I just wanted to tell yall about my elementary school running club. I started it in the fall of 2007 not knowing what to expect. Since that time my membership has grown between 80-90 students from 2nd-5th grade. We meet once a week and the kids run laps around our "track" and get their hands marked with every lap with washable marker. At the end of the meeting, they write down their lap count and I enter everything into a spreadsheet.
We have already surpassed our mileage count for last year and we still have 6 weeks left in school!
Many of my students are now competing in local races with a lot of success. This year we have had 25+ kids show up at 3 races which was great. What is crazy is that my 2nd and 3rd graders are into it the most with several of them RUNNING 2,3, and 4 mile races. The kids are loving it, the parents are loving it (except when it's 29 degrees on race day and they shiver while cheering their kids on), and I am getting my students hooked on a physical activity that they can do for the rest of their lives. After every race I create posters with race pictures that I tape up in the gym. The kids loving seeing pictures of themselves and it encourages others to give racing a chance. I have two 3rd grade girls that will hopefully break 100 total miles for the year before school is up. They put in 3-4 miles every Thursday and never miss a race.
We meet only on Thursday's from 3-3:45 b/c our school have after school tutoring on Monday-Wednesday and no one would want to stay on a Friday! On Friday, my students get a free day in my gym and many of them choose to run laps outside instead of playing with hoops, ropes, basketballs, footballs, etc. Never though that would happen!
If you are interested in starting a club message me. I am the PE teacher at my school but any teacher who really wanted to could make it happen. I can email you samples of my letter I send home, my spreadsheet for tracking mileage, and attendance sheets that the kids use to write down their laps.
