Like I said earlier I am getting one sooner than I thought. I live in a trailer and there is no room for a jump-rope. So a rope-less jump-rope is perfect I can get my jumping in and not tear down my home. Outside it is a good old fashion jump-rope whether it keeps count or talks.
I am following mu Dr's orders. So I will not over do it or re-injure myself. But I will be here checking in.

I,myself, am not interested in trying a rope-less jump rope. For me, I am not interested in the cardio activity alone which occurs from merely jumping up and down (I wouldn't need any rope or rope-less jump rope to do that), rather, I am interested in the combination of the heart and lungs working out via jumping together using eye/hand coordination via turning and skipping over the jump rope simultaneously. That is difficult and challenging and, for me, then the fun begins. Plus, I like that the equipment is utterly simple and humble, a mere length of rope. That is beautiful.

I keep reading about these ropeless jump rope, I wonder how does it works and is it better than the roped jump rope. I hope, DRAGONFLY126, that you will get much better and agree with get temporary stop to get heal, not worth to keep pushing if you will end up get more injury.

It does not talk while you are jumping. It has a button on the handle you push to check. It tells you how many jumps and cals burned. But it looks like I just might be getting that rope-less jump-rope sooner than I think I just replaced the batteries and it still sounds like the batteries are dying. That is o.k. it will give me time to heal . I had a fall a week ago and hurt my neck and shoulder and lower back not to mention all the bruises. I can start up again in July.

I wonder if the voice from the jump rope will distract or not but that sounds cool! Must be nice if we can have mp3 jump rope so that instead of we have to secure very tighly our mp3 player while jumping, the mp3 jump rope can give music without skipping a beat :D

It's interesting to read various jump ropes you all have here. For me, it's still a jump rope that has handles that easily to grip with my small hands and curve nicely in my palms :D

A plastic beaded rope. I like the weight, flexibility and the handles. And that it never tangles!

But I'm a newbie to rope jumping and have enjoyed reading the posts. I've learned a few things!

I use a rubber rope with ball bearings. The rubber turns effortlessly and a bit slower than a leather or a pvc one. I like this for endurance jumping. It's adjustable, too, so I could make it just the right length. If anyone hasn't tried a rope with ball bearings in the handles, I highly recommend it.

I love the one that I have now, the handles are easier to grip as the shape of the handles are curved, not silinder shape like most of ropes.

Thank you! I feel sure 9 feet is too long for me, but that's what it says.--5'5"-6' (9 ft).
I may want a different one I purchased a Bob Harper Heavy Jumprope--1.5 lbs. Anyone use this kind?

I really appreciate this thread. After reading about the beaded ropes, I got a Nautilus rope at Sears and wow, everything y'all have said is true... it's a lot easier to operate than a regular rope. I've been jumping on my lunch break and I'm really happy.

I have an ordinary jump rope, bought in a toy store a couple of years ago. It can actually count my jumps, but that's about it. It's pink and purple, by the way, and has nice foamy handles. It's entirely made out of plastic, I think.

Oh well, at least it's pretty!

I jump with an Everlast leather rope. 9feet long. wooden handles with bearings. I bet it is over 15 years old, and still works flawlessly. Any problems can easily be blamed on operator error. Have a great day

Hi everyone,

I just got back fromn vacation - and whist there we had a bunch of kidlets around so I tried the jumprope laying around....I did great - but it was too light & kept tripping me up. So, I'm going to take all of the advice I've gleaned from these posts and also about the size and go see what I can find. Do you all just wear tennies? I had on sandals, so maybe they were getting caught in the rope....but for 61 years young, my husband was impressed at how well I could jump rope emoticon me too actually, but I know it is excellent exercise as well as fun, so maybe I've found something beside walking that I might stick with! Thanks. donna

I have a 3m LCD calorie jump rope, but I can get really good speed with it. For faster workouts (or for the last few intervals) I use a TKO leather skip rope- it feels better to hold too, with foam handles rather than plastic ones.

You're right around 5'-5", so I'd go with the longer rope. 275cm or so.

It's better to have a rope that's a little too long, because you can shorten it. Even if it's not adjustable, you can add a few knots near the handle.

The general rule is that a jump rope that is the right length for you should just reach your armpits if you're standing on the center of it. Don't be afraid to take them out of the box and try them out, if that's an option for you at your store.

I'm just starting...and real slow too.
I've been looking to use jump roping as a cardio for some time...
So what am I using???

1) I started by cutting a black and orange twisted moving robe and I cut it to size (thanks to SP and the same article DRKIMMIEPOOH posted).

2) I also bought two plastic ones from a 99cent only store! I was so happy when I came across it!

