Congrats on reaching 10000 steps even if it confused the dog. I know sometimes at work I have 1-2 minutes to kill so I will just walk around. It all adds up, so keep the streak going!

Well, I didn't keep moving. Medical/health problems were a big hump to get over last month. Back to basics, and start moving again!

I'm committing myself to that 10,000 steps (or more) every day. Tonight, I had to finish up trekking through the house over and over. The cat tried to snatch me as I went by. The dog just watched, wondering....

I have been struggling to stay with my workout plan! I only seem to manage one strength workout per week and my biking and walking frequency is down as well. It is so important to keep at it as we enter colder weather and holiday season, the days of excuses nd indulgences. S I need to start my good habits back up now before it gets even harder!

I DID CONTACT COACH JEN AND SHE GOT BACK TO ME RIGHT AWAY. APPARENTLY THERE IS A DIFFERENT FITNESS TRACKER FOR NEW MEMBERS. EVERYONE THAT WAS ON SPARK BEFORE, HAS A DIFFERENT ONE THAN WHAT I SEE. SO THOSE THAT WERE TRYING TO HELP ME ( AND THE VIDEO THEY SHOW) ARE NOT USING THE SAME TRACKER THAT I HAVE. NO WONDER IT MADE NO SENSE. SHE TOLD ME HOW TO NAVIGATE IT MUCH EASIER AND IT WORKED. BUT I WISH IT SHOWED A WEEKLY TOTAL OF MINUTES WITHOUT RUNNING THE REPORT EACH TIME. OF WELL, DAILY MINUTES IS FINE TOO. SHE WAS NOT AWARE THAT THE VIDEO HAD NOT BEEN CHANGED. I BET IT WILL BE SOON.

Yup! I had to hit the list of favorites and then put in how many minutes I did each and I am just guessing on some of them. There needs to be some way that they calculate that for you, like they calculate the nutritional value of an entered recipe. Still, it does come pretty close to what I actually did. My big deal is that I do chair crunches. You hold the crunch for the entire span of a TV commercial and some of them are 5 minutes long! I do 9 of these each night for a total of 45 minutes in addition to my morning exercises. Spark does not believe it is possible to do 45 minutes of crunches but you should see the difference they have made on my abundant waist. On my first try, I couldn't even do 2 minutes. The one thing that I am sure on is my steps as I wear my pedometer everywhere I go. I even attach it to my jammies as I often have to get up at night and walk a little to ease the pain.

I agree! The fitness tracker is a bear. After a time, I just decided that l'm not a detail person, and life is too short to count everything. So, I just track certain things, and I've decided that one 20 minute session doing a particular activity on a given day, will be much like doing that same thing another day. Then after some time, I'll decide to track a different activity. The point I think, is to do SOMETHING consistently.

With a pedometer, steps are easy to count, and you get a fairly accurate number. Miles are trickier to plan and calculate. So I do steps.
For myself, I set up a check box to track strength exercise, another for stretching, etc. If I can check those boxes most days, I know I'm doing pretty much okay. Not so much counting, and no mental arithmetic.
We can do this!

Yup! I had to re-enter many things today even though I had listed them as my "favorites." When I clicked on favorites, they all came up but I had to enter the sets, reps, weights and min. again for each exercise. Between that and entering a new recipe, my entire morning was spent on those two things. Hopefully I will get faster.

Lord! That fitness tracker is the most confusing thing I have encountered yet! It took me forever to figure out how to enter things. It should be interesting to see how it comes up tomorrow. But I got in 98 minutes yesterday and 170 today. I exercise too much but I have to to keep myself upright. I have some disabilities from my car wreck and have to keep moving or freeze up.

I have so little free time that I find myself doing some of my exercises while I am doing something else. While waiting for something to cook, I will get in my hand weights. When trying to watch TV, I will do chair crunches (cool - look for the video on youtube) Since I live in an apartment, I can walk the halls while waiting for the laundry to get done. I don't take the stair though as my knees just won't let me. I also have some special stretches to get in daily to help with the damage from a former car wreck. It takes me an extra 45 minutes in the morning to get going when I do the exercises. I already get up at 5:30 so I really don't want to have to get up earlier than that to get in more exercise. So I guess I'll have to see how I can add more during the day - although I sit at a desk and really don't get a lunch break.

Aubrey--good for you! I am doing ok; I have only missed 2 days of working out in the past 4 weeks--one because I had a vicious headache and the other because I had too much work to do. I've started my new school year (teaching) and know that everything will become more challenging.

How's everyone else doing?

Just posting to say that I did get it done! It always feels so much better to have it over and done with. Now, I just need to focus on getting my walks in no matter what on the other days.

Just posting here for accountability. I did not do my workout on Monday because I was so sore and tired from installing flooring both days on the weekend. Today I was just tired and stressed and bailed, so I decided to post here so I *WILL* do it tomorrow!

I am back on track with exercising! I realized that if I let the heat and other life factors be my excuses, I was going to have nothing but excuses for weeks. So I just decided to spend at least some tim each day- if I am tired I can make it easy and if it hot I can do something inside. Impdiments to exercise are mostly in my head so I just need to challenge my creativity to find a way around them.

I have been so bad at exercise this month! We just started a major home fix-up project that affects the living room/dining room/kitchen area, so a ton of stuff got packed and moved upstairs and I no longer have access to my free weights, let alone room to work out in! However, I don't think anything has made me as tired as the two afternoons we spent painting the vaulted ceiling.

