Midnight hot dogs? All I can think the dark meat contains is iron. Cream of Wheat provides 90% of daily iron. Maybe it will help?

I am about to go nuts with this sinus crud. I feel as if I cannot be here for everyone. I do not do well with headaches. Very hard for me to think. Sorry...

midnight hotdogs strike again. What the heck? I dont even like hotdogs, only buy them for the carnivores. At 12:30, I woke up hot, sweaty, suspecting low blood sugar and instead of testing and reaching for a glucose tablet, I ate three hotdogs, cold, right from the package. I wish my kids would understand that we can't have them in the house. I counted it, blew yesterday's calories out the water. There is some wierd need that eating in the dark mets, I wish I could figure out what it is so I could met it someother way.

hi Ladies,

I have bad such a severe headache I just could not check in.

Slada, I have very high risk factors also. I was not sure what to do about it and that is where the nutritional counseling came in. I saw a nutritionist and learned how I needed to eat. You can take charge and reduce your risk factors! Eating right and exercising are the keys. You can do this!

We can all do this!!!!

Each day we begin again.

I'm feeling better, but the sinus yuck and cold has killed my taste buds. Its easy not to piece when everything taste the same, yuck!

I am finding that I crave protein, with both high and low blood sugar. When I feel crappy, it's an excuse to eat hot dogs!so the challenge for me is to stop eating after my third little protein snack. We'll see how it goes.

Hi and welcome MRSKATEDUVALL!

I am so glad you came here to join us. Read through all the treads so you know what the forum is about and what others have posted that helped. You helped me to realize that it would be nice to have a post for new people that is a recap of all previously said. But, we don't. YET!

My trick to prevent the mindless eating was to increase my protein intake. Being vegetarian, I incorporated a whey powder protein drink. More than 30 grams of protein is stored as fat so I keep to 30 grams per meal. The whey I have is 26 grams so I usually have it in a cup of coffee as a snack.

The other easy trick is to eat whole grains and high fiber foods. They keep you full longer and sustain even blood sugar levels. I also try to eat every 3-4 hours. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and mid afternoon snack. Hard, firm rule of no eating after 8pm. It took me awhile to adopt this schedule but I feel so much better now and started losing weight when I did. I also follow the SP meal plans.

Please post any comments or questions you have. Oh, sleeping pills were designed for short term use so the body does habituate to them.

Hugs to you and welcome again!

Each day we begin again.

I want to join this thread, because I can so relate to the first post by AuntBee. I struggle with night eating, eating after bed, in bed, in the dark.. Things that I wouldn't eat during the day. I never know how to track it.. is it my third snack? is it an early breakfast? Since joining Spark, I have tracked it, and I am consistently blowing my calorie range out of the water, thus I haven't lost any significant weight. ( I had lost 20 lbs before spark, and I have lost and gained the last 10.) So..I am reaching out for help. What things work? My doctor has prescribed a sleep aid, and that helped in the beginning, but now I think my body has adjusted to that dosage, and I wake up again. I read on Spark ideas to put the leftovers away before you sit down to dinner, that will help, as I tend to eat if we have leftovers sitting out... a better plan would be to cook for smaller meals, and not have leftovers!

Hi Auntbee, Slada, Flyingpigs, Jae and all others!

First off, Auntbee, I am so proud of you to figure out what is not working and to make adjustments to what will work for you. Yes, carbs can be sneaky lil pests! Eating them does create cravings for more. Which is why the whole grain aspect is important and to eat whole grains with a low fat item like peanut butter (ONE teaspoon) as the protein and fat help the brain to release the I-feel-full messages.

Slada, ask your cardiologist for a diet to follow. Ask about the 40-30-30 diet. Look it up online prior to going in case you have questions about it. Eating right is all about learning to make the right choices and educating yourself on what you need to eat to be a healthy you. Eating right also means taking responsibility to teach yourself what you need to know in order to eat the way you need for your health. Most cardiologists understand this and have information available. Just talk to your doctor and ask for help. Then, open your mind to learn new ways of eating and do be your own best friend and take care of yourself by doing what you need to do to be healthy. We can support you with words but it is up to you to take actions to help yourself. Success comes when we commit to doing what we need to do to make the changes necessary for a healthier life. While making these changes may be challenging, no one has died from making the changes. However, not making changes can cause death when it comes to medical conditions. So, as the saying goes, put on your bug girl panties and ask questions and learn and commit to being your own best friend. You are worth it. We all are worth it!

Love to all! I am so proud of each of you!

Each day we begin again.

Hello everyone,
Guess it's about time I check in and give an account of my behavior...
First of all, welcome "FLYINGPIGS165", nice to have you join us on this thread. You will find GREAT support here in your struggles with healthy eating.

