It's been good to revisit this page. I just copied all the verses relating to weight loss here and put them all together for easy reference, sometimes underlining pertinent sections. It's been a help to me since yesterday I made a dessert for the family -- and helped myself to it multiple times. I hate the thought of never keeping anything sweet in the house again, yet wondering if that's what I needed to do. The verses below about eating what is "sufficient' helped as well as many others.

In something I read this morning in Warren Wiersbe's With the Word, he said that saying we're sorry for sin is not the same thing as confessing and forsaking sin. Stopping just with regret is stopping short. It brought to mind Proverbs 28:13: "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." Sometimes it's easy to "cover" our bad eating habits (though with overeating, it does show up on our bodies after a time).

1 Samuel 17: 37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee... 47And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands. 48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

Hi Ladies, I searched for diet bible verses on google and your message board popped up. All of your posts have inspired me to join spark people. I just wanted to add that I wrote all the Bible verses on neon green index cards and tapped them around my kitchen (pantry door, microwave door, above the sink where I do dishes, and over the stove) so that every time I go to grab something I can read a verse and re-evaluate whether or not the food choice is appropriate. Thanks for your inspiration! Keep up the good work!

Psalm 37 v 3
Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

Might be loosely interpreted to mean Know that God Himself wants you to exercise and eat right.

Whatever is true . . . noble . . .right . . . pure . . . lovely . . . admirable . . . excellent . . . praiseworthy—think about such things.

A verse I came across on a blog at the beginning of my weight loss journey is 1 Corinthians 6:12..."Everything is permissible for me-but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me-but I will not be mastered by anything." Of course this could apply to any area in our lives but I think of this verse a lot when I'm reaching for that extra helping or that" not so good for my body" treat. Do I really need it? Who really is my master? How am I treating my body?

Col. 1:9-17 ¶ For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;
¶ Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

1 Peter 1:13-16
Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. (NIV)

Okay, so Paul was talking not about diet and exercise wasting us away, but about aging and death. Still, I find this verse a good reminder that as we grow physically healthy on the outside, we cannot forget to grow spiritually healthy on the inside.

Here are some verses for when we do fall:

"For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief" (Proverbs 24:16).

The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down (Psalm 145:14).

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me (Micah 7:8).

The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand (Psalm 37:23-24).

Yeah -- but it usually the excess food that leads to the excess weight. emoticon

Seriously, the excess can apply to both -- or anything we have or do in excess, as opposed to the moderation and self-control taught in other places in the NT.

Dear BARBARAH06 When I read the verse you submitted I didn't think of excess weight, I immediately thought of excess FOOD on that clean platter!!! Excess is what got us into this mess. I have always been comforted by sweets. I won't tell anyone I'll never eat another cookie or burger but I will cut way back so that when I reach my goal weight I won't have to worry about it so much.
We will get there. emoticon
P.S. I've made my goal a little lower to allow for that emoticon

I agree, yet it still seems so easy to stumble. I like to pray the scriptures. One of my favorite is Eph 3:16b-19 ( It was Pauls prayer for the saints) "To be stregthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you , being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fulness of God. "
I keep thinking if I could truely see and comprehend His love... How it would change my life.

I've been going through Erwin Lutzer's book "How to Say No to a Stubborn Habit" and jotting notes for myself on my blog. This morning as I was reading a section explaining that the goal is not just victory over a particular sin, but rather loving God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength (Mark 12:30), it was a stunning thought to me that every time I choose my way instead of God, I am not loving Him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Phil 4: 12-13 I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether lining in plenty or in want. I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.
I know Paul was talking about what he could afford, but really with health issues, can we really afford all the prepared foods, and bad food choices?
I Have been on diet therapy for 12 years, for an illness. I found that once I learned to be content with the healthy food choices it was much easier. I was then able to enjoy them so much more, instead of always feeling deprived.
I am not perfect, every once in a while those nasty foods look so inviting, but then I pay. Then I have to go back and see how I can use what I have ( my healthy choices) and be content with it. I need to see the healthy foods as a gift from God. emoticon

Heb 4: 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are- yet was without sin.
I like Joni Ericson Tada, she said it helped her when she was laying in her hospital bed to see Jesus as the messy Jesus ( going through the same struggles as she was, unable to wipe His own face on the cross). She said is was easier to see Jesus walking through the struggles with her.
He faced all of our challenges so He could walk along with understanding and support for us.

