I agree with you that taking pictures of our own walks would really add. I was out one rainy day that had some lovely shots, but I never remember the camera. Thank you for the information on "The Last Ringbearer." I'm posting miles on the November miles thread. So glad you joined us. shirley

This is sort of a reply to SimplyAbundant's post of 9-23-15 regarding new landmarks.
There is a free online book called "The Last Ringbearer" that might give you more ideas on landmarks near the southern edges of Tolkien's maps, as most of the activity takes place near Ithilien and the countries and waters south of Mordor. .
The Last Ringbearer is VERY well written by a Russian fan of LOTR (a geologist!), and takes the perspective that history is written by the winners and literally demonizes the losers. This book takes up the story of 2 Orcs trying to get back home after the destruction of the Ring, and their (and their unexpected allies) being tasked with ... and that would give the story away. But it dovetails and supports very nicely what we know of the events of LOTR-- just from the losing side's point of view. The book will certainly give one plenty to think about as one walks, such as what economic and social pressures drive countries into war, how the bits of society that Tolkien didn't write about may have worked in Middle-Earth, and underscores the idea that history morphs into folktale and myth. What gets in there depends on who is writing it..

Hmm. I should be taking photos on my walks, as a little bit of Middle Earth can be found anywhere if one looks hard enough. If I had been tracking my miles since the first of summer, I'd be at Bombadil's or close to it. But I'm starting with this week's walks. I should be running into the first Black Rider soon, I think (gotta check the book). Appropriate as it's Halloween! Oops, I see I have a lot farther to go before I encounter that first Rider! I'd best get a'walkin'.

You have walked 11.66 miles.
You have passed Last View of Hobbiton.
It is 6.34 miles to the next landmark.
You have 446.34 miles to reach Rivendell.

As they began to climb its first slopes they looked back and saw the lamps in Hobbiton far off twinkling in the gentle valley of the Water. Soon it disappeared in the folds of the darkened land, and was followed by Bywater beside its grey pool. When the light of the last farm was far behind, peeping among the trees, Frodo turned and waved a hand in farewell.

You have 245.21 miles to reach Parth Galen.

On the eastern bank to their left they saw long formless slopes stretching up and away toward the sky; brown and withered they looked, as if fire had passed over them, leaving no living blade of green: an unfriendly waste without even a broken tree or a bold stone to relieve the emptiness. They had come to the Brown Lands that lay, vast and desolate, between Southern Mirkwood and the hills of the Emyn Muil. What pestilence or war or evil deed of the Enemy had so blasted all that region even Aragorn could not tell.

The hobbits led their ponies up, winding round and round until they reached the top. There they stood and gazed about them. The air was gleaming and sunlit, but hazy; and they could not see to any great distance. Near at hand the mist was now almost gone; though here and there it lay in hollows of the wood, and to the south of them, out of a deep fold cutting right across the Forest, the fog still rose like steam or wisps of white smoke

I think one leader did stop by my page. I'll try asking them if they will change it. Good idea not to post until the scene changes with the barrow downs info. I haven't checked the walk to Mordor.

Hi ~

I created that September 2015 thread, but since I was the only one posting there, I came back here.

I'm posting my mileage every 2-3 days. Since my scene doesn't change but once every 40-60 miles or so, if I waited until a new landmark to post, I might not be posting but once a month. I know it gets repetitious, but I post anyway because it keeps me accountable.

I think that we're all kind of making it up as we go along without an active leader.

I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do when I've gone as far as the landmarks go... There's a team that is walking to Mordor, and I wonder if anyone knows how they are describing their landmarks. Is there another source besides the Barrows-Downs one?

HAPPYWALKER, I agree with what you said above about how helpful it would be to get rid of some of the stickies on topics that are dated. I think the leader has to do that though. Have you had any contact with any of the leaders who have become inactive to know whether they are interested in becoming active again? Maybe now that there are more of us they might resurface?

Congratulations CANDYLYNNBLUE on the 300 miles. Weathertop is a milestone for sure.
You have walked 88 miles.
You have passed The Bonfire Glade.
It is 10 miles to the next landmark.
You have 370 miles to reach Rivendell.

