You all just reminded me how lucky I am that I do hair for a living... you can't eat and do hair at the sametime...: )
Yet, somehow I manage to get food inbetween clients. I really eat well when I'm at work. It's on the way home and when I'm at home that I have a hard time.

I have the problem at work too and have yet to find the perfect solution. What I do now that helps some is eating things that take a while to get through like peanuts in the shells or a cup of frozen blueberries.

A little smile goes a long way.

This is a great topic. I don't have anything really to add, I am just glad that it was started.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, those will be great when I'm at home. Now, what to do when I'm at work and can't leave my desk....

Can you put on some music in the house and have everyone dance? The kids may get a kick out of it and you all may laugh (an added stress reliever)!

You are all so right. I need to just break the cycle.
Walking to the end of the block is one idea.
My daughter is the fiesty type. I think sometimes I eat because I get frustrated with her and I can't take it out on her.
Two problems with that
1. I'm punishing myself
2. I'm showing her an inappropriate way to deal with feelings.
I need some other ideas for when a walk is not an option.

I understand about walks with kids. I watch my neice (10 months) and nephew (13 months) twice a week and it is very difficult to get everything gathered to go out. Maybe you can just go outside and throw a ball around or turn on the garden hose(the cold water always wakes me up and the kids love it...I don't even have to worry about my nephew trying to walk away).

I am always trying to watch what I eat around the kids becuase I want to set a good example. I didn't have a great example for eating when I grew up so I think it is so important to do whatever little I can for them now. (They are also the reason I haven't had a cigarette in 20 months.)

I know 2 days a week is a lot easier than 24/7 so, good luck on continuing to find a food substitute when you're tired.

A little smile goes a long way.

Can you load the kids in the stroller and take a quick walk? Even just to the end of the street might be enough to break the cycle of wanting to eat. Plus you are involving the kids in a healthy way of life.

Hi Kelly!

Welcome! I like your ideas. You've come up with a good atrategy to help you past your problem eating times and I think having a plan is a big part of the battle. Being good to yourself is an excellent idea. i really like the idea of drinking water too. When you crave food have you ever found you that you are thirsty instead of hungry?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I too eat when I bored, but my other trigger is fatigue. I have two kids and a hubby who works full time and is starting his own biz. Did I mention that I work part time and my youngest is only 19 months old. I get very tired and often don't get enough sleep. I have a hard time figuring out what to do insead of eating when I'm tired and I have the kids to watch/entertain. I can't just drop everything and take a walk or work on a crossword. Someday, but not now.

I am new to this team and wanted to first say hi to everyone...HI EVERYONE! I'm Kelly and I eat when I'm bored. It's my worst habit and the most important one for me to break (now that I've quit smoking that is). I had an idea this morning of how to break this particular bad habit.

I'm sure we've all found ourselves standing in front of the refrigerator with the door wide open waiting for the commercials to be over on the TV or coming home and peeking in the cupboard to grab a bedtime snack even though you just ate dinner. Well, I certainly have...and I want to stop! So today, I decided to come up with a list of things to do instead of eating when Iím bored. Here are some of my ideas and Iím hoping you all are able to help me add to the list:

-Water the houseplants
-Drink a glass of icy water
-Work on a crossword puzzle
-Organize the grocery bags (you know, the pile of paper and plastic bags next to the fridge)
-Create individual servings of food for lunches and snacks
-Call your sister/friend
-Post on SparkPeople
-Organize the Tupperware
-Put away music CDs
-Walk around the block
-Read a positive/motivating article
-Plan a hike with a friend

A little smile goes a long way.