3) I recently looked into the JumpSnap ropeless rope. Not sure if I'll get it, but it's tempting because jumping in my apt. doesn't work so well with the ceiling and space.

Copied from a Spark Article, (Listed as a favorite of mine...come get it!)

Before you get started, first make sure you have the right sized rope for you. When you step in the center of the rope, the handles should just reach your armpits. This chart will help you find the correct length rope for your height.

Under 5ft (7ft)
5' to 5'5" (8 ft)
5'5"-6' (9 ft)
Over 6' (10 ft)

Introductory Jump Rope Program
Now that you’ve mastered technique, this three-week program will help you build endurance. Always warm up before you start jumping, either by marching or jogging in place, for about five minutes. Finish each workout with a 5-minute cool down, and be sure to stretch the calves, quadriceps, hamstrings and shoulders.

Week 1: Practice the basic bounce step, using an interval (work-rest) training method. Try to jump and rest at a 1:2 ratio (rest twice as long as you jump, such as 15 seconds jumping and 30 seconds resting). Depending on how quickly you pick it up and how conditioned you are, start with around five to 25 consecutive jumps each work period. Then stop, rest, and start jumping again for a total of about three to five minutes. Aim for three practice sessions each week.

Week 2: As you gain confidence and ability, try to increase the number of consecutive jumps you can do before resting. Use the same interval training method, but this time at a 1:1 ratio (your rest time to be equal to your jump time, such as one minute jumping and one minute resting). Repeat your intervals for a total of five to six minutes. Aim for four sessions each week. By the end of week two, you should be able to jump for two to three minutes non-stop.

Week 3 and beyond: By now, you've got the hang of it! You should be able to jump for a few minutes straight without needing a break, keeping a pace around 120 turns per minute (two jumps per second). The goal over the next few weeks is to gradually increase your jumping time (while decreasing your resting time) until you can go for 10 minutes non-stop. Keep jumping rope a part of your workout routine about every other day.

Mastering technique: Now that you're fit to jump for several minutes, try some of the following speed and jumping techniques to keep challenging your body:
Increase your speed. Aim for 180 turns per minute (3 jumps per second).
Switch directions. Instead of turning the rope from back to front, switch its direction (forward to back) for more challenge.
Crossovers. Cross the rope and your arms in front of your body as you jump through the rope.
Scissor jumps. Turn the rope as you normally would, but scissor your legs forward and back (like skiing back and forth) to clear the rope.
High stepping. Turn the rope as you normally would, but clear the rope with a high knee run (bringing one knee up high at a time).
Jump straddles. Turn the rope as you normally would, but clear the rope with a jumping jack motion with your legs (straddle legs apart then together).
Freestyle it! Get creative—invent your own jump!
Jumping rope is an intense, high-impact activity, so it's not something you'd want to do every day—even though it can be addicting! For more workout ideas and techniques, check out the RopeSport workout DVDs, which are available at SparkFitness.com.

I just joined this group! A few weeks ago I started jumping while I watched my kids play outside and it has been a great way to get cardio minutes in. My favorite ropes are the cheap ones you buy in the kid sections. I am 5'2" so they are the perfect length. I have tried the weighted ones but I don't like them as much. Today I got 2000 jumps in while watching my kids play outside.

While I can't personally recommend any, as I haven't used any, my girlfriend uses Netflix for her workout videos. It allows her to sample them and hold on to ones she likes for awhile (until she gets bored of them), while not getting stuck with a bunch of videos she hates with annoying teachers. That struck me as a really interesting way of doing it.

initially i ought a rope with weighted handles (cost me $20) but the rope itself was too light. SO now I use my younger sister's $3 plastic rope. Go figure but it does the trick.

i have a jump rope that i had for years. actually its not a jump rope its like a cotton cord thats made of jump rope material. its good because its light so i have to use resistance with my arm to bring it over my head which make the work out better. i lost alot of weight jumping rope before its a good cardio and it burns alot. you can do it indoors thats the best part.

The rule of thumb is that the jump rope handles should fit perfectly in your armpits if you're standing on the center of the jump rope with both feet. Some of them are adjustable, but even the ones that aren't can easily be shortened with a knot or two near the handles.

As for exactly what the right size is for you, I'm not sure. But when I bought mine I went to Target and they all were in unsealed boxes, and I had no qualms about opening one of each until I found one I liked that was about the right size. And a number of employees walked past me and none of them even looked at me twice or asked if I needed help.

I have a Reebok MT Tech. It's a heavy blue rope with rubberized grips and removable one pound weights in each handle. So far, I like it. But on my faster attempts, it seems like either the rope or I get a bit lazy sometimes. It's probably more my form than the rope, though.