Jae, nice to see you back again. So happy that you now have control over your night time eating. Thanks for the tip about your tea, I found it very helpful. Not for tea as such, because I am not a tea drinker; but, I like my vanilla steamer; so I followed your suggestion, made the steamer, put it in a small thermos cup so it wouldn't cool off too quick and sipped it for the longest time. I found it very satisfying and it took care of my cravings for carbs.

As for me, I am doing good. I am very pleased with myself; even though I have slipped up many times. I have changed my eating habits and the time of the day that I eat them. I don't eat after dinner anymore. I found that when I would eat carbs after dinner; then in most cases I would be craving more all night long.

So here is my new record:

I got disapointed last time after not seeing to much results and this time I am here but I don't have any motivation, only YOU my friends emoticon
I am not sure how long I will last this time,I don't even have meal plan for tomorrow.
I am very scary because I am seeing my cardiologist tomorrow because I stop using cholesterol pills long time ago and I gain lot of weight from his last visit.
If my cholesterol is to high again and my cardiac marker,I will not have other option than be hungry and try to lose weight, because I don't even know what should I eat this time.
I love you all a lot emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi everyone! I miss hanging out here. The no-nighttime eating is doing great. I have a slip every now and then, but things are much different than they were a few months ago.

I wanted to share a habit that is really working for me. At nighttime, about 7 pm, after dinner, I make a mug of my favorite herbal tea. I add 2 pkts of stevia, and drink it over the next hour.

It's working well to help me feel full and content. The warmth of the tea really helps, so I know it will work this winter. And what's more, I used to be a night binger, with cookies, etc. I haven't done that as much because the tea feels better and satisfies that part of me.

I've picked up some great tips from all of you, so I want to return the favor. Hope this is helpful for someone. Hugs to Nesarian, Aunt Bee and everyone here!

Hope your day is wonderful!

Jae

Thanks for the welcome, Nesarian! I guess the eating is a reward for making it through the day and it is linked to a relaxing feeling. Sort of calming yourself with food when you are upset. I suppose that if I was rubbing my feet to relax, it would occupy my hands so I wouldn't be eating..LOL!!

Hi Flyingpigs and a warm welcome to you! So glad you are here! You have some sound strategies already and seem to know your triggers. Of all the things I use food for, relaxing is not one of them! Would you mind sharing with us what it is about food that is connected to relaxing for you? To me relaxing is massaging my feet!
Again, welcome!

Hello all! This is my first posting to this thread. I have read back a few days and realized that you are all on the same page as myself with that dang addictive behavior. I have a compulsion to eat after dinner time every night and, like some of you, it is linked to an activity like reading or watching TV. I too just want to relax at the end of the day and reward myself. I have not gotten to the point where I can give up eating anything after a certain hour. Things I have tried that usually work (if I decide to give it a good try) are........keeping my hands occupied while I read or watch TV. Knitting is my friend here. Another is planning my night time foods that I can eat . A favorite is whipped cottage cheese with some powdered sald dressing mixed in and veggies to dip or popcorn which I only eat 1 piece at a time to make it last longer.
When I was attending Overeaters Anonymous, a great piece of advice was to sit with your craving for 10 minutes before giving in. After that time, the craving usually goes away.

God is in control

Auntbee, I hope you are relaxing today! I am preparing for son's visit tomorrow. I forgot to weigh again yesty so did this morning and am still the same 151. I guess this gives my body time to slowly adjust to weight loss so I do not get stretch marks and the like.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Hugs to all!

Good evening all! My goodness, I have to cop to making a blunder. I love this thread so much and it is a team to me, in my heart, so I really messed up by not taking the time to think this through.
I am so sorry for misleading anyone. The REAL team leaders are awesome. But. our Auntbee is someone so special and a leader in the true sense of the word. But, I will get it right and refer to this as a thread from now on. Sheesh. So much for speaking from my heart without thinking!

Ok, that is cleared up.

Now, as Auntbee said, this is a work in progress for her and us all. Maybe it would help if the challenges we face are posted and what we do about them and feedback form others could help to guide us all to new perspectives and possibly a path to follow to success.

For me, I am not indulging in eating at night. I have a firm cutoff point and am not eating beyond it til morning. My challenge is still emotional eating. I become anxious and hungry. It feels like real hunger but I just ate breakfast so chances are darn good I am just anxious. Upping my protein intake helps avoid this but I get busy and do not always make my protein shake. I guess I better put out the effort and just have a protein shake every morning. I will let you a ll know if this helps.

What do you all do with challenges?

Each day we begin again.

Hello SHERIGUS & welcome!! Sorry I haven't replied sooner, I have been so busy! I told someone today that I have been running around like a chicken with it's head cut off..LOL.

