If you haven't checked this out already, it lists the proper way or jump roping. I'm not too sure about what a good weight is to start, but this is a great exercise for cardio and I'm sure you can do it.
Have you checked the web? I'm not sure about weight issues, but I know skipping rope is not supposed to be bad on your knees if you do it right.

does anyone have any tips for starting jumping rope while you are overweight? I am 5'6 and weigh 264lbs. I am just starting to get into exercise and want to know if its safe to jump rope at this weight?
