I think all teaching is challenging. Teaching such a large range all at once is not without it's difficulties to be sure, but it is also very rewarding, both for me and the students.

It enables me to give struggling students the gift of time without any stigma attached, challenge those who are gifted, and teach them all about role models, kindness to others and respectfulness. Sometimes my classroom is more like a large family with multiple aged siblings...with the attendant squabbles. emoticon

Mostly it's emoticon between them.

I'm back! I was here back in the summer and I faded out. I am back and weighing more....UGH! I need to seriously do something to change my bad habits, but it seems that sugar is my best friend. emoticon

Wow you teach 3rd - 6th, that has to be challenging. It is so cool that you go to China to teach English, I have a young friend and coworker who went to Japan for 2 years to teach English, he loves it. And he has commented on how respectful the students are. He keeps us updated on his experiences and it is so interesting!

I'm 50 years old and have been teaching almost 20 years. I teach in an independent Elementary School in the Boston area. I team teach a mixed age group class or 3rd- 6th grade students. I teach LA and Soc. Studies, my colleague teaches math and Science... of course we are both able to cover each other... it goes without saying that elementary school teachers have to be able to teach it all.

I spend my summers teaching English in China... a truly humbling experience, 60 students to a class, total respect for the teacher, and in addition Chinese students work so hard, the 12 year olds I teach there are almost fluent.

A sobering thought is that there are more students learning English in China than there are Native English speakers.

I am 51 years old and teach middle school social studies in rural Iowa. I taught 25 years in fifth grade and then graduated to middle school. All total 29 years so far. I have three children, a 24 year old daughter and two 20 years old, boy and girl. My husband and I have been married for 28 years. My summer job consists of working at a book store, which I love! I actually have time to read during the summer. I also have more time to keep up with sparkpeople during the summer, but with the stress of school, I'm slacking!!

I am 55 years old, and teach 4th grade in Florida. I have been teaching for 28 years- 2nd grade in California and 3rd grade in Oklahoma. This is my 5th year in Florida.

I have been divorced for almost 3 years after 28 years of marriage. My adult son lives at home while he's going to college, and this has been a blessing since my divorce.

I love to read (I think that's a rule for teachers!) and love going to the beach. I love Spark, but I don't have as much time to check in here since school started.

Ellen, that is so funny, I have a 22 and 24 year old at home, and the 26 year old is home temporarily (her fiance is finishing law school and they are saving money).

I want to thank you all for making me feel so welcome and for your warm responses. I am so glad I decided to try and lead this team!

Hi All,

I'm 43 and have two kids -- a daughter 13, and a son 10. I'm an instructinal designer, and general ed tech person at a local college. I also work closely with our Education faculty.

I just started Spark a few weeks ago, and am hoping to see some weight go very soon! I just bought a new scale (digital), and it seems to be much frienlier than my old one -- it says I lost 2 pounds! YIPPY.

Best wishes,
K

Looks like we all like Reading, I just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns, I loved it. Any other favorite books? I live in Illinois so we have the Rebecca Caudell books the kids get to vote on for the State Library. I always read those every year. So far my favorite this year is Princes Academy, can't remember the author off hand but it was a great book. I know there are reading teams but we could have a thread for posting good books, recommendations or hated books. Whatever. Would anyone want to do that?

I didn't know we had a new leader. It's a HUGE job. There are so many new members joining every day. Good luck!

I'm a K-6 special ed resource teacher at an urban school in Phoenix. We have high ELL and free/reduced lunch numbers. I've been there for all 13 years of my teaching career.

I'm single and have no kids.

I'm working on my last 10 lbs or so but am happy with the weight I've lost so far. I've never been at this weight before nor have I fit into size 10s so I'm good. I'd just like to get further into the healthy weight range so I don't have to worry about the weight fluctuations so much. I do lots of treadmill with incline for my exercise.

We can do this!

Peace,
Kristi

Hi team, I know having a new leader will be a little bit of an adjustment for all of us but in order to help me could you all post a brief bio here so I can start to know a little about who I am talking to? Maybe your position, grade levels, subjects, hobbies whatever you feel might help me remember who you are. I have a mind like a sieve, what goes in is bound to come out the other side so I try to connect things with people so I can remember something about them.