I came across this verse while studying something else:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Matthew 23:25

One of the sins of the Pharisees was that they were "full of excess." How convicting to one with a lot of excess weight!

Yet it is helpful, too. One of my struggles is that, unlike a smoker or alcholic, we can't just put away what we indulge in. We do have to eat. And it depresses me to think of never eating a cookie or burger again. But if I keep in mind that excessiveness, either of the amounts or the wrong types of foods, is the problem, I think that hekps me get ny mind around handling it.

In chapel it our Principal preached on Philippians 4:13. I get so wrapped in what I nedd to do, and I forget that all my strength comes from God. he is the one who enables me. I truly have been neglecting prayer for this. (there have been other pressing needs) However, I know nothing is insignificant in God's eyes. I have begun to pray everytime I am about to go walking, or get on my elliptical. I ask God to give me the strength to do the task. ALso to provide safety. Sometimes I want to "help" God by doing more than I am able to, and I know the Lord does not need my help!

I used the First Place program years ago and dropped 13 pounds during that Bible study. I still have the materials. A group of ladies from our church got together every week to support each other and gatered together for the Bible study. We even had a sister in Christ that led an aerobics class for us in the basement of the church. It was a great time. It was nice having the support of fellow Christian sisters.

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1,2

My DH preached on the last verses on Sunday and it was such a help to me. He talked about how when the Olympics first began in Greece, it was only for men. They participated naked and shoeless, because they didn’t want anything to get in their way or hold them back from the goal. He challenged us to think about the things (some are sins, some may not be) that are holding us back from being what God wants us to be. Those verses have kept me on track this week!

First Place is published by the southern baptists, but anyone can use it. It is a diet accountability Bible study group. The basis is that if Christ is in First Place the sinful bad habits will disappear. I am currently working through one of their Bible studies and reading a book that was written by the founder, Carole Lewis. You can buy their materials at a Baptist bookstore. They can be pricey, but ebay and half.com have some. If you go to their website, you can find a group that meets near you. They meet in churches, dr.s offices and private homes. It is a commitment, but I know some that said this was life-changing for them and it showed!

My Daily Light devotional book had some food for thought today that can be applied to weight loss.

In Exodus through Joshua, Israel was to drive out the inhabitants of the land that God gave them. They were warned in Numbers 33:55: "If ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; . . . those which ye let remain of them shall
be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell." That's exactly what happened: I don't think they ever did inhabit all of the land that they were supposed to, and the former inhabitants who remained for the most part caused them a lot of trouble.

I need to remember that in regard to my weight. When I don't deal with eating and exercising as I should, the results are going to be vexing and cause more trouble in the long run.

Another verse in today's reading is II Corinthians 10:3-5:

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ...

You know, I tended to think of v.5 in relation to sins of the mind, but really every sin starts with a wrong thought. The idea of taking those thoughts of temptation to eat the wrong things or too much into captivity to the obedience of Christ is helpful to me.

Other verses in today's reading:

Fight the good fight of faith. (I Timothy 6:12).

We are more than conquerors through him that loved us.(Romans 8:37).

I've been thinking a lot about that verse and denying myself. We can't take up our cross without denying ourselves and this includes every area of our life.

I Cor. 9:25: And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

Luke 9:23: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. (Though I don't know if we would call losing weight a "cross," this verse does emphasize denying ourselves.)

I like this post!

It reminded me of one of my favorite scriptures that I used to motivate myself when I worked out or otherwise practiced self discipline in high school. It is:
Philippians 3:14
Pressing on Toward the Goal
"14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

When my friend or I would whine that we were tired on the walk, the other would say "Press On!"

What a fun memory! And you know, I was much skinnier then!

There were two more that jumped out at me from my Daily Light on the Daily Path devotional book this morning. They don't speak of weight loss directly, but they do speak of struggling with the lusts of the flesh:

Brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live according to the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. Romans 8:12-13.

Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul. I Peter 2:11.

This question has been just what I needed. I have been studying the fruit of the Spirit temperance(self-control)and longsuffering(endurance)in Gal. 5:22-23. It's easy to exhibit temperance for a short time, but what about over the long haul? What about when we don't see the results that we want? Do we quit or do we endure? A verse that I memorized last year keeps coming to mind. 2 Cor 4:17 "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;" I'm finding that the dieting process is accomplishing far more in my heart than in my body and I am thankful.

