Been practicing jumprope for several years now. But I'm quite new to the this chat group. It's been my favorite exercise since it picked up. Buddy Lee is my favorite of all time. He has done a lot to commercialize jumprope training http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoQ7yPwmK8s
. I like it for the variety of movements. It quickly wears me out because it requires fast aerobic workout. I have posted some armature recordings of myself jumping on my facebook. I learned everything so far by practicing youtube videos, Sparkpeople, and some DVD's I purchased. I'll accept friends ships from members of this group find me by using my name John S Watson and college I graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT).
I've been on sparkpeople since 2008 and mostly used it to learn and organize exercise routines. I started while attending WIT for an engineering degree. I graduated in 2011. While living in Boston I also participated in a running group and aerobice group. The informal running group that leaves out of the city sports on the east BU campus and the exercis ministry of Morning Star Baptist Church. Prior to sparkpeople I did exercise for fun but lacked in practicing organized exercise routines that progressively challenged me. You can also friend me on my sparkpeople page WATSONJ31.

OK, I finally found out what burpee jump is. LOL. It's what we called Starburst. Yes, that's a good one that our instructor used to throw on us when we were already tired. So when you're totally exhausted, try to do 20 burpees. You'd die about on the 10th. LOL

LABABLA, I've seen that done, going from Crow into a handstand. It is a really difficult thing to do. That video you linked to is great. It demonstrates doing it against a wall. That is how I'm doing my handstands. I'm not able, yet, to do free-standing ones. I'm also not yet able to do handstand-pushups. Hmmm...future goal??

You use a TRX? I have been really curious about suspension training. I really want to try it. How do you like it? I do lots of bodyweight stuff and I would love to add TRX work into the mix.

I had to look up Shawna Kaminsky. She seems amazing. Thanks for mentioning her. I see she has a book on bodyweight and jump rope work. Do you use it?

I practice HIIT and Tabatas, too. I can't imagine using a jump rope or doing bodyweight moves for Tabata training. Sprinting all out for those 20 seconds, I would surely miss jumping rope and have bad form doing, pushups for example. Seems like a sure way to get injured. I would be thinking about my form, trying not to miss...instead of just concentrating on the sprint and my breath. I've been keeping it simple using the elliptical or the x-trainer for this. I can't run anymore due to an old injury or I would be running on the track for all my interval training. What do you do for Tabata training?

Your post was full of all kinds of interesting stuff. Thanks.

I had to google the Crow and came up with this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9zNHbTZ4
lI
Are you eventually going to try to flow the crow into the handstand ?
I might set this fit 2014 goal;)
In order to practice handstands, I need to clear a wall ;)
My goals are more or less in my signature:
Flexibility-wise I 'd love to be able to do a full squat with heels on floor, that would help then to do unassisted pistol squats. Currently I do pistols with help or TRX, and/or need to step on something to get my heel higher. I tried to show it in the office to my colleague while wearing high-heels and could nearly do it.
Strength-wise : I am set for coaching of Shawna Kaminsky to do pull-ups, however I need a bar, ha,ha.
Health-wise: I'd like to close my diastasis recti. I am restarting thoroughly this time, Julie Tupler's technique. I also googled various other techniques/trainer (MuTu system, BeFit-Mom and the center for women fitness)...it looks like my case is not so bad after all, but I still want to try and close that gap.

Now about jump rope : I need to practice with a real rope and my goal is make my own weighted jump ropes and manage them. At least to make efficient Tabata, to be able to go full speed for 1 minutes without fails.

Edited by: LABABLA at: 7/28/2013 (04:32)
If you do nothing, nothing will happen to you

next goals:
body: flat tummy, close diastasis recti
strength: do pull-up
endurance: jump rope
flexibility: full squat with heels on floor

Wow, Petalia! Congrats on your goals! Holding Crow for 20 breaths, hard work!! That's so great you've achieved both headstands and crow!

