Denny, sorry to hear u'r still having a ruff time. I understand though. Last nite was the first nite in a couple of weeks I made water aerobics. It was finally nice and decently warm. I did get in a good walk on Sat and Sunday (better Sunday, cuz it was longer). My son and I walked to the library and cked out some videos and books - I got "Big Butts Hit the Beach"!! It is fun, I did the video this morning. Didn't make water aerobics tonite cuz my MIL wanted to visit and didn't leave till six. So I did 20 minuts on the tampoline.

Gosh, I hope u rn't down too long after the surgery. But hopefully when it is all said and done u will be that much better!

I do know what u mean about the weather. I am ssssoooo tired of grey dreary days! I am ready for spring and sunshine! That's why I enjoyed this weekend so much! It was still a little chilly, but nothing a brisk walk wasn't able to heat up!

Well, I am glad to hear from u. Keep ur head up and just do what u can. Let me know how u r doing after ur surgery. I'll be keeping u in my thoughts!

Hi Denise,
Been a while and I have been doing terrible. The weather here has been cold and snowy and I haven't been able to get out to walk. Making up for that by eating. Just can't seem to shake this SAD thing. Looking up though as it was warmer today and I got a nice walk in. I went for my pre-surgery check today and will have a proceedure on my ankle on March 2. Really worried about not being able to walk for a while and I don't need that right now. Also going for a stress test next Wednesday. Enough about me how are you doing. I'm sure you have done much better than me. Don't worry I'm not down and out just struggling my way back to possitive.

Denny, I am sorry to hear u r having to see a surgeon. I had my share of surgeries in 2005...gallbladder and then a couple months later hernia. I still need nasal, but i'm just tired of being cut on!! but i hear there are some laser surgeries they can do now... so i may head back to the ENT after I am done with my home remodel. But yes, it is hard staying out of the SAD mood. I have had a ruff time the last two weeks or so cuz it has been sooooo dreary and wet here. I am ready for some SUNSHINE!! emoticon Keep us posted on how u r doing. I was just thinking yesterday that we hadn't heard from u in a while. So don't forget to poke ur nose in and say hello, if nothing else. {{{huggs}}} take care.

Hi Shawnie,
Struggling here but by no means down and out. Hope you have been doing better and everything is falling in place for you. We all need to keep a good attitude through this as a poor attitude only adds to our problems, so lets all put on a big smile on our face and share it with each other. I am giving you all a big smile right now, and I feel better already. :~)My real one was better!

Hi Neece64,
Glad someone has kicked SAD in the butt. Was doing better with the warm weather and being outside but I'm struggling a bit right now. Just need to get in a better frame of mind. Will keep you updated after I see the surgeon next month. Hope you and the kids are having a good 2007.

Hi Wendy,
Got the results from my MRI back and they were abnormal. They refered me to a surgeon to see where it goes from here. I walked today and can get by ok most of the time but jogging or any running and things go bad very fast. Been cold lately and I haven't been walking as much and eating more so I'm struggling a little right now. Was coping much better when it was warmer and I was outside almost every day. Hope things are going ok for you, and we need to look on the bright side Spring is just around the corner.

Denny, kicked that SAD in the butt on New Year's day. Made the kids walk to the grocery store with me!!! It's about 1/2 mile or so from our house, so told them no way we were driving with such a beautiful day out there...not when all we needed was bread and some diet coke. Keep us posted on what the doc says!! And Happy New Year!

Denny, it is so nice here that I ran for 3.5 miles outside with the sun in my face. Loved it and it really put me in a good mood. Let me know when you find out the results from your MRI.
Also are you feeling any better and able to continue walking at all?

Hi Wendy,
I went to the Doc. and they took X-Rays and now want to do MRI. I still walk regularly but it lets me know its there everytime. I see you are doing an exellent job of taking those lbs off and getting close to your goal. I haven't done so well over the holidays and need to get back on track. Going to try and get a long walk in today. The more we stay out in the natural light the better we can get through winter. I am actually down over 10 lbs from this time last year so that is a good thing. My Doc. wants me to get down to at least 170 so right now I need to lose 18 lbs. Just turned 60 and losing weight seems to be a lot harder than it was before. I'm not sure of how the temperatures have been in your area but here they have been above average so I'm not having as much of a problem with SAD as other years. Hope this keeps up. Keep up the good work and you will soon be at your goal. Remember its for you and you are worth it. Make life an adventure, and be happy.

