But I'm lucky, I don't eat the whole bag... If they added sugar... then it would be another story.

I like BBQ corn chips and BBQ potato chips. I've tried the baked but to me they taste like flour. I am making an effort to slack off of them. Maybe I'll find a better tasting baked chip????? emoticon

THATSY & MOM2MATTHEW, Even if it wasnt exactly as you suggested, it still ends up having the same result, doesnt it? I mean we end sabotaged. Or allow ourselves to be.
In my case I have even had it suggested that no one would be interested. Sadly when I do go out I do end up getting attention and then dont know what to do due to the conflicting thoughts in my brain...

The tough part will be working around the sabbotage. Do you think you could ask him if he has any concerns about you losing weight... with out accusing him of sabbotaging you?
Maybe share how you would feel if he lost weight?
I know it's rough, my hubby is overweight, but doesn't seem to mind it. He always offers to help in anyway he can. He dosn't keep chocolate candy or cookies in the house... he keeps them at work, because he knows I'll eat them. Probably cooperates because other wise he'd never see the stuff again!

THATSY - I'm sure that's part of it. Back when I was thin, I tended to be a real flirt. Didn't do anything bad, but I wasn't "starved for male attention." So I think sub-consciously he might be afriad that if I was felling & looking good, I might get that attention again and he would feel unworthy or something. He used to be a healthy weight too.

Is it possible that he is sabotaging you in a sort of passive way?
Maybe he isn't. Tt sounds like he might be okay being overweight as long as you are.
Your kinda equal that way.
But... if you lost weight, looked great and felt real good about yourself, would he then feel a little less secure about being overweight?
Just something to think about.
I could be way off here.
Only you and he really know.

My husband IS also overweight. The difference is, he doesn't care that he's overweight. His outlook is, I love hiom no matter what, so it doesn't matter what he weighs, and I should feel the same way. But my argument is, I KNOW he loves me no matter my size, but I don't love me no matter my size. And really, it's not about HIM it's about ME and being happy in my own skin. And so he's emotionally supportive, but he still brings home chips and fried foods and pizza... and even if I make healthy snacks for me, I end up giving in to what he's eating.

This topic is very frustrating to me.
If eating and emotions are not connected then Anorexia and Bulima are just figments of out imagination?
Talk about lack of empathy!
Congrats on finding a way to let it go.
I don't think I could tolerate someone who could so blatenly ignore facts just because they don't apply.
Maybe it's just to personal for me?

Hi June. It was interesting to read about your experiences with your hubby.
My husband believes absolutely that emotions and weight are NOT connected, you should be able to eat anything (any amount as well) and "just work it off".
He has never been overweight. He works out with weights mostly and has more muscle. He has no knee pain so running is still an option for him.
Anyway, we used to end up arguing about it until I joined SP and now I just let it go...
But only because I have support from SP and all of you. So Like you say, June, with all your help.......
With that I think I will go have my 2nd glass of water. 6 more to go for the day....

My husband is very suportive! He has been overweight before and lost it all by eating small meals (300 calories) 5 to 6 times a day. That worked for him in conjunction with weight training. He lost 60 pounds and I am very proud of him.

The problem comes in when he thinks that this will also work for me and he pushes me to do it too cuz it worked for him. I don't have the kind of time he devoted to it. He works from home, I don't.

He doesn't understand that when you are out in work world that you just can stop every 3 hours to eat 300 calories. Hard for me to fit it all in. I keep trying but it just doesn't work for me.

So now I told him that I appreciate his suport and love him for it but I have to do what works for me. He has conceded but doesn't understand why I won't just do what he did cuz he said that his weight loss was easy and why won't you just do the easy thing. Why make it so hard.

Now that I have found SP it has been easy so far. But it has only been 2 to 3 weeks. I know that I can do it this time with all of your help.

I have a husband who is suportive but he cannot give me simpathy in the weight department cuz hes never been overweight in his life. We had a heart to heart and I told him that there is going to be some times that I just have to get out of the house and hes gonna be stuck with the children for an hour or so so i can get my head cleared. He said as long as I need it then he cool with it. We had to come to terms with everything because we're a family and theres more than me and him. To the food thing I just take the Excellent recipes that they have here and make lil changes to make them work. I don't have the time to fix things from scratch so I'm all about quick and easy and don't feel bad about it later. So at my house we eat alot of chicken and rice. Sometimes I have to fix something for them and something for me. It all works out in the end. Hope this helps.

