It is hard to do but getting the workout done early is what worked best for me for the longest streak.. I need to get myself back in that mind set. Baby steps.
I'm going to start off with biking to work at least two times weekly. It's ten miles round trip and take me about 40 minutes one way. I'd like to speed that up a bit as well.

My mini-goal is to get my workouts in soon after I get up and the kids are off to school. I have been talking myself into waiting until evening but inevitably it gets cut one way or another. emoticon

Hi there Skyblue!
Cheers and kudos for getting those work outs happening! you're the emoticon

We have been pretty quiet lately, I'm blaming myself for not even being on the computer much lately emoticon I keep thinking of things I want to share with you all and then making the time to take a picture or get on the net just isnt happening. Life is good though and I'm glad to hear you are doing so well.

Hello Team! Well this week has certainly gotten away from me. My goal this past week has been to get into a somewhat regular workout schedule. It's been going pretty well, although this week has been full of unexpected things. So I guess it's been a normal week emoticon . I had an all day headache yesterday emoticon but it's gone today! I have been trying to exercise 1/2 hour 3 to 5 times a week. It really seems doable and much easier in my mind to set aside 30 minutes. Maybe I will increase it in the future, but for now I just want to get SOME exercise in. It's been pretty quiet on the boards lately. I hope all is well with you everyone!

Hope you are hanging in there Stillflyin! So frustrating to be excited and feeling good only to be interrupted by some crummy bug.
My next mini goal is all about routine building, mostly accessing what isn't working now and how I might like to fix it.

Starting a challenge team is a great idea STILLFLYIN. I was thinking about doing something like that myself. I still use my treadmill most of the time but I know I need to add in some strength training again. As far as my previous mini goal- I redid my craft area and am waiting for a kit to tune up the treadmill. May dear old treadmill still works fine- but it getting really noisy! There are so many changes I am making I don't know if I can list just one this week emoticon

I joined the January workout challenge team so I don't have to think too hard on exercise plans to get back into it. I hadn't done much besides walking since my foot doctor made the changes to my shoes. Days 1 & 2 have been a challenge, but felt good. Plus there's a tiny chance that I could win a prize.

Wow! Planning on 30 seconds a day sounds like something that is doable.

Other smallish habits can help, too. My hubby laughs when I talk on the phone because I can't help it, I walk. I go round and round a path through the house. A long call to a friend or sister can have me walking for hours at a time. Not real fast, but moving all that time. I'm trying to get myself to doing counter push ups before I leave the bathroom and squats while brushing my teeth. I'm not quite there, but it takes some time to get into a habit sometimes.

Every little bit helps!

I just read an article in Newsweek that supports our mini goal strategy! It said that basically if you decide to exercise 30 seconds a day it could be enough to set you on track for a healthy change. 30 seconds is a tiny silly amount so you are less likely to resist it but thinking of it daily builds the habit. With that in mind I'm going to set a mini goal of doing art for one minute a day. If that suits me I'll start doing a minute of cardio a day emoticon

Sounds like a great idea, Stellar. I've read that if you include something pleasant like a short foot massage into your get ready for bed routine, it helps lead into good sleepiness.

I got my modified shoes yesterday. My mini goal will be to ramp up into daily not too fast walks with a view to get back to faster, longer walks later. I wore the shoes yesterday for a marathon shopping trip of about four hours and over did it a bit. Still, it was so nice to walk without pain.

Howdy Everyone! Great news - no surgery for my foot. Unless more conservative measures don't work. Have I mentioned how much I like my foot doctor? He instructed me to buy a pair of new walking shoes and bring them to him to build and replace the inserts. I am to continue my battle with inflammation since that seems to be what is getting in the way of my foot healing itself. It is better than before. Yay!

So my mini goal is to get the shoes bought and to him and keep taking my turmeric as scheduled.

You are so right Skyblue - you have to do it. Of course, with planning you can make eating healthy as easy as possible on yourself. -smile-

Eating reasonably is great, Stellar! It also cuts that fat building stress of trying to be perfect.

My rebounder idea failed big. So now I have an appointment with the foot doctor for week after next. I saw my primary doctor today and after she made me describe my foot issues and what the specialist said six months ago, she said that I'm probably looking at surgery. I hope not, but I have to do something else.

