I am not very happy to hear this because I was hoping to move to N.Carolina in a few years.

Anyone have any input on the education system there? I haven't done enough research to know much of anything.

Being from Texas, things here are spun as tight as they can get with standards and high stakes testing, yet students still struggle to learn.

Any input or feedback will be welcomed!

OMG...that sucks! And you do seem so very calm about it. Goodness...as a divorced parent I need every penny I can get!!! Wow. I know at our district in Texas, they are not replacing teachers that are leaving, but they have not said anything about pay cuts or others losing jobs. Scary stuff!

Moving forward one baby step at a time.

There is an NCEA meeting in Raleigh on May 6 where the teachers will then proceed to meet with the legislature face-to-face. Some teachers are taking off that day and car pooling together..

Is there anything that can be done about this? I'm only a 2nd year teacher, but everyone around me is accepting the pay cut too easily. That just seems to let the big guys know that we'll just roll over next time they decide to make more cuts. There are so many bail outs and incentives going to other industries, how can cutting teacher salries be justified, especially in this school year? We only have one more check coming to us, so it will all be deducted at once. And the "flexible furlough" seems like a bunch of BS to me. If this saves jobs, great, but our county is going to be cutting several positions for next year, too. I just feel like we should speak out. emoticon

I'm a North Carolina teacher. As much as I hate the idea of losing part of my salary, I like that option better than the one that would cause some of our younger teachers with less time in the system to lose their job because of a reduction in force.

I am in a district that hasn't had a contract for 3 years. It's not looking good for the near future either.

That's crummy. As your neighbor here in NN, VA that's scary news. As far as I know, we are not getting any step raise but no pay cut. There are no jobs in my area. I know of several people coming out of college this semester and there is absolutely nothing available for them. So even with your pay cut, I could see some of these kids traveling to NC just to get a job.

Hopefully this economy will right itself soon. Good luck to you. Hang in there!

The pay cut is for the rest of the fiscal year so I'm not sure what next school year will bring as far as salary is concerned. Usually we get a slight pay raise, but I'm pretty sure that won't happen for the 2009-2010 year. Check the NC teacher salary schedule that is posted on DPI's website. Your salary depends on how many years you've been teaching as well as your education level (Bachelor degree, Masters degree, etc.)

With that pay cut, how much will a new teacher (recently graduated) get paid to teach in NC? I am set, but I know several people on the forum are looking for teaching positions. I lived in SC for a year while my husband was stationed at Parris Island in Beaufort, SC. What a pretty place to live!

We just received news today from the governor of NC that we will be taking a 1/2% pay cut for the rest of the fiscal year. As much as NC needs teachers I can't believe that the state decides to take the money away from the teachers. It's ironic considering that our principals our recruiting teachers from other states and even from Canada because we are in such a shortage. It makes absolutely no sense. The only thing I can say is that I'm grateful to have a job with the way the economy is today. emoticon
