I don't measure my exercise intensity.

In water aerobics class I just push that water as hard and fast as I can! emoticon

I measure the intensity of my exercise by what I do, how long I can do it for, and the level at which I do it. For cardio, when I am at the gym, I use a recumbant bike. When I first started I was at 20 minutes at a level 3. I'm now at 45 minutes, at a level 6. I'm constantly reassessing.

For my daily cardio: I estimate my intensity using the Talk Test or I just work until it feels hard/ I start to sweat. I've been doing HIIT several times a week and I live in a river valley so everywhere I walk I have to climb hills. emoticon

I could honestly say I have done PRE, HR, the talk test, and a few others as well. Mostly, I don't bother to measure mine. There is a PRE scale posted on the wall next to the pool so I do notice that more than the others. Since I take pool classes, I also notice when talking is too much effort - in fact usually the instructor comments on how everyone has suddenly stopped talking when we are in the middle of a strenuous part.

New Question

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

How do you measure your exercise intensity?

I wear a personal heart rate monitor

I use the monitors on cardio machines

I estimate it using the RPE scale (Rate of Perceived Exertion)

I estimate it using the Talk Test ( level where you can answer a question, but not comfortably carry on a conversation)

I check my pulse several times

I just work until it feels hard or I start sweating

Target Heart Rate (THR)

I don't measure my exercise intensity

At the dining table watching tv.... the kitchen/dining area looks into the TV area, so there is nothing safe about that place.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. –Steve Jobs

I'd like to say most of my meals are consumed at the table but I'm also all over the place...a few in the car, lunch always at work, a few in front of tv...dinner usually at the table.

I am all over the place when it comes to eating. Breakfast is generally in the car on the way to work (either dry cereal or a protein bar); lunch is shoveled down before I run to my next group (fortunately, I eat at a table for that one); dinner can be anywhere- table, couch, outside, outdoors....

Occasionally I will have a snack in my car- but I usually limit it to breakfast in the car.

I guess I would have to say other - I eat in a variety of places and often break the rule about focusing on the food - I often compute or work while eating. I also eat breakfast in bed some days (hey when you are brought your breakfast in bed and already cooked - it would be a slap to not eat it). I KNOW the right answer is supposed to be at the dining room table with family or friends - but it is NOT "MY" reality.

Most of my meals (more than 90%) are at a dining room table. I rarely eat in the car now--except for a beverage. I'm trying to be more mindful.

The most honest answer until recently would have been other, walking round eating, sitting up in bed eating etc. since then I've been eating breakfast usually standing in kitchen, two school breaks sitting in staff room, afternoon snack and dinner at the table. At weekends most eating is at the table. It's better to be conscious one is actually fuelling up, otherwise the random grazing could creep back in. I'm managing fairly well, especially last night resisting "tidying up" kids leftovers.

More than 50% of the meals I consume are consumed at the dining room table.. sometimes with the newspaper at hand and sometimes with TV news on.... :) 5 meals a week are consumed at the dining table in our social studies work room with my colleagues.... that counts as sit down eating too! I don't eat in the car except on very rare travel occasions and never at the computer.

Answer to last question - true
Experts state: Allergy symptoms are often minimal on wet, cloudy or windless days because pollen does not circulate well under those conditions. Hot, dry and windy weather, however, increases the amount of pollen and mold in the air, resulting in more severe allergy symptoms.

I'd go with true.. this is our windiest and driest time of the year in SE Arizona and ALL the allergy sufferers are truly suffering and the TV news runs a nightly pollen meter, which is not something we see in the rest of the year. I'm blessed not to have much issue of it, but we use more boxes of kleenex in my classroom in April than any other month!

Many things! At age 25 I had high blood pressure and had trouble sitting criss-cross on the floor with my students. I hated what I saw in the mirror and I made the life-changing decision to get healthy once and for all.

I've never had more energy, flexibility, or endurance than I have now!

These are all great reasons to lose weight. I am also tired of being the fat teacher in my very sporty school, tired of feeling tired all the time, of the sore hips and knees, of having horrible clothes that are in fact too small because I couldn't deal with buying the next size up. Not being able to comfortably reach round to scrub my back, or worse :-( emoticon There's vanity too, but mostly it's for health and slower ageing. The clothes issue I've decided to solved with charity shop finds for now and I can buy new when I get closer to goal.

