So sorry your day was so stressful! Can you go walking in a mall or somewhere? How about the school gym after school? You will have to settle for winter break I'm afraid - when does yours start?

Another stressful week.
Tonight report card night and Science night.
Did not get home until 7:30p.

Last night teacher meeting the student are not doing well in reading. What to do???
I feel stressed out and I am turning to food. I want to go walking but it is just tooo dark outside. I know these are just excuses but I hate this time of year. STRESSSSS!!!! When is summer vacation???

Becky - I never thought of buying cheap and reselling it; but I guess that would be a reason. If you are on a very tight budget, that could be helpful as well.

Kim - I like on-line shopping as well for most things. There are some things, like pillows for example, I need to feel first! LOL

I hate shopping. As I looked at the ads on Black Friday I thought what do I need so bad that I would give up sleep and rest for.
$100 off a TV. No way the old one I have is just fine. I think alot of those people buy the stuff cheap then resale it???

It seems overwhelming when I start, but I usually get it all done in a couple of days. This year will be lighter because my son is going on a band trip to Colorado in April and a lot of our money has been going to pay for that. I hate crowds and I always end up shopping during Christmas break anyway whether I'm "done" or not, so I just don't do the Thanksgiving sales.

I didn't go out either. I haven't even started thinking, much less doing! I heard it wasn't too bad at my area WalMart, though,

We were on the road for "Black Friday" so no extra shopping done. Think I'm pretty much done anyway. Anyone brave the crowds?

We're doing ours today. I cooked a bunch of stuff and am going to clean this morning. We're not having it until 6:00. The scale is definitely up for me this week, but I've been exercising at least. We have another one tomorrow. I'm going to try the things I like but not go crazy.

Had a great day yesterday. Hope everyone had a healthy and happy day and that the choices you all made were worth the prices paid - my son had indigestion but otherwise we both ate pretty well.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

I try to avoid crowds so I will not be doing any Black Friday sales. We do need to do a Costco run and I am hoping more people go to the malls than Costco.

I'll be visiting in-laws in Charleston, SC this year. My s-i-l and I take turns hosting. I have a busy week scheduled this week and next. Hoping things calm down after the holidays. I have gotten walks in but not the gym. How is your fitness plan going?

In our world, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving so much as HUNTING SEASON - we get a WHOLE week off that week. Me, I celebrate Thanksgiving but am not traveling - where I would travel is to New Jersey and I don't think this is the best time to be a house guest when they are dealing with the ravages of Sandy.

They are VERY schedule driven and change can be REALLY upsetting to them. Whether they can tell time or not, they KNOW when lunch time is, when it is time to go home, to get out of bed, etc. They will certainly be agitated because of it. Also, since time changes affect the adults around them, they pick up on that energy and it disturbs them even more. We will survive but this week we have Election Day off and an early dismissal on Friday and then another day off on Monday. So the whole schedule disruption will be INTERESTING.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

Nancy, what an incredible story about your son. I so love the Temple Grandin story, and I thought that Claire Danes did a wonderful job portraying her. I've had some students on the spectrum in the past, and two this year. I teach 6th gr earth science and math so I work with all of our 6th graders, and my science class is the one class all kids are mainstreamed into. It sounds like you and your son have had wonderful support from other family members. I'm sorry to hear about your son, Mike. Boy, are you ever cut out to work with your kids! You are one strong woman!
Never apologize for "rambling" or venting. It helps keep us sane!

Tanya, I second that idea. I would love to see your video of the camping trip. My kids are challenging but I LOVE them. This year is MUCH less violent than some years have been. Only had one incident so far where a student harmed anyone else THIS year. My son is quick to tell people that I do this work and am GOOD at it because I raised HIM. He is also on the autism spectrum and was a VERY challenging child and young adult. At 14 he was placed in a facility to help get HIS anger under control. He is NOTHING like he used to be and I attribute that to several factors besides age. First my second husband was a GREAT role model for him and also treated him with great respect and EXPECTED it in return. Second, my son Mike lived with him for 10 years before his death and was able to gently remind and teach him how to behave in ways that I could NOT because I was his MOTHER and therefore NOT really a reliable source (you know that sometimes in adolescent and young adult lives, parents don't know ANYTHING). The third reason was when I gave him Temple Grandin's books - she is an incredible source for what it is like to BE a person on the autism spectrum and how the world looked, felt, and sounded from a DIFFERENT perspective. When he first read her story, he came to me with tears in his eyes and said, MOM, THAT IS ME. He said that for the first time he realized that he was NOT psychotic, was NOT crazy, and was NOT retarded. It freed him to just BE himself and to find ways to better interact in a world that is sometimes very challenging to him. He was not diagnosed as a child because he was verbal and because they only diagnosed kids who were very extreme on the spectrum as autistic. He had lots of diagnoses BUT they were NOT correct and treatments sorta, sometimes, kinda, almost worked but really did NOT work well.