'I don't know what stories you mean,' Merry answered. 'If you mean the old bogey-stories Fatty's nurses used to tell him, about goblins and wolves and things of that sort, I should say no. At any rate I don't believe them. But the Forest is queer. Everything in it is very much more alive, more aware of what is going on, so to speak, than things are in the Shire. And the trees do not like strangers. They watch you. They are usually content merely to watch you, as long as daylight lasts, and don't do much. Occasionally the most unfriendly ones may drop a branch, or stick a root out, or grasp at you with a long trailer. But at night things can be most alarming, or so I am told. I have only once or twice been in here after dark, and then only near the hedge. I thought all the trees were whispering to each other, passing news and plots along in an unintelligible language; and the branches swayed and groped without any wind. They do say the trees do actually move, and can surround strangers and hem them in. In fact long ago they attacked the Hedge: they came and planted themselves right by it, and leaned over it. But the hobbits came and cut down hundreds of trees, and made a great bonfire in the Forest, and burned all the ground in a long strip east of the Hedge. After that the trees gave up the attack, but they became very unfriendly. There is still a wide bare space not far inside where the bonfire was made.'

I have to get some miles in today. I can't stay in the same place any longer!! Lol. I have been sick. I have had a stomach bug and PMS. So, I haven't been able to eat, which in turn has kept me from exercising. I am feeling 85% better this morning, though, so hopefully can get a few miles this evening :)

Have a great day!

At last they came to a narrow gate in a thick hedge. Nothing could be seen of the house in the dark: it stood back from the lane in the middle of a wide circle of lawn surrounded by a belt of low trees inside the outer hedge. Frodo had chosen it, because it stood in an out-of-the-way corner of the country, and there were no other dwellings close by. You could get in and out without being noticed. It had been built a long while before by the Brandybucks, for the use of guests, or members of the family that wished to escape from the crowded life of Brandy Hall for a time. It was an old-fashioned countrified house, as much like a hobbit-hole as possible: it was long and low, with no upper storey; and it had a roof of turf, round windows, and a large round door.

The other two ran quickly to the left and down into a little hollow not far from the road. There they lay flat. Frodo hesitated for a second: curiosity or some other feeling was struggling with his desire to hide. The sound of hoofs drew nearer. Just in time he threw himself down in a patch of long grass behind a tree that overshadowed the road. Then he lifted his head and peered cautiously above one of the great roots.

The other two ran quickly to the left and down into a little hollow not far from the road. There they lay flat. 'Thus he came to the battle of the Field of Celebrant, for that was the name of the green land that lay between Silverlode and Limlight. There the northern army of Gondor was in peril. Defeated in the Wold and cut off from the south, it had been driven across the Limlight, and was then suddenly assailed by the Orc-host that pressed it towards the Anduin. All hope was lost when, unlooked for, the Riders came out of the North and broke upon the rear of the enemy. Then the fortunes of battle were reversed, and the enemy was driven with slaughter over Limlight. Eorl, led his men in pursuit, and so great was the fear that went before horsemen of the North that the invaders of the Wold were also thrown into panic, and the Riders hunted them over the plains of Calenardhon.'

After some time they crossed the Water, west of Hobbiton, by a narrow plank-bridge. The stream was there no more than a winding black ribbon, bordered with leaning alder-trees. A mile or two further south they hastily crossed the great road from the Brandywine Bridge; they were now in the Tookland and bending south-eastwards they made for the Green Hill Country.

Little of all this, of course, reached the ears of ordinary hobbits. But even the deafest and most stay-at-home began to hear queer tales; and those whose business took them to the borders saw strange things. The conversation in The Green Dragon at Bywater, one evening in the spring of Frodo's fiftieth year, showed that even in the comfortable heart of the Shire rumours had been heard, though most hobbits still laughed at them.

Upon the west to their right the land was treeless also, but it was flat, and in many places green with wide plains of grass. On this side of the River they passed forests of great reeds, so tall that they shut out all view to the west, as the little boats went rustling by along their fluttering borders. Their dark withered plumes bent and tossed in the light cold airs, hissing softly and sadly. Here and there through openings Frodo could catch sudden glimpses of rolling meads, and far beyond them hills in the sunset, and away on the edge of sight a dark line, where marched the southernmost ranks of the Misty Mountains.