Good news from that appointment, my cholesterol results was excellent again! The primary doctor put me on annual follow up. I was thrilled last year when she moved me to six months. I don't know what is past thrilled, but I'm there. So, I will continue with the Cholesterol Down diet since it works for me.

Sounds good Skyblue! it's worth the extra effort to make the weeks choices easier to make.
My goal this week is not let vacation and birthdays and exciting life become an excuse to indulge at every meal. It's going to be great week and I'm pretty sure the lasting memories wont be coming from the food even if I do go overboard. So I just want to keep that thought in mind and eat reasonably.

My mini-goal this week is that I am going to do some meal planning! I have been putting a lot of energy into projects and I need to put some more into eating better. Good/healthy food doesn't seem to be just showing up in my fridge and cupboards so I better be the one that puts it there. emoticon

Thanks for the reminder Stillflyin. Snuggles, scritchings and rubbings are regularly given to our cats but somehow slid out of the routine with each other... I hadn't even realized. Changing that will be rewarding and free!

Stellar - My hubby loves back scratches and neck or head massages. And foot massages. Rewards don't have to cost money or take a lot of time. Actually thinking about it, in our house those things are rewards for being - not for doing something in particular.
emoticon

My mini goal is to try rebounding again. I have decided that I really hate my stationary bike and since the pollen counts are insane again I have to do my cardio inside. My foot problem seems to be OK with the rebounder as long as I wear the correct shoes. We will see how it progresses.

It seems that for me getting "Sparking" daily again will require getting my computer space established, which will require finishing the floor and paint in our office, which isn't going to reach my priority list until after steamcon. So... this week my mini goal is off line. I've got to stop rewarding myself and showing love to my husband with food- deserts in particular. It's an ingrained habit for both of us but there are better ways to share our joy and do nice things for ourselves and each other.

When I originally started Spark I never thought I was an emotional eater. I didn't think I turned to food for anything other than feeding my body. I was pretty sure I just needed to educate myself and come up with common sense things I could do to stop eating too much especially sugary treats. As it turns out I am way more (pun intended) connected emotionally/spiritually to food then I thought. While my body does crave sugar without me thinking about it - I do get some level of temporary satisfaction from indulging myself in those cravings. It does not pay off though. I just snowball into substituting quality for craving and round and round I go. So what's my mini -goal for the week? Focus on this: I'm supposed to consume food. Food is not supposed to consume me! I truly do have power over my food choices. So we will see what the week brings - I am hopeful! emoticon

I guess I am fortunate - hubby and I have always liked lots of veggies. The problems appear for me with simple carbs. I have found that a small amount of dark chocolate most days keeps my sweet craving mostly under control.

My goal this week is to get back on even keel after the last several weeks of being out of town and getting ready for being out of town. I am so glad to be home again, although I enjoyed my travels.

My goal this week.. Keep calm and carry on? I may up the ante and try to eat more veggies as well, but keeping things simple is the priority for me. How are you all doing?

So glad you like your DVD STILLFLYIN. Hopefully you will find more tai chi only workouts to try. I should get my husband to try his hand at it. He can use all help he can get when it comes to sleep. emoticon

A bit of refreshing sounds great STELLAR! My mini goal is to finish the jacket I am starting. It took me soooo long just to get the pieces cut out ~ I was really taking my time after we got back from vacation. I have been exercising frequently and doing much better on avoiding sugary stuff. Yay! Hope you all have a great week and reach your mini-goals!

I tried my new tai chi dvd and really like it. It has a problem in that it is actually a combination of tai chi, yoga, and basic exercises. So it's not tai chi that I can do forms from. I found it is really good to do right before bed since it helps me go right to sleep - something that I did not expect. Usually exercising before sleep means I don't sleep for a while.

I especially enjoy the tai chi bits, so I'm on a search for more tai chi dvd stuff. There are so many variations and methods of teaching that I had no idea before. The library has a couple of dvds that I'm going to try to check out and see if I like them. Now that I know the first exposure (as in the class I attended at the gym and hated) is not the whole picture, I know to keep looking until I find what I like.

Wow, the days are just escaping me! I'm a good sort of busy but still-
My mini goal this week will be to refresh our team page a bit- mostly just dig up some new stuff to share and see if I can get myself back into the spark routine.