First of all, I need to clarify something. NESARIAN said, (bless her heart), and I quote, "This is indeed an awesome team. Auntbee is the leader and I am her assistant."
What NESARIAN meant is that I started this thread to help people and myself to break this Night Time Eating Syndrone, one and for all, and I asked her to be my asst., to help me out because it was almost impossible for me to reply to all the posts; plus I went on vacation for a month. We are not the leaders of this group, "Emotional Eaters", they have FANTASTIC leaders, we are just helping out in this particular thread. I hope I have made myself clear :-)

You can conqueror this night time eating as many others have. Strange I know, that I started this thread and I haven't been able to get rid of this dirty habit; but, I will.....No one has tried and failed anymore times than I have; but, my time is coming and so is yours. I did 21 nights straight and then one night I was feeling like I wanted to eat. I thought, one night won't matter; but it did matter because the next night it was easier to give in and before I knew it I was back to square one.

I am VERY happy to report that I am doing really, really good and I am proud of myself. I want to say a GREAT big than you to Nesarian who has been very understanding, patient and kind to me. Without her I wouldn't be this far.

emoticon emoticon emoticon
I hope to be posting in the morning that I had another GREAT night!

See I am proof that you haven't failed until you fail to try again.

Good night everyone!!
Big Hugssss,
Auntbee

Hi Sheri and a warm welcome to you! Sorry to hear you lost your husband. Hugs to you.

This is an awesome team. Auntbee is the leader and I am her assistant. People stop by and gain skills and move on to deal with other challenges. This is quite the challenging journey! With many aspects. Night time eating is challenging for so many. doing well all day is common. Sun goes down and BAMM! Out comes the food monster! What helped me was to up my protein intake with whey powder. It keeps me satiated. Making sure to have good fats with each meal helps also. I have an ironclad rule about not eating after 8pm. I sleep better without a full tummy and my GERD is gone now also. I really can find no good reason to eat at night now!

Please feel free to ask any questions or state what your needs are for support. The collective intelligence on this board is very helpful! I look forward to getting to know you better!

Each day we begin again.

Hi All,
I'm new to SparkPeople, and this seemed like a good team to join. I'm building a new routine for myself as a widow. I can eat pretty healthy throughout the day, but when I sit down at night to relax, I feel like "rewarding" myself and I relax with food. Can anybody else identify with that?
I like to read, but have a bad habit of snacking when I read, so I stopped reading for a while. I also do sewing and crafts, which help with the snacking... but many nights I'm weary after a day at work, and I just want to relax.
I got some good ideas out of this topic already - popcorn, baby carrots, etc., but would appreciate any other ideas.

This seems like a good team, and I"m looking forward to going on this journey with all of you!

Hey NESARIAN,
Holding real tight on my saddle (LOL) as I read what you are saying to Slada and myself.Very GREAT advice!! Slada no one has tried and failed as many times as I have; but I'm not about to give up. I feel bad enough when I try and fail, I would feel miserable if I didn't pick myself up and try again. Besides, you haven't really failed until you fail to try again. Giving up is not an option young lady; so, you get your little butt emoticon back here and begin again.
You are a very special person and you CAN do this. On your own? Maybe not; but, with friends like us who care enough to talk to you and to pray for you, you'll do it. We believe in you, now start believing in yourself!
Big Hugssssss,
Auntbee

Miss Slada!
Now, hold on, honey! I have been trying to lose weight for four months now. Yes, I have lost 11 pounds. If I gave up, I would not have lost any. NEVER EVER EVER GIVE UP! Losing weight takes times. Oh, so much time. But, if we give up we never lose anything.
If you think your pills no longer work, go see your doctor. No point suffering when you do not have to. You are worthy of happiness. You are worthy of feeling good about yourself.
So, pick yourself back up, shake off the blues, call your doctor and do what you need to take care of you. No one can do it for you. We all have slip ups. Ask Auntbee. She comes back and tries again. And again. and again. So can you. Again and again. And, again. Whatever it takes. You can do it. We all do it everyday.
Go to the SP sites and make your plan and start working it. If this were easy, SP would not be here for all of us to learn from and to support us in our daily efforts!
You can do this! I know you can.
hugs!

Each day we begin again.

Ah, Sweet Auntbee, you are so loving and caring and always willing to help others. The wife is so lucky to have you. It must be tough to be in this situation. I am so sorry this lady foes not have a supportive family. So sad. I am sure she appreciates your support , as we all do.

Thank you for your kind words. I seem to be in a pattern of losing a pound a week on average. I so thought I would have lost 30# by now. Oh well. I look and feel much better now and that is worth more than a number. I love being able to ride the bike and no longer hit my stomach with my thigh as I pedal. I still have too much belly but it is shrinking. I tell all younger women to never gain weight as it is unbelievable slow to lose in middle age. I was determined to follow that plan. Then, menopause attacked and it was pure survival. so glad to be in this stage of my life.