It was on sale for around $8.00 at Target, so not like I haven't already got my money out of it.

Just got it yesterday- trying today-
WELLNESS GEAR- has a timer, calories burned, etc. on it- digital- rubber rope and soft neoprene handles- I chose it instead of Discovery's digital because of handles and price. We'll see how well it works today. Can't wait to try it!

My jump rope is black with very comfy handles. The cool thing about this jump rope is that it has weights in the handles. So I can decide if I want an extra workout for my arms. I'll go home and see if I can see a name brand on it.

Mine is black with very comfortable cushy handles. I don't see any brand name on it but I remember buying it at Wall Mart a while ago. It's adjustable and by reading on several sites, I realized it was too long. Two days ago, I adjusted it and found that I am less tripping and I can do up to 160 jumps without stopping. The length is important. Soon, I want to get one with weights.

The best has yet to come.

I have a yellow and blue beaded one. I've had other kinds, and I love the beaded one best. I think I'm going to set a goal though, for jumping rope, and if I meet it, I'm going to buy one of those custom-colored ones. I'm a sucker for colorful toys. I have to figure out my goal now.

Hello all, i am new to this team as of today. I asked for a jump rope for Christmas, and I got it! I had wanted the jump rope w/ the weighted handles, but my husband decided to get me the adjustable speed rope instead (i am only 5'1" so he figured a 9' rope that was not adjustable would not be the best idea!) I am so excited to get home & try my rope out tonight!

Hi everyone, my name is Jenna but you can call me Kaine. I have been a jump roper simce I was 4 years old, joining every club and association as a kid. I was so happy to see this spark team. As for the question at hand. I have 5-6 beaded ropes (all different lengths) accumulated from years of jump rope club and hoppin hoosiers tryouts. I also have 4-5 plastic spead ropes ( the ones we also used as children) and again all different lengths and I recently got a reebok plastic spead rope with t bar handles. Also, I have a rubber tubing one with weighted, cusioned handles. I see what kind of workout I want and then go to my wall of jump ropes and pick out which one will be the most fitting. I have 5 jump rope dvds that i use along with just going out and doing all my old tricks and routines from when i was a kid. Oh and thanks to the person that posted the link for the custom ropes. Perfect for my collection (as some of my ropes are about 16 years old and too short for me but i will save those for my kids) I went to that site and bought me a pink and black 8 foot one and my husband a blue and orange 9 foot and a set of double dutch ropes so hopefully I can get my friends and family into the fun! Hey sorry this ended up so long but i love this team and am so happy to be a part of it. If anyone wants to know the names of the jump rope dvds, please let me know, I would totally recommend any of them!
Thanks for reading!
Kaine

I just got a rubber tubing one, to replace the rope child's one I was using that was so short I had to pinch the ends.

After a few jumps, it squishes together at the end. Doesn't keep a graceful curve, so I end up jumping over the twisted part. Do all tubing ones do this?

I'll get the Target one and try it out. And replace the tubing one with the beaded one they also had.

I just got a new rope. It's a vinyl one from Target, maker is Prospirit. It doesn't kink up easily, and cuts through air like nobody's business. I enjoyed it a lot. Thankfully, I got the perfect length for a mere $2.29.

I also have the white one with the wooden handles. But I have a plastic tubing one too. I just don't use it, because it curls up and is too long. I love the beaded ones. I was a jump-rope queen as a kid. LOL! I could jump all day, literally. Unfortunately, I didn't do much double-dutch and trick roping. :(

My granddaughter wants to join me in the skipping.

Last night as I was skipping my 13 month old puppy kept grabbing the rope, after I put him outside I skipped for ten minutes.

Hello, I like the rope with the beads, it is a little heavier which works out my forearms, and it seems to swing easier. Make sure you don't cut the string till you find the length you like. (Had to buy another one)

Good luck and ........... KEEP JUMPING!

Hi everyone. I just joined the group, and I am exited about finally using my new rope on a regular basis. I have an adjustable rope with built in timer, cal counter, and memory.

I love my beaded jump rope - like the ones you used in grade school. It's weighted perfectly. They sound cool, too. :)
You can make one with custom colors at:

But you can get your basi red/white, blue/white, black/white in many sports stores or online.

Hi,

My name is Ginger. I just thought it would be interesting to see what kind of jump ropes are out there. I just have a plain plastic one that is just my size and I use it all the time. I was excited when I saw this sight. I have a cousin that has a jump rope made of nothing but different colored rubber bands. I think it's neat. Who ever thought of it was creative. Your team mate, Ginger