I too have a husband that doesn't seem too supportive. He is very thin and has never had to deal with this kind of problem. We both work very hard (I went into business for myself about 3 years ago) and my husband opted to do the cooking. He's a very good cook, but has a hard time cooking meals he can enjoy and I can eat without the guilt. Also, I have to wonder how many of us are eating alot of convenience foods, ie..lean cuisine, healthy choice, etc. that contain loads of sodium. It takes alot of extra time to eat right. It's hard for me to find the time to make foods from scratch. Any suggestions?

It hasnt worked in the past usually ending up with yet another "old" problem (like him having a problem with my weight for 10 years) coming out. So I am kinda scared to talk. I have been thinking of counselling for a while.
Lots of issues. No time. I guess that is what makes me an Emotional Eater anyway....

ROUTE-I know it would be nice to have more support from your hubby, but remember: you are doing this for YOU! I recently told my husband I wanted more support from him, because in the past he says I "obsess" about my diet, but he doesn't understand how hard it is for me. But today, he left me a really sweet note telling me he is proud of my efforts. So maybe talking to your hubby will help? :)

Thanks so much for that MOM2MATTHEW.
The sad part was having a tiff with my hubby when I got home from my weigh in.. I would have expected support. But it was actually posting and reading what everyone was saying that did not plunge me back into my usual eat-to-feel-better hole!! So thank you to all of you for being here for me.
I ended up going for a long walk to clear my head.

Hope you are hanging in there, Mom2Matthew. I think you already have excellent advice on this. I do think you will need to up your water intake to flush out the extra sodium. I'm pretty sure about that. Glad you caught it.
I added (2 lbs)the first week also, stayed steady the next week (no change at all) and only started losing the 3rd week onwards. I think it is just your body getting used to the new stuff.
I actually added exercise (gym & swimming) in the 4th week. You will need to mix it up once in a while.
Good luck. emoticon

angie281--i have been with sp since about june 06. but i have been doing weight watchers for a long time- off and on- i go through months where i really struggle and then get my act together and stay focused. right now i am so focused it is like having blinders on!!!. i had lost down to 190 and then gained 30-yes 30 lbs back so i am trying really hard to get rid of those before my birthday next march. but i am going to try to go slow and steady and really make the changes stick. sp has helped me a lot too. the friends i have made and the support during the struggles was incredible and helped me to not give up when all i thought about was how i could live in the drive thru at mcdonalds and not get into trouble. dont ever think that you are the only one going through something- trust me- if you need help post it here and you will find out that others have been there done that and are ready to help you get through it too love and hugs andra

Something to keep in mind about salt.
Not all salt is processed the same way by our bodies.
Sea salt is different then the salt that is added to our foods.
I won't bore you with the chemical differences, but basically if you want to salt your food get a box of sea salt and use it as much as you want as long as you drink aplenty of water it will naturally pass through your body.
It's the other types of salt, often called table salt that our bodies don't process normally and can cause all kinds of problems.
Lemon is a natural diuretic and will help flush stubborn sodium from your body.

Wherever you are, be there totally. If you find your here and now intolerable and it makes you unhappy, you have three options: remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it totally.

I would just continue to drink the recommended amount of water (8-12 a day - depending on weight & individual needs) and only really increase it if you are exercising. You don't want too much water b/c that can be unhealthy too. It's a process and eventually things in your body will get more normal, once it realizes that the water you are giving it is going to always come. Also our bodies have to adjust to eating healthier, so it does take time but you WILL see results if you keep sticking to it.

One thing that is interesting is that once your body is more used to a healthier lifestyle, you will find that unhealthy foods make you feel lethargic and even sick .. it just takes some time to get to that point. Now if only I could listen to my own advice .. I'm such a yo-yo dieter it isn't even funny :P

Mom2Matthew, Hang in there you can do it. We will all be here to encourage you and help you get through it. There will also be times that we will need you to encourage us.

I can relate to how you feel I started 6 days ago and I was concerned about getting on the scale so soon so I didn't get on the scale at all I decided I would wait another week. I knew that if I didn't lose or if I gain I would be discourage and want to stop.

APHILLIPS1 - How long have you been on here? I am so encouraged by your progress.

Great information everyone.

I'm the same way. Any canned veggies or lunch meat is pretty high. I love the deli select meat for a sadwhich but it's pretty high so I track it with the nutrition tracker.