Denny

Denny how is your ankle doing? I had an IT injury last year and had to stop running. Wound up gaining back 20 pounds. In fact I am still working at getting those pounds off. Thank you for your encouraging words.

Hi Wendy,
Wow you are realy doing great. I'm struggling through these winter months. I can't run because of a bad ankle but I walked for two hours yesterday. Raining here today. I'm trying to stick to my commitment of not eating after 7 PM. Will probably do better on that after the holidays. Keep up the great job you are doing.

Denny, yes, it's warm here too...unfortuately, by the time I get out of the office it is almost dark. I am planning on hitting the water aerobics again next week...this week has been a wash cuz I haven't felt good.But wnet to the dr and got some meds and should be good to go come monday! Glad to hear it's been nice out for u so that u can get out and walk. When it is warm here the giant Texas size mosquitos come out..so I try to find inside exercise.

Hi Shawnie,
You are not alone with this seasonal thing and I certainly can tell you it isn't easy but you have people here who are going through the same thing and will be there to encourage you. I am not on meds but would tell you that if they don't seem to be working to not let it go but tell your doctor because not everything works for everyone and maybe you need something different. Don't give in you are special and need to remember that. Keep working on feeling good about your self and how good it will be when you get to some of your goals.

No tropical islands around here either but at least the weather for December is quite warm right now. This has been a great help as I have been out walking most days for 1-2 hours and being out in the sun is great. At this rate I may make it through this year better than the last. If you find one of those islands let me know.

Hi all

I just joined this team tonite. I have to say I am not feeling very optimistic about losing some weight - this time of year is absolutely dreadful for me, especially now that I am across the country away from my family until christmas. I was diagnosed with depression 4 weeks ago and have been taking meds for it, but they dont seem to be working.

Those of you who have taken/take meds, how long until I start to feel better? and stop bingeing?

Hi Neece64,
I guess I need to spend more time chatting in the evenings when I really eat out of control. I am going to try and put a lid on all eating after 7:00PM. Its a start and I have one day in, but was still over in the calorie department.

No offence taken, and yes just thinking about a tropical island and some nice scenery has cheered me up. Of course the support and chat from all here a SP helps too.

Now girls some of us have wives that aren't helping a lot. Mine is way overweight and sometimes makes fun of me trying to lose weight. Just the same, after 39 years she has been a wonderful mate and I'm far from perfect and I don't expect her to be either. But Waaarrrmmm deserted islands with 15 hours of sunshine would be welcome.

Denny, I know...it's so hard, isn't it? But you can do it! Just take it one day at a time. I hate this time of year too....too gloomy and it's time to spend money that we don't have....but just think, by keeping strong, when summer gets here you will look great for the lake, river or ocean (whatever your choice of body of water might be!). I personally am working to a Frio River trip in June. 6 months....gosh....that doesn't sound like very long...but we can do it!!! emoticon

Wow,
It sounds like this affects a lot of us in some way or another. I know that I definitely suffer from depression throughout winter and spring. Already starting to feel the effects. Does anyone else start this early? I know before I go through another winter like this I will definitely see my doctor. It helps to hear that you aren't alone in this.

Oh, I am not recommending a tanning bed, just saying that the light from it does make me feel much better. If I had the time to spend out in the sun each day I am sure I would get the same results. From what I recall hearing when they first started talking about SAD, the lack of light causes our seratonian (sp) to drop, which causes our "blues". I personally could never ever live in a place like alaska (no offense to people in alaska) where you have six months of light and six months of dark!! (or is that just a fable...since I've never lived there, I only know what I've always heard.)

SAD is common-moreso for women...and what I find helpful for me is exercise! That doesn't mean I do it nearly as often as I should, but when I do, I feel way better! Light Therapy is also good...like that which Lori described. The Lamps aren't cheap but the investment is well worth it.

Definately speak with your Dr about this because you are worth it!

Hugs,
Dana

Hello Denny,

Have you consulted your Dr. about your condition? If you haven't yet, I advise you to do so. There may be something that he/she can do for you. Good luck,

I think i'm suffering from SAD too...

I was born and raised in Greece,Athens and i never saw snow in my life!!That is ...until i moved in Montreal,Canada.....