Sorry for rambling on.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

Nancy, it sounds like a challenging position and you must have a heart of gold and the love for these kids that they need most in their daily lives. I send big hugs to you. Have a peaceful weekend.
I need this weekend just to get ready for 6th grade camp next week. We take the kids to the mountains for an annual outdoor education (CA state standards) program. It's a busy week for the students and teachers, and by Friday I know I am really missing home life. I just installed Skype on my iPad and on my husband's so we can chat during the week. This will be my 16th time going to camp! Three of the teachers on my team that also go are just miserable over it so I try my darndest to be up and happy and enthusiastic and get the kids excited for the week. I don't think it's good PR to be so negative about it - just in case the parents or kids hear you. Sorry for the vent. This year I am going to climb the 50 rock wall for the first time. I told myself last February when I joined SP that if I lost 30 lbs I would climb the wall. Wahoo. I have such a fear of heights, but I want to demonstrate to my students that anything is possible. I'm also going to make short videos each day to post on our webpage so that the parents can see all the fun their children are having. This will keep me out of the Debbie Downers' way during the day.
Thank you for letting me chat/ramble!

My students are in middle school, but I have worked with kids as young as 5 and as old as adults. They are often kids on the autism spectrum, often nonverbal and many have been abused and/or abandoned or removed from very disfunctional families.

Oh yes, I forgot to add that any time we are forced to deal with such extreme behaviors, it is VERY DRAINING and upsets not only the student involved but also staff and even any of the other students who witness it.

Today we went beyond that as a student ran out of the building and down the hill to the high school - we had to have the sheriff's deputy pick her up and return her to the school. Talk about draining and stressful - you can imagine that one.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

It is a restraint move that is used as a LAST RESORT when a student has become aggressive (danger to others), self abusive (injuring self), in danger, or causing severe property damage. I have used them more than occasionally. Last year it was nearly a daily occurance with several students who would explode dangerously and do small things like throw bookcases full of books at me, bite, kick, hit, spit in my face, and cuss me. . . oh and sometimes run out of the building and into the driveway heading for the highway.

CPI means Crisi Intervention Prevention and teaches a LOT more than the restraint part and can be used with typical as well as special needs populations BUT is more commonly needed when dealing with students who have behavior issues and sensory issues.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

CUTIEMISSNISS - I understand. This is my first year as a retired teacher and the adjustment has been slow. Luckily I found a volunteer job in the children's section of the library so I still get to help with the children. I have missed them the most.

I joined this group because I am a teacher. Even without a classroom this year, I feel I am still a teacher. I used the sadness I felt yesterday caused by the fact it was the first year in many years that I did not have Halloween activities planned, or a party for a classroom. I need to work on me so come next school year, when I WILL have a classroom to plan for, I will be at my best and feel my best for myself! emoticon

I like the time off but the kids backslide when they are off. We have next Friday off for conference prep. Then we have the next Thurs./Fri. off for working conferences at night. Then Thanksgiving. November is a crazy month.
I met with my special ed. director after school just to chat about kids. The meeting went very well. It's always nice to hear people say nice things about how you do your job.

Poor darlings - even adults have an adjustment period.

This is especially true of the "typical" kids but the kids with special needs - especially autism spectrum disorders are absolutely HORRIBLE when having to deal with changes like this. AND on top of it all, the clocks get turned BACK this weekend so it adds another whole layer of confusion on them. Lunch will not be NORMAL TIME at least not to their tummies and sleep will be off and . . . . . . and . . . . and...

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

I think it confuses their brain too - they get to sleeping in and being entertained and then they have to re-adjust to school. Good point!

Some weeks and even some months are longer than normal. This week has been VERY long - even with 2 days off and a 2-hour delay today. Next two weeks we have a day off also, then comes Thanksgiving and then comes Christmas. It is a lot of down time but confuses the kids.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.