I just thought once I started drinking a lot of water, it would all just flush out. LOL

I checked my sodium, and it's bad. Apparently even though I don't put salt on things, some foods are just really salty. I'm going to make sure I keep an eye on that too. Should I be drinking extra water to compensate? emoticon

Yeah I was surprised by that too. It has something to do with our body holding onto the water at first b/c it doesn't know if it will continue to not get the water but when you do start regularly drinking it and your body realizes that it isn't going to be dehydrated, then it will start to flush out all the extra and the bloating you might be experiencing will go away. I guess it's kinda like your body holding onto fat if it thinks you are going starve it.

Wow I had never heard that before. (The thing about bodies initially bloating with water) That is good to know!

Another thing .. I was talking to a trainer at my gym last week and I told her that I was feeling bigger eventhough I was eating better, drinking my water and working out and she said that sometimes when we increase our water consumption to more than what our bodies are used to, that we will tend to bloat a bit at first and feel a little bigger and weigh a little more. This will go away once our body gets used to the extra fluids. So ya never know, that may be part of it too.

I'm betting anything that it's mostly sodium. I too was up a few pounds this morning and looking back on the last couple days, although I wasn't eating too terribly "bad", I did probably consume too much salt. That means that today I will be drinking my water and staying away from anything salty. Don't get discouraged .. just keep trying as hard as you can and keep a positive attitude and you will see results eventually. One thing that really helps me not get too down on myself is by NOT paying too much attention to the numbers on the scale. How you feel and how your clothes are feeling on you are a better indicator (in my opinion) than what the scale says.

MOM-I understand your frustration. I, myself, was up 2 pounds this morning, despite eating in moderation the whole weekend. I figured the least I should've been was the same. But, I'm hoping that it's just water retention or my body continuing to change. Just keep doing what you're doing, because it WILL work. Sometimes the body is wierd, but it will adjust, with time. Water is key, so keep drinking that. And I think watching the sodium will help. I have been watching it, and it's amazing how much you can take in on a regular day without even realizing it! Hang in there ok?

I never used to drink water. Ever. I hate water. But I've been drinking it because I know I need to.

I don't think I've been taking in that much sodium, but I will check that. I'm glad you guys mentioned it. Since I wasn't watching sodium, I don't really know.

The biggest change in my lifestyle has been 1) Not eating before bed, and not snacking late at night. 2) Making the effort to drink as much water as possible. 3) staying away from the fried/greasy crap I'm used to; and 4) Not drinking as much hot chocolate/coffee.

I'm just so tired of being overweight that I guess I just want to see results NOW. Also, I want to have another baby, but I can't until I lose some weight. I have a history of miscarriages and my Dr. says I'm at risk because of my wiehgt.

I think it also depends on intesity. How much change has been made to your lifestyle. If you are someone who used to drink 4 colas a day and now, only drink water, you might notice you're not bloated anymore. If you're strength training and doing cardio and really watching what you eat then there should be improvement with in 2-3 weeks. When I started stregnth training it took 6 weeks before I noticed there was some toning going on. When I slowed down on it, I immediately saw a negative change. So, it all depends. Absolutely, though, your sodium intake should be watched b/c you will definetly retain water then.

I read and article on SP that said that it was possible to not see results for up to two weeks.

I don't want to be disappointed at my first weigh in and wanted to know that if I gained ... it was OK cuz it takes a while.

You might want to check and see how much sodium you are getting. Also, make sure that you are using the nutrition teacker to know how much you are eating. You can still gain with healthy foods.

However, I seriously doubt that you would have gained that much in such a short time, so I would guess that you are retaining water and or gas (or possibly even not enough bm's) from the whole grains and veggies. Just keep drinking water to flush your system and maybe take a gas X or a laxative if you haven't gone #2 in a while. See if that helps you feel better.

Sorry for all the gross body talk.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.

I know that if you're body hasn't been having adequate water intake then it'll hold alittle excess, causing some bloating. My friend had told me to give it 2 weeks for my system to adjust.
Don't be discouraged. It's only been a week. Just try to remember to that's your being more healthy. There's always good benefits with it.

How is it that in the 5 days since I started eating healthier and drinking more water I have gained 4 pounds instead of losing anything?

I haven't really had much chance to work out, so I know that it's not the old "muscle weighs more than fat" adage.

I'm already starting to get discouraged...
