as coordinator for our summer program. However, it has affected my weight lately. I am up 4 lbs in the last 3 weeks and I am convinced it has everything to do with my lack of a good amount of sleep.

I find I am a night owl some nights- but it is also affecting my summer school. Fortunately I scheduled my training sessions for really early- so this way I am trying to keep a schedule so when end of August/ Sept. I won't be wiped!

Karen....being a night owl this summer is starting to have a negative affect for me as I am the program coordinator for summer school. Most days I feel like I am dragging. I need to get more sleep!

Ang...good luck in your search! My first teaching position was at a residential school. While I enjoyed the job, I like the perks of being a public school teacher.

My way of preparing for fall is to find a new teaching job! I spent the last 2 years at a private school in Cleveland, OH, but I need family medical benefits and the administration does not offer them. So here I am converting my lessons to reflect Common Core, laminating, scanning, and searching. If anyone out there knows of a district in need of a teacher licensed for 4-9 Math, Reading and Social Studies, and 4-6 Science and ELA, please let me know.

Good Luck to all on the 2013-2014 school year!

Today's achievements are tomorrow's challenges. - me

Which means whatever you achieve today, try to beat it tomorrow!

Good Luck to all on your journey!

Funny how so many of us revert back to night owl status during summer vacation! Me too, so I do what many of you do and purposefully go to bed earlier and set the alarm to wake up. 5:00 am comes too soon, and I try to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.

The grading question: the best advice I can give you is to stay on top of it. Make it simple for you, get an EZ-Grader, predetermine what kind of quizzes or tests you're going to give, set aside a space in your gradebook for them, figure out if you will grade homework and what percentage of the overall grade it will be.

I like to work on my :Welcome Back to School" letter that I send to parents, as well as the school supply list. I also go in a week before we are supposed to to unpack, decorate, and clean.

We have an all new administration team and chief custodian coming to our school. September should be interesting!!

My mind remains in school mode as I am the coordinator for our summer program for our developmental kids. However, it is VERY different from what I do during the year, which is to teach children with severe autism. My official title is head teacher, but I am not teacher at all. I schedule, purchase, and oversee staff for the program. We only work 4 days a week and I will have 2 weeks off before we start school. That is when I will start to get my mind around school.

I cannot believe you got your letter already! My goodness, let the teachers take a mental break.

As for the grading situation, set aside 5-15 minutes each day (either before school, during prep, or after school) and focus on the grading. That way it won't get out of hand for you.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

I have worked on our new writing program - trying to get organized. Worked a bit on science. Cannot get into my room since our school is used for summer school. I used to go up a little during the summer and do a bit at a time. I am working on my classroom theme - Technology. Trying to find sayings and visuals of iPads, etc. I spend a LOT of time on Pinterest and surfing Blogs.

I always dread that first "School will be starting soon" letter. For some reason, they decided to send it earlier this year, so it arrived before the 4th of July. Nooooooo!!!! As much as I love my job, it's so nice to spend the summer relaxing and not be tied to any schedule or nights of grading. Unfortunately, by the time it does begin, my body adjusts to staying up late and sleeping in which makes it more difficult when the day comes. This year, I'll have to make big changes as I'm jumping up two grades after many many years. I'm trying to mentally prepare my mind for it by looking through the book. I'm looking for ways to avoid all the grading that comes with teaching. Any ideas?

Git er Done!

I did a lot of purging and shredding and such - I shredded about a ton of stuff - had five hugs garbage bags full of shredded paper.

I love my job, but nonetheless I prepare by getting as much r&r in as I can for as long as I can. Then I get my toes done.

I usually go back a week earlier than the required start back date. I don't worry too much about prepping and preparing. I try to relax as much as I can, while I still can. I have all school year to work hard!! :)

I hope to organize my files this summer too. I am also going to rearrange my room and will probably do that soon to see how it goes.

I think all the suggestions about getting back into a school-like routine are great. I do a lot of organizing of my computer files over the summer. The last couple of weeks before school starts I work on a syllabus for the coming year - fining tuning it fortunately, rather than starting from scratch.

I wish I could say that lately Pat. I seem to be going back to my old night owl ways and staying up later than normal during the weekends. I need to get back on track as I certainly feel it.

I try hard not to get TOO far off schedule and then a couple of weeks before school is due to start, I start heading to bed earlier and getting up earlier. I start thinking about my lesson plans and how I will deal with my class.

Definitely plan for it! I head back into my classroom about a week or two before we go back. Then I start making sure I get to bed at my usual time, which is really hard since I am a night owl. Getting up at my work time gives me time to exercise or Spark or whatever I can get done in the morning. I also make sure I get whatever plans I wanted to get done for my house or whatever done. I plan meals. I plan nights to exercise. I don't mind the spontaneous moments of life, but to get back on track for me it is about planning. Good luck!

I tried to maintain my normal routines! It helps that I keep busy with summer school or other activities.

Get healthy recipes together that are quick and easy to do on those school days when it is hard to think what to cook. Make sure you are familiar with the Nutrition tracker, so you know what your calorie range is. Think about how you will fit in your fitness time after school starts. Good job on thinking ahead!

After you have the summer off, how do you start preparing/practising to get back into a regular routine? I've been off work for a bit but know I shouldn't just vacation up to the day I go back. ;)

I take the greatest pride in my humility.