I had two life changing experiences that my weight caused some issues. My daughter got injured and I couldn't go on the life flight with her because I was too big, and my grandma died and I had to take a bus to see her before she passed on, and got stuck.

Me too, to a lot of the above!

I had a grandchild on the way.. I was tired of being in pain, of having to limit what I could do, of being "the fat one"..... of ugly clothes, of being slower than everyone else, of worrying about my health. Retirement is approaching and I want to enjoy it.

And oh, does it feel good! Almost 80 pounds gone so far, with maybe 40 more to go. Life is good.

Ditto many others: Tired of feeling old before my time, tired of hurting, tired of being tired, tired of lagging behind the other "younger" teachers more and more every year. Tired of not fitting into my clothes, tired of not looking at myself in a mirror below the waist.

Blessings: LOVING having more energy, throwing away baggy shirts and pants, having hope for the future, being able to tell people I'm training for a 5k, compliments, running up the stairs at school without pain ... etc., etc., etc.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Everything but playing a sport. I would inwardly cringe when seeing my reflection in a mirror or window when walking by. Keep thinking I am a time bomb ticking away and that sooner or later my luck will run out and I'll end end up with Type 2 Diabetes or worse.

When God closes a door somewhere he opens a window.

Other- I have just reached a point where I am tired of being overweight. I'm tired of having no energy. I'm tired of my feet and knees hurting. I'm tired of not being able to wear cute clothes...you get the idea. I am ready to get healthy!

Wow NanciPatti that sounds like you really found what works for you. Glad to hear you are feeling so much better. I suffer from knee pain as well and have to schedule replacement, but just keep pushing. emoticon emoticon

Other - I kept seeing references to Spark People in Woman's Day and Family Circle magazines. I was always very sceptical of the articles, and then one day, I decided to actually go online to see what Sparkpeople was all about. So, I guess it was a change in my "mind set" first. I realized that it was very possible for me to not only lose weight, but become healthier, fitter, and to keep the weight off for good.

Other - I was in almost constant pain with my knees and was having trouble breathing. I was barely able to do my job and was in a LOT of pain. I also was beginning to worry that even though I was keeping my blood sugars in a safe range over time, it was taking more and more work to do so. I was growing OLD - like not just old but REALLY REALLY OLD and I didn't like it one little bit. I am able to do more and with less pain and am only about 1/3 of the way to by goals - suspect I am at least 10 years younger than I was at this time last year.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

I saw some pictures of myself while visiting my daughter and decided I needed to get active again. Hopefully I can lose it for my son's wedding which is a big motivator.

What made you decide to lose weight for good this time?

A friend or family member expressed their concern for my health

I saw myself in the mirror/in a picture one day and it just hit me

My doctor advised me to lose weight for my health

I had an event I wanted to lose weight for

Losing weight made it easier for a sport I played

All of the above! I've been working hard at swapping healthy choices into my life to crowd out my not-so-healthy choices. LOL

Definitely all of the above. To me - you aren't going to lose the weight and change your life by just making one small switch. It's all the little switches put together that change things in the long run.

I found a new wonderful chip to snack on. It is by Blue Diamond Almonds, they are baked nut chips. I fell in love with them. Just the right amount of crunch and taste so yummy!

I will do switches, but I also am working on portions more so than switching out foods.

There are no forbidden foods in my world but swaps and switches make sense in that they often allow me to enjoy more variety than I would otherwise eat because they are either lower in calories or healthier in general.

I'd agree that all the switches make sense.. but there are no totally forbidden foods in my world.. just a constant equation... "Does it help me be healthier? Is the taste worth the result?" Sometimes, of course I don't answer wisely, but my proportion of wise answers is much better than it used to be! emoticon

All of the above.

I've actually switched to old fashioned oats now and am working up towards steel cut.
Have made the switched to unbuttered popcorn. Haven't bought potato chips in months (yeah me!)
Love dark chocolate - milk chocolate tastes whimpy now lol.

All of the above, but the unbuttered popcorn and the small piece of chocolate sound best to me. I'm not much for oats.

Eat this, not that.
Which of the following food switches makes the most sense for health and weight loss?

Steel-cut oats instead of instant oats with sugar

Unbuttered popcorn instead of potato chips

A small piece of dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate candy bar

All of the above
