But only AFTER they're 5 years old, BMI.

I was told by my know-it-all DIL (she is one of your "born of substandard wits") that kids don't get sarcasm under the age of 5.

Apparently this was her mission. When my grandson asked me if I was being sarcastic at about the age of 6 or 7, I knew he'd been talking to his mother. What 7yo even knows the word "sarcastic"?

Sarcasm requires higher intelligence, and creativity. But I do think that even those born of substandard wit can excel at the fine art of sarcasm with enough practice and experience. So go ahead, be sarcastic to all the half-wits in your life, they'll thank for it, once they finally get it.

For sarcasm some times just happens. Once while taking a class in algebra after working the night shift, I let out with. Big yawn in the middle of class. Teach asked was he keeping me awake. With no thought on the matter I replied "just barely". He didn't mess with me any more.

The whole thing with sarcasm is being able to come up with a response quickly that 1. goes with the topic at hand 2. is witty and intelligent (at least in my opinion). There are only a few people that have ever gotten me really good in the work place. For example.

Me: hey joe, you'd be so proud of me!
Joe: Oh yeah!? What's you do?
Me: I went down to the gym last night!
Joe: Oh? Did you wave at all the people exercising?
Me: *speechless*

Now this may sound mean, but it wasn't. He felt bad afterward and I told him not to. He got me good and I thought it was funny. It came out of no where! I had no retort, which doesn't happen often.

So I think there is a lot of truth to the article he posted! :)

We are our own worst critics, our biggest enemies. Let's show ourselves that we can do anything, even when we are at our lowest point.

Oooh! I like your registered trademark symbols, Timothy.

I need to start using them because I am always inventing words, and it sure wouldn't hurt my pocketbook to have those royalty checks rolling in.

I am thinking that the "study" got it bass-ackwards. It's not hat sarcasm makes you smarter and more creative. Being smarter and more creative opens the door for one to be a better sarcaster. (My word, sarcaster).

Saecasm is not a way of coping it is a way of being. I am sarcastic, therefore I am.

Does sarcasm actually make you smarter and more creative or are the people who are naturally above average in intelligence and creativity become sarcastic as a coping mechanism?

I disagree, you have to be smart first in order to process sarcasm, and once you do it being sarcastic becomes easier and easier.

emoticon This is so appropriate right now, there is a guy at work whom I'm always trading barbs with..... we kinda keep tally and I got him good a few days ago and of course the other employees always then kid him or I when we do this....... I always tell him what am I the only one you can zing like this and "get away" with it?!? His response NO ONE ELSE IS SMART ENOUGH TO FIGURE IT OUT!!!

So it MUST be true! emoticon

PS very cool web site..... and a good article.

I was reading Listverse the other day. The list was "10 Odd Scientific Facts About Emotions"
listverse.com/2013/07/23/10-odd-scie
nt
ific-facts-about-emotions/

#8 on the list confirmed what I always knew: Sarcasm Makes You Smarter, More Creative.

"If your response to the title of this entry was yeah, right then congratulations. It turns out that the mental gymnastics required to successfully process sarcasm are of the very type that extremely smart and creative people must employ on a regular basis and that regular exposure to it can increase creativity and problem solving."

So is this news?

Yeah, right!