I forgot my mini goal oops emoticon I have started regular exercise once again and I feel better already.
Now the real challenge is to leave the goodies alone. If I can just make it one day without - it will get the ball rolling. It seems strange to read that. It sounds so easy............

My tai chi dvd came in Saturday. I've been blowing and going so much that I haven't had a chance to check it out. My goal this week is to try it out. I love the idea of doing tai chi regularly.

I've had a nice week, I feel regrouped and relaxed. My mini goal this week is to start cutting out some of the bad habits that have been sneaking back in to my routine. Ice cream and fast food in particular have been becoming a problem.

Stellar - Please don't over do it in trying to catch up on everything. If something sits a little bit more, it isn't likely to be a big thing. And if you do the stuff stressing you first, you can follow the 80/20 rule and maybe have a bit less stress.

The main hip loosening exercise probably won't have an obvious benefit right away. You lay on your side with your knees slightly bent and lift the top one just a very little bit and hold it, repeat a few more times, then turn over and do the other side. The idea is to work the deep muscles in your hip instead of the thigh muscles. I was surprised at the bit of soreness that I felt the next day and how quickly I got shaky after 30 seconds or so. I figure it is worth continuing.

My goal this week is to get caught up on as many of the things I've been letting slide as I can. Household chores, prioritizing goals, costuming, spark... I'm sure I wont get around to everything but I'm feeling confident about having a productive week of regrouping.
How is that stretching and strengthening going Stillflyin?

My goal this week is to work on loosening my hip muscles with exercise. One of my friends is seeing a physical therapist prior to knee surgery and told me that they told her that they told her that tight hip muscles can cause problems with knees and feet.

My mini goal will have to be a longer term goal as I will be heading out on a mission trip with my church to Tennessee this Saturday and then onto vacation the next day after I return from that. Eating as sensibly as possible and and getting exercise as I can. On the mission trip that won't be hard though. We are helping with painting and construction on people's home's. Fun but hard work! Vacation will entail lots of walking I just need to enjoy the sights and sounds and the experience instead of focusing too much on just eating because we are on vacation. Hope all my Steam Team has a great few weeks and are also able to enjoy the summertime! See you in July emoticon emoticon !

Yesterday was very busy and longer than I'd planned (we left the house at 6 am and got home at 8 pm!) but while I didn't get in exercise I did manage not to spin out on food stuff. Today is going to be an odd one as well- but hopefully a bit easier. Keep up the good work folks!.

SKYBLUEGIRL, STELLAR - It looks like we keep needing to go back to basics for what works for us. Two steps forward, one back is still a forward step.
emoticon

I have finally figured out how to draw some Celtic knots in a way that works for me. I still have more to learn, but I am finding that I can work on that instead of eating. I'm still working on how I will explain it to my students, but feel better about being able to do so. I'm not totally successful at doing hand work instead of eating, but getting better.

Yay!

I would have to agree about the crafting STELLAR! My mood can definitely get worse depending on what I am doing. I hope your list helps and you continue to find things/activities to get you out of a funk or at least do instead of eating junk.

My weekly mini is tracking calories. I have been doing pretty well but feel that a week back on the tracker will help me use my calories wisely.

Crafting makes me feel good but it isn't an ideal choice for me to improve a bad mood. I tend to just get more annoyed at the project if I'm cranky to start.
My list of thing to try instead of food for changing my mood is starting out with little kind of silly things. Hugs, Bubble stuff, Kitty snuggles, Hot showers. A walk can help me or rile me up worse depending. I'm still working on the list.
I saw on the filler fluff news this morning that changing your posture to a "happier" position (like imitating a person who just crossed a finish line- chin up arms out) can improve your hormones and mood. I'll have to try it before I decide if I think it's hooey.
I've got a very busy week planned but my goal is to get into the gym three times and to lose one pound. I am at 220 this morning.

I get more pleasure out of accomplishing things than having little treats. I'm thinking I need to establish some stuff that I can enjoy doing with my hands when I feel tired and stressed. I can't eat if my hands are busy at something productive and I know this works for me. Part of my problem with that right now revolves around the fact that most of the projects that fill that need are at a point that require serious planning or a lot of mental work and decisions before I can do them. And I feel stressed at the thought of doing that brain work. Since I'm trying to avoid stress, that is a problem.

Hmmm, just identifying the problem and "talking" about it with this team may help. Your idea of a list of activities that make me feel good might work. I think I'll get my to do list out again and think about it.