Auntbee, email me if you want to chat. I promise to check daily in case you do.

I think for you to be holding your own while going thru this hospital stuff is amazing. I think we can cross stress eater off for you!

Many hugs to you and thanks for checking in. Been lonely here lately!

Each day we begin again.

Hahahaha NESARIAN, I am here..Not in good spirits but I am here. I have spent most of the week at the hospital. I mentioned in an earlier post that I was doing home Care, well the man I work with is on life support and I have been there with his wife. She doesn't have a very supporting family and she so needed me.
I haven't been doing too bad with my healthy eating despite everything that is going on.
I see you are doing so well, down to 151 pounds, that is FANTASTIC!! So proud of you and your will power.
Thanks for all your caring and encouragement!! I SO appreciate you!

Hi Ladies!
Great advice, Auntbee. Isolating is never healthy. Doing for others is a great way to get out of ourselves and think more of others.
I totally forgot to weigh in today! I have been crazy busy lately and forgot it was Friday even.
hopefully, I can weight tomorrow.
I have faith in both you ladies. I have faith in you, Auntbee. I have faith in you, Slada. I have faith in myself. We each have the power to do what we need. It may not feel like it at times. But, the strength is there in each of us!

Grow your faith, Ladies! We each deserve to live healthy and happy lives. emoticon

Each day we begin again.

Hello SLADA69, fellow Canadian emoticon ! Thanks for your words of encouragement to me. It's AWESOME that you would be fighting such a battle and yet want to be there for me and for others. That shows me that you are a very kind, caring person.

As for the depression, you aren't alone, there are thousands out there like you. I was one of them; but with much prayer, and self talk thank God I am no longer there. When you described yourself, I saw me 6 years ago. It isn't very easy; but we have to get ourselves up and out of the house. I would go to the grocery store, would be there less than five minutes and I would have to run home to my safety zone, which was my home. I would go to church and before it started I would run home. The next Sunday I went again and was able to stay until the meeting began. I kept doing that until I was able to stay for a whole meeting. I had myself almost walked to death; but it worked. I would wake up with that terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, force myself out of bed and walk and pray and sing for 9 km almost every day. By the time I got back home that old feeling was gone. The worse thing in the world is to stay away from people. Yes, stay away from those who are negative; but surround yourself with positive people. People who make you feel good. I am doing Home Care for an elderly couple 11 hours a week and I love it. It gets me outside the house. You will pull yourself out of this. I believe in the power of Prayer and I'm going to ask God to bring you out of that despair called depression. I believe in you as well and you are going to be eating healthy and feeling much better about yourself. One other thing too, don't talk negative about yourself, talk positive. We become what we say we will become, we cripple ourselves by talking that way. Say, "I am going to get out of this depression. I will be healthy, I will be happy, I will be the kind of person I envision myself to be. I am special!! God made me just the way He wanted me. There isn't another person in the whole world that is exactly like me."

As for sweets, I have a lovely recipe for a muffin that is very healthy and it makes me feel very full. I eat one after dinner with a glass of milk and it satisfies my craving for sweets.
Actually I got the recipe here on SparkPeople. Here is the link:

http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-de
tail.asp?recipe=949047

It calls for buttermilk; but I always add 1 tbsp of vinegar to the skim milk and wait for 5 minutes or so for it to thicken. Some people use Lemon Juice instead of the vinegar.

They are delicious and very satisfying!

Hang in there, Nesarian and I are rooting for you!
Big Hugss,
Auntbee

Good afternoon NESARIAN! Thanks once again for your pep talk, (LOL), it is really helping. After reading what you wrote it really made me want to beat this habit. I did a search as well on Night Time eating and discovered there are many, many people who suffer in that area. One persons suggestion was to put marbles around the bed to break the habit....LOL...I didn't do that; but, I did take my New Testament, (Bible), to bed with me and told God that I was standing on His promises and asked Him for deliverance. Guess what?????
emoticon emoticon 2 nights with no night time eating!!!! Hope you have a WONDERFUL day, you sure deserve it emoticon

Hi Auntbee,
We had a power outage so I am just now getting on here.

Ok, so you feel you have a food addiction. What is important to you to do about it? What are you willing to do to change?

I use a whey powder from Target. It is their World Market brand and is sweetened with Splenda. I consider it healthy or I would not drink it! I make up a drink and drink some at a time or all at once. It has 25 grams of protein and more than 30 grams per meal is too much and is turned to fat so be sure you do not add it to a meal without counting protein grams.

I believe in you, Auntbee! Hugs!

Each day we begin again.
