Stop. Think. Now Eat.
1-minute fix for overeating
by Marianne McGinnis

Just before their afternoon snack, women who paused to remember lunch ate 55 percent fewer calories than those who mindlessly noshed away, one study shows.

Taking a moment to ponder your previous meal may remind your brain (and your stomach) that you're actually still full, concludes author Suzanne Higgs, PhD, of the University of Birmingham, England.

The trick: Think about each food you had and what the portions looked like before you feed quarters into the candy machine. Doing this just once a day could help you lose up to 14 pounds in a year.

MZCOFFEY-
Become a more conscious eater. What does that mean, and how do you do it? It had to do with how you talk to yourself. For example, if your stomach starts to growl at 3pm, tell yourself you're going to eat a mini-meal, not a snack. In fact, research from the State University of New York at Buffalo found that people who viewed their midday treat as a snack ate 87 percent more at dinner than thoes who regarded the treat as a mini-meal. In other words, being a conscious eater is partly about perception: Viewing what your eating as a mini-meal instead of snack may help you eat less later.

Set food on a plate or in a bowl so that you can see precisely what you're eating. Eat a mini-meal at a slower pace than you would eat a snack and repeat the conscious-eater's mantra three times: "I'm eating a mini-meal, not a snack."

I'm going to give this a try. I need all the help I can get. Around 4pm after doing well all day things start to change.

I also forgot about not eating anything that doesn't come on "my" plate(saucyone) Meaning nothing that comes out of a bag, pouch, snck pack etc..

I really like this Idea and for the rest of this month everything I eat will be a sit down affair with a plate.

When we fail one day even by a little bit we should look at how we feel and why we did what we did. Then and only then can we learn how not to treat ourselves the way we have.

Thanks to SP, I am always looking at calories when I try to buy some food. I saw this bacon, cheeseburge at the store once, and I asked to see the package. I looked and no calories posted. I wanted it so bad, but I told myself if there are no calories that means it's not for me at this time.

APHILLIPS1~it is so much more than just learning to eat right. we are emotional eaters and need to really get in touch with the emotions- feel the anger- the lonliness- the frustration-the grief and not bury them with hot fudge or bags of corn chips. they will always be there and we need to learn to deal with them without turning to food. food is not the enemy- the emotions are. learning to eat healthy and be in control is great, but emotions will always be there waiting to sabatoge us again unless we get in control of them. this will be a life long battle for us and we will never truly win- we can never stop fighting and being diligent in this. face it- we will fight this until the day we can no longer fight. it is not something we are doing for a while and then can relax- never. and if we cant face that fact we will continue to rebound again and again. for me- i want to be in control of my own life and i will learn to feel the emotions and not bury them- or else they will bury me!!!!!!!
Great advice from Andra

Okay I decide to start a special thread dedicated to challenges and advice because lately everyone has been posting so much great advice or stating challanges they have set for thierselves. I am copy and pasting the ones that I have found to be good/helpful, so they are all together on one page to veiw.
DENAMARIE1~Since emotional eaters react (eating when stressed, sad, depressed etc.) try using the 10-10-10 rule. Stop and think about that cookie you are about to eat. What will that cookie mean to you in 10 minutes, 10 hours, 10 days. You can insert any time increment you want (minutes, days, months etc.) The point is, after that cookie is gone how are you going to feel about it in 10 minutes. Regret it? Then don't eat it. I found that this rule really helps me out. I picture myself in 10 minutes and think about it - do I really want or need that cookie? I think about myself in 10 days and think about that cookie (now what does it represent?)

MARTIDL~WEEKEND WARRIORS This past weekend I planned in advance what I was going to eat, wrote down my choices, and when something came up to change my food options I made sure I substituted something that was just as healthy.

MZCOFFEY~ Quitting coke(anyone addicted to coke or soda its a good idea to quit, good job!)

I can't remeber which post it was but there was a lot of talk ( LAURALEEE) about the reasons not to eat after 7:30 pm. That was one thing that has helped me alot to know that if I don't eat after 7:30 my body will start using the fat stores, hey I won't eat after 7:30 evr again no matter how much I want to!

I know everyone has challanges and Ideas to add to this thread so I won't fill it up
I just want to remind everyone of something I had said before Please support an encourage yourselves as you would one of us, we are all so supportive to each other it we be nice if we could be this kind to ourselves
Huggs to you all!~Rachael
