My motivation has been gradual, but seems to have staying power. I had to gradually bring change into my life, which is what they suggest!

your gonna do great! I think of the people here as my backup team! Everyone is behind me helping me along the way. Sorta like the Cingular commercials where the guy comes out after buying a phone and there is the whole network support waiting to follow him to help him out. That is what Sparkpeople is to me!

for me motivation takes many forms. something i read- something i see- the size 26-28 pair of jeans hanging in plain sight so i will remember where i came from- seeing my sister at 320 lbs and watching her struggle just to walk the mall-seeing the smirk on her face when i gained some of the weight back- that really got my b### up and moving. its hard to keep going when you just dont feel "it" but if you do the feeling will come back. pray about it. read books magazines tv shows on weight loss or the morbidly obese and something will click and when it does you will be off and running! just hang in there. we are here for you

Every morning I start my day with breakfast and praying for strenght, then telling myself I am worth it and that I am amazing women. Then I read my quotes and articles on here. When i get down in the dumps I have my support...my best friend that says put down the cookie I will be right over. Then talk and walk its some much better

Cuffy-There's a great SP article that I just read this morning that might help you. It's called Write Your Own Success Story, and it's about making yourself a contract, and getting rid of the excuses. Once I accepted the fact that the weight was never going to go away with the way I was eating, and once I started applying the SP tips and methods, things improved. Above all else, God motivates me to go on!

Pauljoanne,

I really like your message because it makes so much sense. I think alot of people do use the "big butt" theory to start themselves on the path to losing weight but if they are an emotional eater like myself, most of the time they stray from the path not necessarily because they ate that extra Twinkie but because they never addressed the root issue that drove them to the Twinkie in the first place! So this time around I am making healthy food choices, not denying myself "treats"...just staying in control of what those "treats" will be and SLOWING DOWN...not being in such a hurry to lose like 10 pounds in one week because I know when I DON"T lose another 10 pounds the following week that I will try to read into it as a "failure" on my part instead of being able to focuse on any "victories" I might have actually accomplished in the past. For me, SLOW AND STEADY, will win my weight loss race and just look at the friends I've picked up along the way within these threads because I took the time to SLOW DOWN!

How do you motivate yourself, if perhaps, God hasn't saved you yet? I understand how God's presence can really support you, to know that there is always someone there watching and protecting you. Perhaps this (losing weight) is a test to see how loyal and passionate you are.

I think your boyfriend is right. For me it just seemed to happen one day. I decided "this is enough, I don't want to feel like this anymore." When you are honestly ready, it will get easier. I'm not saying that this journey is easy, far from it. Just saying that you will find inspiration in the smallest things. Hope that helps...

I like Dr. Phil's approach on this subject because he says you cannot base your weight loss on motivation but you have to plan for success. So for me that means, buying food at the store based on a list of healthy items rather than just going and trying to wing it. Finding people you can be accountable to and who will help you stay motivated especially when your not. Journaling helps me sort through my emotions and why I want to eat. Setting big and small goals and then rewarding yourself (in a healthy way) is another way to keep on track. I personally know my downfalls and I think knowing myself and where I tend to fall short in my own weight loss endeavor I just have to have a game plan for those areas. Also, finding inspirational quotes and putting those up here and there can also be helpful. Just gotta keep your eye on the prize!

I pray, say to myself "you can do it",sometimes is just a point where I have to pull myeslf up and make myself do the undesireable thing like exercising. I read motivational quotes from the community boards. But mainly I pray for strength. Its a personal decision. Sometimes you got to press forward in spite of yourself.

emoticon Big hug Cuffygirl, I agree with everyone else that you have to make a decision and find something that motivates you. In truth, for me I think I am finally fed up with being overweight and feeling unlovable because to me I feel huge. My husband has never said anything to me, but to me it's a preception in my head.Find what kicks you in the backside and grab hold of it. I have my mantras posted eveywhere in the house with the virtual images of me now and what I will look like one day. Know we are here rooting for you!