I'm a summer girl...i love the sun and the heat...it always makes me smile..:)

But when the snow comes.....i get depressed...all i want to do is eat and sleep...i'm scared of the freezing rain..and expect work or the grocery store ..i don't go anywhere outside...
I'm staying home with a tank top while my heater is going wild!!!

I've been in canada 6 years now...but i can't get used to the snow and the winter....
Every year it gets worse and worse...

Thank God that i need to work...or else i would never leave my appartement!!!

I have never heard of this before, and suspect we all have at least some of the symptoms. Anybody know what the answer is? (Without medication)

Hi SarahMB and All,
Wow, this turned into a hot topic. Just a little more on the info I read on this. The artical I spoke of didn't recomend tanning beds as treatment because of the ultra violet rays. No sense turning one problem into two. I have had cancer spots removed from my face and I haven't been near a tanning bed. As I have read the postings I see that I am not alone with this and share some symptoms with all of you. Hopefully we can help each other through this and all get through this winter better than we have in the past. Going to the Doctor next week as I am having problems with my blood pressure and she wants me to lose more weight (Ha Ha). This could be a lengthly visit.

I suffer from all the symptoms discussed. I used to tan as well and yes I felt absolutely wonderful afterwards. Now with a child running to the tanning salon is a little harder. At a specific time everyday I turn all the lights on in my house. Even in the rooms I am not in. I tried the daylight bulbs, but they don't work any differently then the regular ones. This is what my doctor told me to do, but it seems every year it is getting worse.

Neece, my sis says the same thing about the tanning bed. She used to tan all the time (until she had a couple of basal cell carcinomas removed). She said the thing she misses the most about tanning is how good it made her feel! So, there must be some truth in that.

I too, as well as my mom, have always suffered from this. This year I discovered that when I go to TAN (Yikes, now we are heading into skin cancer territory) that it very much relieves the symtoms. I am not a tan-o-holic, so if I just go once or twice a week for 15-20 minutes I am good. It really does make me feel better. Especially since my office has NO windows!! I sure as heck didn't know there was medicine for it, though, and never thought about anti-depressants helping it.

Thanks for the info. I have never heard of this before. When reading the symptoms, I found that I have some of these. Next time I go see my doctor I will ask him about this. It makes sense though.

I agree with you on how you do great most of the day, then at night you cave. I am the same way.

Hi Denny,

It's more common than we think, I believe. I have been diagnosed with SAD along with clinical depression and am on meds. I also have invested in a nice phototherapy lamp to help, and so far it seems to! I make a point to get outside every single day, weather permitting. Even on cloudy days, you still get more lux than from the phototherapy lamp.

Good luck!

Yep...I have the same problem. I desperately want to hibernate. I'd sleep all day if I didn't need to pay the rent. Supposedly there are certain lamps that are supposed to help with the problem, but I sure as heck can't afford one:(

This affects me as well. I take an antidepressant all year round, but my dr. increases it around this time of year and then we back off to my normal dosage in the Spring. It helps immensely. For those who are not on an antidepressant, if you talk to your dr. and he/she feels that SAD affects your life, they can prescribe something for you temporarily for the season.

I suffer from all of the symptoms except for the heavy arm/leg thing.

I have it.

I am on meds for it, and this year I am *actually* looking forward to Christmas and not mulling over it.

It's one day at a time. This is a great team for support. I know it is difficult to stay positive with weight fluctuations, but it can be done. Are you keeping track of the food/calories a day? Exercise? It will get better and I know the holidays are around the corner with more tempting food. YIKES

(Seasonal Affective Disorder) I have just read some information on this and it seems to fit my problem. I was 204 in January and started Spark People in late February at 199. I had worked my way down to 177 in early October. Since turning the clocks back and early dark I have gone up to 186 at one point and was 183 this morning. This is not a new occurance for me as I have tried dieting different ways to the same result. Here are some of the symptoms and the first two fit me perfectly.
* A change in appetite, especially a craving for sweet or starchy foods
* Weight gain
* A heavy feeling in the arms or legs
* A drop in energy level
* Fatigue
* A tendency to oversleep
* Difficulty concentrating
* Irritability
* Increased sensitivity to social rejection
* Avoidance of social situations
I can do a great job most of the day until those last few hours when my resolve gives in. It seems late October I think I'm a bear and need to hibernate and start eating likewise. Having a real struggle here already and it isn't even Christmas.