So my goal is to get that stuff unearthed and get a strength workout done again before I get weak again!

Aberlaine - I do hope you feel better soon, and I'm so proud of you for managing to get in two exercise routines! It has to help.

Alto - I hear you on that New Mexico heat - do you get afternoon thunderstorms in the late summer? I know we did in Albuquerque, but I don't remember having them in Carlsbad, so southern NM may be different. I love a good thunderstorm. I am sorry you had to give up your night walking. I love a good evening walk - though my husband insists on going with me if it's after dark, even though we live in an extremely safe neighborhood. It is definitely true that it's hard to see after dark, though.

It is going to be nearly 100 again this weekend so we are bailing on the city and going on a 3-day weekend camping trip, to where the high will only be 80. I haven't been camping in the sense of sleeping in a tent for many, many years, so I'm hoping it goes ok. The spot has some nice hiking around it so hopefully I will get plenty of activity in (which I wouldn't do any of if I stayed in the hot, hot city!)

Yes, please do take it easy when you're hurting. During my last big autoimmune flare the legs were nearly useless -- no baths, driving, etc. Much pain. I got a small walker to help me with some things, had my husband make a platform for the dog dishes so I could feed and water Abby, got a gripper for the car door to help me get out of the passenger seat, looked for all the cut-outs and ramps in curbs .... It was a different life. When the flare eased, I was determined that I would make myself as strong and flexible as I could. If that didn't hold off a next time, at least I'd be better prepared for it. I came to believe that I could do more for myself than any physician could do for me.
Aim to astonish your doctors!

I've got basically three workouts that I rotate - just to keep motivated. I can ride my exercise bike for 10 minutes (hope to get it higher), do chair exercises for 15 minutes, or walk my dog for 30 minutes. Unfortunately walking my dog requires fairly nice weather so I haven't been doing that lately.

I'm finding it's hard to get motivated to do any of the three routines. I've got fibromyalgia which leaves me with no energy and arthritis in my knees which hurts when I do exercises.

I have done two of the exercise routines in the past two days so you could say I'm on a roll. I just hope I can keep it up.

Here in southern New Mexico, it is now over 100 F every afternoon, and this will continue for a few weeks. My entire activity routine is controlled by the heat, making the outdoors a no-no most of the day.
I used to walk at night at this time of year, but three distressing tumble-downs in the dark put an end to that. I really like to walk at night, and miss it. Most of the year, daytime walking outdoors is lovely, but now it's a short walk very early with Abby, then the treadmill later to finish up those 10,000 steps.
I actually have learned to prefer the strength training. It feels so good to be strong again, and I don't have to perspire! I do the strength and stretching at home with Mirabai Holland DVDs. Mirabai is a gentle, quiet person, who does most of her low-impact DVDs at a beach with the sound of the waves in the background. No shouting, no grunting, no loud rock.

I do pretty well on the cardio work, not so much on the strength, which I skip more than I should.

I walk the dog nearly every day except when it's horribly hot. I have been keeping that to about half an hour since it's been so warm out even after the sun goes down. I'm a heat wimp. I also ride my bike at least twice a week, which I find far more fun than any other activity because I go so much farther and see so much more than just walking! On the weekends I pop it into the trunk of my car and drive to one of the nicer bike paths around town and go for a ride somewhere from 70 to 90 minutes. It's tiring but I enjoy it a ton.

For strength training, I'm currently doing New Rules of Lifting for Life. I love it because it lets you pick your own exercises, which makes it a lot easier to do at home. I have gotten SO much stronger - it makes a much bigger difference to my everyday abilities than the cardio stuff does. I was very afraid to lift heavy things when I started but I've gone at my own pace and learned how to make it challenging but not too scary. I never in my life thought I'd be able to lift 100 pounds of anything! I also really feel the difference in how much more stable my back is when I'm moving around.

I'm into a good exercise routine. I like to walk around my neighborhood which is woody and parky. There are no sidewalks, however, so I have to be very careful when I'm listening to my iPod. When the temperature is extreme, which it often is, I go to the gym which is very close to my house. I alternate routines. I like the elliptical the best. I also use the treadmill, the stationary bike, the rowing machines, and the strength training machines.
Listening to books on tape has being the big change in my exercise life. I had music on my iPod but that didn't do enough to maintain my interest. I don't much like dance music or pop music and my definition of lively music would be a symphony as opposed to a string quartet.

I try to hit 6-7 days a week when I am not working. I really want to make the last weeks of summer count before I go back to school in mid-August.

I tried a trial Spinning class and could not keep up. Also it was very loud. Everyone in the class was 20 or 30 or 40 years younger than me, so it was really not my milieu.

Exercise is good for my mood. I always feel a lot better when I am working out. My depressions are not as dire when i am working out; I don't worry about the things I cannot control as much. Working out gives a shape and a purpose to my days when I am not actually working.

What about the rest of you?

My beloved 4'10" round little grandmother said she would rather wear out than rust out. I never saw her rusting! And she was active into a good old age ... lovely cook too.

This is the right spot to share your activity. How does exercise affect your mood? What works best for you, and what do you need more (or less) of?

WE ARE MADE TO MOVE, SO LET'S DO IT!