Just looking back over my goals and I'm doing okay for the year. :)

-500 fitness minutes per month
-Healthy lifestyle
-Be in 140s

My fitness minutes are on track and more than I thought by the time I reach this time of the year. My total for the year so far is 4483 which is more than 500 per month (roughly over 600 per month?) and so I am on target and happy!
My eating has been better this year than last, allowing for ups and downs and motivation loss... I feel I have a much better understanding of food and what I need in my body and what I don't.
I did creep up to the 150s so still need to work on keeping the weight stable... I am much more lean this year, I can feel and see it... so I don't need to be too worried about what the scale says but I'm back in the 140s now and think I might be staying.

PETALIA - Wow, congrats on your progress for your fitness goals! I'm still having problem with my own pistol squats, maybe I should try something like vertical pole for support. Jump rope alternate leg like delicate jog like the boxers do, I want to try that, too, as I think I'm pretty good with jumping both feet with minimum distance away from ground :)

I think I need to change my goal a little bit, regarding my study, hmmm.

I've been working on my fitness goals. Thought I would update. I'm doing handstands, assisted by a wall at my toes, for 2 minutes average. I'm able to hold 'Crow" for about 20 breaths. Presently, I can do 2 consecutive chin-ups. I'm working a progression towards doing pull-ups. I can do self-assisted (using a vertical pole for support) pistol squats - to the ground. I've had to take time off from this practice several times. Seems going lower than the height of my knees can often give my knees trouble.

After watching that video of boxers jumping rope, I'm trying to jump rope one leg at a time, like a delicate jog or a little dance. I want to lift my legs off the ground as little as possible. All this time I have been jumping both legs together. This is a challenge for me. I'd like to be able to jump 100 consecutive times this way by the end of the year.

Well woah. It's nice to look back on these.

So back at the beginning of January I wrote -
"Aim for a minimum of 500 fitness minutes per month. Dedication.
Be extra mindful of what I am eating and when I am full. Healthy lifestyle. Actually live it.
I would like to be sitting comfortably again in the 140s... Preferably the low 140s, maybe even break to 139!"

I completed over 500 fitness minutes for January. Yay!
My eating was great the whole way through January too, no junk food or takeaway food. This is huge for me and I hope to keep the streak going.
I've made it back into the 140s! Not sitting comfortably just yet though!

It really does help SO much to make goals and write them down... I'm glad to be part of this team!

Congrats on your handstand PETALIA! And keep going with the pullups and crow, they will come! :)

Hope everybody else is going great!! emoticon

I've made only a little progress on my fitness goals, so far. I did my first handstand the other day. I did not write down this as a fitness goal, but in my mind it always has been. I'm still working on 'Crow'. I'm able to hold it for 1.5-2 seconds, an improvement, but far from goal. I'm doing assisted pull ups at the gym and I hung a pull-up bar in my home, but I have yet to really take that goal on in a disciplined way. Sigh. I'm able to do a pistol squat to a bench most every time. I seem to have gotten stuck. Bending my legs more than 90*, going lower than a right angle hasn't happened, yet. I continue to work on it.

OK...3 goals.

1. Drink water. Looking back over the last month, I only hit about 1 cup a day. Sometimes not even that much.....

2. Stop mindlessly eating junk. With 4 kids, 2 classes and a full time job, I eat while I work almost always. This needs to end.

3. Exercise. And accept that I am not a runner. Really, this doesn't make me a bad person, no matter how many of my friends are obsessed with it.... I will begin with at least 10 minutes of exercise at least 4 days/week.

Wow...my goals do not look that hard to meet. But this time, I need to meet them....

I can do this...

I've got two small fitness goals for 2013: I so very, very much want to do a pistol squat all the way down to the ground (and back up!). I also want to do the yoga asana 'Crow' without using a block and to be able to hold it for more than 1/2 second. Getting into arm balances and handstands would be delightful but I'll keep my goals attainable and limited to successfully doing Crow and a full pistol squat.

Addendum: Oh, I want also to be able to do a for-real full pull-up! So I've got three fitness goals after all.

Hi Team!

List out your 2013's top three goals or just pick three randomly from your list and share them here!

I know that most of us probably have a very, very long list and you have shared them in various SP teams but in our team, why's only three? Because three goals are achievable in 365 days and I'll personally will "poke" you about your goals in your SparkPage at random time :D

Let's make 2013 the best, luckiest year!