Actually Oprah is a brilliant role model for us all. Here is a woman who has achieved the unimaginable in her life. She has amassed an amazing fortune and used it to help millions of people in many different ways.

An interview she did a few years ago is often quoted to demonstrate the importance of inspiration. It was at one of the times when she was struggling with her weight again.

The interviewer asked how she had managed to come from where she came from to be where she was. And she talked about how she was inspired to help others and how her show and her charities were her way of doing that. And how hard she worked at it because it inspired her and that the money came in as a result.

Then he asked her about her struggle with weight and what was her motivation there. She replied. 'Cause I dont want to have a big butt.

The problem with that kind of motivation is that once you get there the motivation disapears. As soon as she didn't have a big butt then her motivation to control her eating and to exercise disappeared and the typical creaping on of kilos began all over again. Till she saw herself in a magazine or something and realised that she had a big butt again. Then back on the tread mill. Sound familiar?

So getting to your target weight can not be your motivation. Or at least it can be a mile post but it can't be the finish line. If it is then you are virtually guaranteed that in a year or so you will be back here repeating the same old cycle again.

So what does that mean? No finish line or at least not one that you will ever reach. Oprah didnt decide to make x amount of money or to help x amount of people. She dedicated her life to helping as many as she can in various ways.

What's the purpose of your life? And how can you, (unlike Oprah did in the past) link in the importance of being fit, and healthy and in your ideal weight range to that?

Big questions I know but what if there is something really important that only you can do and you eat yourself out of existence before you have a chance to do it?

It's your life. Live it. Love it!

Hi Cuffygirl
I want to be healthy for many reasons. Sure I want to look good in a bikini but i want to set a good example for my sons more. I feel good when I eat right and exercise. I believe that you just need to keep trying. Making little changes like drinking water or exercising daily is so important. You will get there I promise.
Love JJ

motivation is a personal thing, we can get inspired by other people, but that is usually short term. According to Dr. Oz on the Oprah show he said motivation comes from action and i started thinking about it and agreed. i think i can be alot more motivated once i start seeing results or like if i go for a walk even if its only 5 or 10 minutes, afterwards i feel good that i did it, and this then motivates me the next day to do it again and perhaps a little longer. Also if you loose even 1 lb, you are more likely to get motivated to stick to eating healthier. One thing thats helps me, is to ask the question "is this going to improve myself" and i apply it to many areas in my life. Sometimes when that motivation is not there, then it could be that we just arent ready yet, perhaps there are other issues that need to be dealt with first. Loosing weight and exercising is hard work and requires time, and the ability to take care of ourselves in that area. however, there might be some other issues that still need to be dealt with before we can say, ok now i am ready. Dont worry you certainly are not the only one where you are, i think most of us are where you are, but we talk about our issues here and try to resolve them one by one, so that we can get to that point and say "now i am ready"
Andrea

Hi There

Motivation is OK if it means promising yourself rewards Sometimes people use threatened punishments to motivate themselves(Don't go there girl - being hard on ourselves is probably how we let our weight get out of a healthy range in the first place.)

To be really life long though it has to be more than that. You have to find the inspiration for why you are doing this. Your own internal inspiration. And get it so clear in your head that hunk of cake no matter how delicious it looks can get the better of what you really want.

You have to enlist your heart and mind into looking after yourself. Because that is what we are talking about here isn't it? If loosing weight is just about being attractive for other people or other superficial reasons it is really hard to sustain the focus required to not want to make bad choices for yourself. But if you make achieving your healthy weight range and keeping to it one of the most important things to you in your life. Well my friend then it will also be a lot easier to do.

Hi there

I'm sure your boyfriend is right, and it is all in the mind, but personally I like something a little more concrete! I have before and after pictures of myself (which you can print out from My Virtual Model (www.mvm.com) taped to my fridge and cupboards. Everytime I want to eat something I shouldn't I see how awful I look now and how good I can look in a few months if I behave myself!

Good luck

Katie x
