HANNAHVSPARKLES, I'm sorry we won't see you at SteamCon this year. I just took a look at the link you posted, and thought, "Hey, I would have really enjoyed that show."

I've got to apologize, I didn't intend to drop this thread. I just got caught up with some personal stuff.
You guys are struggling in a tough business but you have a clear understanding of you needs and can show that you are consistent and professional. Just keep doing that and your name will grow. I use my one voice to encourage Steamcon to seek out more diverse entertainers next time. Someday I hope I'll be able to offer folks like you more material support.
Wishing you luck!

Thanks for your kind words; I would love to meet you, too! One of the difficulties that we run into in booking is that bands have kind of monopolized the entertainment industry, to the point that other forms of entertainment are not just overlooked, but considered as non-valuable. For instance, to book Abney Park is $5000 plus transportation and lodging for 5 people over 2 nights. Steampowered Giraffe (awesome guys, they really try to work with you) are $4000 plus lodging. There seems to be no qualm in finding that kind of money to book an expensive band, even though their overall entertainment value is limited. Think about it: you're getting a group of folks that...sing & play, you get to watch, scream, maybe clap and sing along if you've listened to enough to actually know the words. We charge $2500 for our largest stage show, plus $0.55 mile round trip and room charges. Additionally, when a con books us, we'll throw in smaller performances for little to no cost, and attend all weekend doing impromptu performances while mingling. For approximately $3500, SteamCon could have gotten a whole WEEKEND of magic, comedy, and ongoing audience engagement and participation. But magic isn't considered a valuable entertainment commodity. That's why, even though UtopiaCon wants us, (and we consider it professionally advantageous to go), they can't pay us - an unknown, typically valueless, commodity. So we have to raise an enormous amount to get there...hence, the begging campaign!

That really is too bad, I would have enjoyed the show and the opportunity to meet you immensely. I suppose they don't see the hypocrisy of hiring outside Seattle for musicians (to keep things fresh) but limiting themselves to their locale for other entertainers. Perhaps it is mostly a financial motivation. I am sorry either way and hope we might manage to meet sometime at another con.

Unfortunately for SteamCon, my husband and I will be performing at UtopiaCon in Cincinnati over the same weekend. We offered to bring our show to SteamCon...they said, "I think we can find local people to do the same thing." Fat chance, their loss. Seattle snobs. For a glimpse of our show, and to contribute to getting poor, stranded Professor and Olivia to the con, you can go to igg.me/p/110742?a=629496 . In the meantime, I've got to drop some inches so I can wear a fabulous new corset!

I'm hoping to pull off the Kitsune for my monster this year. No pictures yet as I've not started working on the dress part since I have so much weight to drop before then.

Also I asked on the steamcon facebook page about Abney park.

Diana Vick No, this year's headlining band is Rasputina.

Diana Vick Nathaniel Johnstone who used to be in Abney Park will be playing with his new band as well.

Well boo :(

Guess I'll just have to see them when they play Bellevue :D

I'm saving my pennies for LoneStarCon3 next year so I won't be in Seattle. I'm more of a general sci fi fan and WorldCon in Texas is closer and more up my alley.

Well, we've been chatting so you know I'll be there!
I don't think Abney Park will be though... Last year they kind of decided that since Abney is somewhat local to the area they wanted to bring in artists who would be new to seattleites.

Hi LOUISEMID! I would love to attend, but I doubt that will happen this year. What costumes are you working on? We love to see pictures ~ unless you prefer to keep your creations under wraps until they are ready or after you attend the con.

Hello all!

I was just wondering how many of you are planning on attending Seattle's very own STEAMCON?!

I know I'm going and am working furiously to 1. drop the weight and 2. prep the costumes! Though it's sort of difficult to do one without first doing the other.

Side note... Does anyone know if Abney Park is going to be playing there?
