We had plans to see the movie Jan 4th when we had to go to the town where it plays but we both woke up on the 2nd with a cold. Hers lasted 24 days, mine 28 day and by the time we were well enough to go out to a movie, it was no longer playing... emoticon

Very disappointed of not getting the chance to see it in a theater and now having to wait for the DVD... emoticon

And we still have not had a chance to go see the movie. But then it is an hour away from us; one problem with living so remote. Need a free afternoon and none this week, maybe next week... emoticon

I've seen it twice now and thought it held up to a second viewing very well. Yes, it's necessary to let go of preconceptions, but it's a well-told story.

Have not seen the movie yet but based on what is mentioned here and elsewhere about extra material added to the first movie, it is obvious it is intended the stretch the book that should be one movie to three long movies so they can make more money off the project. Not saying that is a bad thing for those of us that love the book(s), as long as they stay close to the story line.

Here's my conclusion about the extra material: Those who have never read the books but saw the Lord of the Rings trilogy will appreciate the additions because some illuminate parts of the first movies and tie all four together. Though having never read the books, they would not know that The Hobbit is significantly less fleshed-out than the three volumes of LOTR, some of the side stories help bring the level of detail up to the standard set by the LOTR movies, which is a good thing for mainstream audiences who come into seeing the film with high expectations. On this point, I think serious Tolkien fans should be glad, too, because much of the extra material is drawn from or at least influenced by his other works, so it is true to the larger mythology of Middle Earth.

It seems that the people who are least satisfied with The Hobbit movie are those who liked Jackson's previous attempts, have read just the "core four" books, and are annoyed that the script isn't a line-for-line adaptation of what they know as the story. This is pretty sad, and demonstrates a lack of understanding of how Tolkien worked and how this amazing world took shape -- a rich history and a life of its own -- over the course of decades.

That said, I don't really get why Christopher Tolkien is so mad about everything, other (possibly) than that the franchise has made people who aren't him and his kin lots and lots of money, and that he's old and maybe a little fussy. In my memory, the LOTR movies were wonderfully done, and having recently rewatched them, I can say I still feel the same. But, The Hobbit is astonishingly beautiful, lovingly acted, and even more well-produced. It is one of very few examples of 3D done the right way -- it takes full advantage of depth of field, and uses no cheap "something suddenly flies toward the camera" shots. The more I see it (three times now), the more I enjoy it. (And I can finally tell which dwarf is which, lol.)

I saw it in 3D Friday night and loved it. Beautifully done. And the soundtrack is fantastic (Great writing music, which is what I use all of my LOTR soundtracks for.) Yes, there were some parts that were a little padded for my taste, but it's been a LONG time since I read the book, too...and I was pleasantly surprised that not ALL the dwarves were ugly. Can't complain about Kili and Thorin, lol. (And yes, the Great Goblin's chin DID look like a part of male anatomy. That made me laugh!)

emoticon Have discovered a 4-part web series called "A Simple Walk to Mordor."

Two die hard fans of LotR, who happen to work for a gaming site called RoosterTeeth, go to New Zealand to walk from the site where Hobbiton was filmed in Matamata to the site of Mt. Doom at Mount Ngauruhoe, a distance of 120 miles (200 km).

2 episodes are up as of today (Dec. 16).

I'd never make it through all five formats, because we are traveling soon and it just isn't going to happen! We have to take whatever 3D we get tomorrow at 5:40, so that there is time to get up Tuesday morning and get to work without being exhausted--I have two court appearances in two different cities that morning, so have to be at least a LITTLE bit awake!

We're trying for all five formats, too, but the nearest IMAX 3D HFR is three hours away -- BOO! So far, have done regular and standard 3D, doing IMAX 3D tonight, and HFR 3D sometime this week. Totally worthwhile "quest," lol.

Rheyn, I completely agree about Azog. It is definitely added to pad out the story and make it into three movies, but it's handled in an uncharacteristically ham-handed way.

Going to try and see it tomorrow in 3D at the higher frame rate and see how that looks. I will report back!

We (husband, sister, friend, and I) saw it last night, too, and all loved it. I like most of the changes and additional material, especially the Radagast parts, but I'm on the fence about the Azog side story. Without giving anything away, I can say that while it does create more opportunity for suspense and action (and therefore excitement and surprise for those already familiar with the story), the characterization and implementation are unimpressively conventional and "Hollywood."

I completely agree that Martin Freeman is PERFECT, and the rest of the cast is fantastic, as well. So many people I LOVE are in this movie, and it's nice that they didn't ugly up Aidan Turner too much to play Kili -- he's too pretty to hide behind lots of makeup and prosthetic face parts, lol!

Non-spoiler WARNING: the Great Goblin's chin looks like male anatomy. Just sayin'. (GROSS.)

Oh Wow! It doesn't look like it's coming to a theatre near me until Boxing Day..ugh! Oh you guys don't having Boxing Day in America, it's the day after Christmas Day...26th December.

My eyes aren't really crash hot either so I'll have to wait for the 2D version to reach our shores. Gee, we're only 1500 miles from where they made the film, one would think we would see it on the release day in Tasmania. Never mind, I still look forward to THE day!

Well, I saw The Hobbit last night. I really liked it! I'm still not convinced that there is three movies worth of material there, and there were a couple things they added to pad out the story, but it was beautiful, moved right along, and Martin Freeman was wonderful as Bilbo.

I'm extra-thrilled because a local theater is showing a LotR marathon on December 8--all three extended cut movies on the big screen! It will be a great way to get back into the world before The Hobbit!!