Your PS about "P.S. Ever wonder why we don't hear much preaching on this topic?" was one I wonder about as well. I wonder if the pastors today are too worried about upsetting their congregation. I wish I had heard more lessons on it when I was younger. I didn't know I was doing anything wrong until my 20's. By then it was a deep seated problem and habit. By the way thanks for your verses. I copied them off. Have a good night.

Thanks for those great comments. I can't believe I forgot the one about eating what is sufficient -- one time before when I was trying to lose weight I leaned on that a lot.

Thank you for this great topic. I've printed the verses and plan to keep them close at hand (in my Bible) to study and inspire. I so want to please the Lord in taking care of myself as well as every aspect of my life.

God Bless!

This is a great topic of discussion and so helpful to me. We had a similar discussion in the IBSG, Does weight loss matter to Christ?

Any resolutions that I came up with this year, I have tried to back with Scripture so that they will stick! The verses posted here have been such a help to me. Here are some that I came up with...

“Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.”~ Proverbs 25:16

“And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.”
~ Deut. 21:20 In this verse, gluttony is “associated with a loose and undisciplined lifestyle—disobedience, stubbornness, and rebellion.”
~The Woman’s Study Bible

“Scripture speaks especially harshly about gluttony—linking it with poverty. Gluttony can indicate excessive eating and drinking, and it does refer to a ravenous, nearly unstoppable, appetite. It is to food what greed is to material wealth, a craving that cannot be satisfied…

Gluttony has been smiled upon in modern times. Though never listed on the death certificate, you would probably be amazed at how many diseases have gluttony as a root cause. Solomon prescribed drastic measures if a person is ‘given to appetite.’ He said, ‘Put a knife to your throat’ (Prov. 23:2), a stern and severe way of dealing with an undesirable habit or a health problem.

Daniel recognized that food and drink affected nutrition and health (Dan. 1:8; 12-16), and Solomon speaks of deceitful ‘delicacies’ and warns us not to desire them (Prov. 23:3). Many modern foods have been robbed of their vital nutrients and contain ingredients that may fill our bodies with elements that take the place of nutritious foods. The gluttonous use of foods high in sugar and fat takes away from the nutritional balance of milk, fruit, vegetables, meat and bread, which contain fiber and other nutrients for good digestion and health.

First and foremost, we are not to satisfy our selfish and harmful appetites but rather use our bodies to bring glory to God (1 Cor. 6:19-20).” ~The Woman’s Study Bible on Gluttony: An Undisciplined Appetite

“And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”
~2 Cor. 12:7-10 I believe these verses can be applied to emotional eating. Do I turn to God for grace in times of infirmities, reproaches, necessities, persecutions, distresses, etc. or do I turn to food? I have been taught that anything that replaces God is an idol. I'm thinking that when I turn to food, I am making it an idol in my life.

Keep on keeping on...We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!!! ~Phil. 4:13

P.S. Ever wonder why we don't hear much preaching on this topic?

I just noticed this one was missing:

"Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body." 1 Corinthians 10:19-20,nlt

It's my fave on the subject. Gets me right where I live.

If I am going to keep the right focus, I need to base this on Scriptural principles. That will keep me focused and on track and keep the larger issues (no pun intended :) ) before me. It's interesting that nowhere in the Bible is being fat called a sin. But being gluttonous and intemperate are. So here are a few passages that pertain to these issues:

1. "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." I Cor. 10:31.

2. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires." Galatians 5:22-24, NKJV.

3. Hebrews 11:25 says of Moses that he chose "rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season." There is pleasure is sin for a season – but how very short a season of pleasure it is to eat something. Sure, there is anticipation before and remembrance after, but even that is short-lived in comparison to the consequences.

4. Philippians 3:18-20 speaks of enemies of the cross of Christ "Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things." Whose God is their belly – that is a sobering thought, that I am making my belly (or mouth, which is what enjoys the taste of food) a god.

5. "Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags." Proverbs 23:20-21.

6. "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." I Cor. 9:27.

7. "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." Colossians 3:1-2.

Have you found any other passages that are helpful in this area?