"Just say No" Gosh that brings back memories of after school specials and don't do drugs commercials. Just about as effective a tactic then.
The buddy system helps me sometimes, but it is hard to find the right kind of pal for the task.
When I want the goodies or junk it is because I want a treat or a reward. Isn't it nice to want to do something nice for yourself?
I have heard about folks who made up an "emergency" or recovery kit of small items or a list of activities that make you feel good or indulgent.
I bought a bottle of bubble stuff but I haven't gotten farther than that yet, and I haven't learned of anything new that can get me an instant response the way a bad food choice does.
Maybe if I made myself a rule where I have to call a friend before any junk choice. humm
Anyone else have ideas?

SKYBLUEGIRL - I totally understand your challenge with sweets. Hubby and I ate out on Monday and I had something that had some wheat flour in it. I've been having huge problems staying on my schedule ever since. I've managed to not eat any more wheat, but am fighting the cravings, increased hunger, and systemic inflammation that seems to come to me with eating wheat. I'll get past it, but it is a minute to minute battle that I don't always win.

So -- what are we going to do when challenged so strongly? I'm thinking just saying no won't work for me. Any ideas?

I love reading everyone's goals. It always encourages me to stay focused on some aspect of my eating/health.
I have been abstaining from sugary sweets for a few months and it's been great. But last week I had a piece of rhubarb pie. Just a little piece and every day since I have been eating at least one small "treat" and my cravings in general have been nuts! I am not ready to eat sweets and I don't know when I will be but apparently it really freaks out my system. I am not willing to fall back into the guilt and despair sweets lead me to. Kinda sad but not really. emoticon

Determining to stick with your eating plan is a great goal. So is re-evaluation. I know you both will do wonderfully.

This week my goal is to make the foods I eat look more appealing. Ever since I started the new eating plan my meals are healthier, but not very pretty. Now why did I stop making my meals visually pleasing just because I started a new way of eating. Silly, huh...

More fruits and veggies and more walking! Great goals ladies! I am focusing on monitoring my appetite to see when I am truly hungry and when I am bored or needy. I have been writing down how I am feeling when I crave things to see if it's hunger talking or the need for comfort. Should be interesting. emoticon

That sounds like an excellent goal. I'm sure that you'll do great.

Good focus! I'm going to start waking up earlier so I have time to walk to work in the mornings. My work up to goal will be to walk to work daily and go the gym 3 days a week.

This week I'm concentrating on what I'm increasing in my eating plan, such as fruits, veggies and whole grains - and to stop focusing on what I'm decreasing.

Grimm - you are loosing that weight like clockwork emoticon

Stellar-Lights - wishing you a week filled with steamy, and timely, lights out.

As for me, I'm thinking that this week I want to focus on exercise. I plan on working out 4 times this week, and then walking for an hour the other 3 days.

Wow! way to blow it out of the water! Congrats.
I'm sticking with my goal of getting enough sleep each night and bonus points if i work on keeping my stress below the critical levels that have seemed so normal lately. Good luck everybody!

I ended up with another nutty week, but after getting a full night of sleep last night it is pretty clear to me what my next mini goal should be. Early to bed you say Mr Franklin?

I hope the pollen doesn't get you.

My mini goal this week is to keep breathing until I get past spending too much time in the pollen.

My family sprinkled this quote around freely, I don't know why I wouldn't. And, when I remember it, it always helps me to focus...

NEWGOALS2 -- I agree with SKYBLUEGIRL. One step at a time and be happy at having made that step. That family quote is so shiny that I may have to add it to my SparkPage. Is that OK with you?

Thanks for the welcome. I have to admit it did help yesterday. I actually ate lunch, a well thought out lunch that I wasn't ashamed to put in my nutritional tracker.

As I've heard from many in my family, when you're trying to make a change - a little bit of somethin' is a lot better than a whole lot of nothin' ...

Wishing you all well.

Glad to have you on board with us. Even if I don't do so well on a mini goal focusing on them can help me take note of the subtle improvements I'm making over time.
You can do it!

I'll go for it - since I forget to eat lunch at a decent hour. I'll go for a mini-goal of eating a good lunch between 11:30 and 1pm each day. Thanks for the idea...

As I've said before, celebrate every success - in this case, celebrate and be proud of your good lunches!