Aww, seems that when I took my break everyone else did as well! Boooo! I'm going to start keeping track again, anyway.

You have walked 78 miles.
You are at The Bonfire Glade.
It is 20 miles to the next landmark.
You have 458 miles to reach Rivendell.

And the walk continues!

You have walked 66 miles.
You are at Buckleberry Ferry.
It is 7 miles to the next landmark.
You have 458 miles to reach Rivendell.

They turned down the Ferry lane, which was straight and well-kept and edged with large white-washed stones. In a hundred yards or so it brought them to the river-bank, where there was a broad wooden landing-stage. A large flat ferry-boat was moored beside it. The white bollards near the water's edge glimmered in the light of two lamps on high posts. Behind them the mists in the flat fields were now above the hedges; but the water before them was dark, with only a few curling wisps like steam among the reeds by the bank. There seemed to be less fog on the further side.

I've managed about 23 miles since I last posted. I always forget to update on here though. Getting too reliant on my phone app!

You have walked 505 miles.
You have passed Wild Country Path.
It is 20 miles to the next landmark.
You have 417 miles to reach Caras Galadon.

At the Ford of Bruinen they left the Road and turning southwards went on by narrow paths among the folded lands. Their purpose was to hold this course west of the Mountains for many miles and days.

I really need to start remembering to wear my step tracker.

You have walked 28 miles.
You have passed Black Rider Stopping Place.
It is 18 miles to the next landmark.
You have 430 miles to reach Rivendell.

The eagles are flying me very slowly. (Actually, I'm having a bout of something that is not the flu but is making me miserable.) Only 3 miles since my last check-in.

I'm finally focused on my steps rather than my exercise, so I figured I would start posting my progress in here. emoticon

You have walked 19.5 miles.
You have passed Green Hill Country.
It is 7.5 miles to the next landmark.
You have 438.5 miles to reach Rivendell.

Didn't realize it had been so long since I posted my progress,

I have gone a total of 132.5 miles
Return to Great East Road (ca.5:30). Tom departs. Strider sees them, but hides.

I am just outside of Bree to the Prancing Pony ( should reach it by the end of today)

So sorry for your loss Miss G. I lost my Mum a couple of years ago, it's ok to wander in the wilderness for a while. Sometimes it's what we need. You'll find the path again when the time is right. emoticon

You have walked 492 miles.
You have passed Wild Country Path.
It is 33 miles to the next landmark.

I fear I have been wandering with the orcs. My mother died a month ago today, and I feel like I've been on autopilot since then. I know I've walked, but I haven't kept any track. I haven't had the energy for social media. I'm only just feeling like I can get back on Spark People. I hope the feeling sticks.

Hope you are all doing well.

It would seem that I got stuck within the hedgerows, when I was suppose to be following them ... I say this, because the last time I did any walking (how embarrassing) was back on the 3rd of November; so let's see if I can get unstuck & get headed in the correct direction.

I joined the group in Dec 2012, so it's taken nearly 2 years, although I had 6 months off due to illness. So around 18 months I guess. I'm hoping the next leg will be quicker now that I'm back to full health.

20 miles this week:

You have walked 467 miles.
You have passed Rivendell.
It is 13 miles to the next landmark.
You have 455 miles to reach Caras Galadon.

Frodo woke and found himself lying in bed. At first he thought that he had slept late, after a long unpleasant dream that still hovered on the edge of memory. Or perhaps he had been ill? But the ceiling looked strange; it was flat, and it had dark beams richly carved. He lay a little while longer looking at patches of sunlight on the wall, and listening to the sound of a waterfall.

Oh, hello Lisa emoticon

10 miles in total yesterday and today.

You have walked 442 miles.
You have passed Fords of Bruinen.
It is 16 miles to the next landmark.
You have 16 miles to reach Rivendell.

At that moment there came a roaring and a rushing: a noise of loud waters rolling many stones. Dimly Frodo saw the river below him rise, and down along its course there came a plumed cavalry of waves. White flames seemed to Frodo to flicker on their crests and he half fancied that he saw amid the water white riders upon white horses with frothing manes. The three Riders that were still in the midst of the Ford were overwhelmed: they disappeared, buried suddenly under angry foam. Those that were behind drew back in dismay.
