Has anyone received their sample crockpot liners yet? I requested them some time back, and I'm just wondering if I slipped through the cracks...

Hi All, I'm new here. Love this Team. Great Recipes. Will contribute when I can. I had a question. If I wanted to add some whole wheat pasta to a recipe when would I add it? About how long does it take pasta to cook with other stuff.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone!1 I made the Cabbage Beef Stew today in the crockpot and it was a big hit. I put it on this morning before church and when we got home and hit the door it smelled so yummy!! I substituted ground turkey for the beef. I got the recipe on SP.

I got 2 crockpots for Christms, a 3 or 3.5 quart and a 6 quart with a meat thermometer. I have never used one until last week and it turned out very nice. I cannot wait to start making more meals.

I suggest trying it when you will be home to learn how it cooks. The new ones cook REALLY fast, even on low.

I got a new crock pot for Christmas, but have been way to busy to cook with it yet. LOL to busy to use the crock pot. It isn't the same as the one that cracked its crock, so hopefully I will like it. It also is a digital one and I am very leary of that at the moment. Still trying to decide what to try in it first.

Good JOB Dottie!

I can't tell if I gained 3 pounds are if it is water weight as my rings are tight. I could've/should've done better this weekend but the next meal is a new begining!

Tomorrow is stregnth training day! (I lose more when I strength train compared to the little cardio I can do)

Hi

Even though I'm relocated to Nova Scotia Canada we still celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday and oh yes since they celebrate here in October we did that one too but untraditional as opposed to yesterday.

I cooked a whole chicken in my slowcooker all day. I added apples to it and seasoning it was wonderful just fell apart. I also made stuffing using stove top but added raisins and apples to it. We had mashed potatos and carrots.

I mapped out in the morning exactly what I was eating and how much and I stuck to it. I actually in spots ate less than what I planned. But I'm proud of not overeating.

Well, i got out my Mothers crock pot and made my BBQish sauce with a pork roast. I am not sure that I like her crop pot. It is a Rival oval shaped with a green insert and decorated on the outside with ivy. It definately does not cook as hot as mine, and I am not sure that it actually is cooking hot enough. At home in my crock pot my BBQish sauce turns out nice and thick. Down here I followed my recipe and it turned out very thin. It still tasted good though, but I really don't think that she is going to get into it. It would be very helpful for her though if she would - sigh!

I am doing at lest half of the cooking for Thanksgiving. I actually have gotten a few things at least started today. I am making a lot of fresh tender crisp cooked veggies so all of that will need to be done tomorrow. I am going to do the turkey in the counter top roaster oven thing. They always turn out well for me in there, but I have to use the turkey baking bags you can buy at the store because other wise they tend to get a little dry in there.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I know sometimes there are areas, like mine, that have "stacked cooking" which is OAMC short term. Our local news midday show has it once a week, and it is for 3 days of dinner meals, usually different. I don't know if I could do a month, but 3 dinners would be nice. Maybe there is one in your area to try out.

The best place I have found for OAMC is www.recipezaar.com they have lots of OAMC labled recipes and a great forum too.
I don't really do OAMC right now since I work at home and throwing something together and into the crockpot isn't a big deal. But I will be going back to a lab job soon, and will probably start back up. A lot of the things that I have done were pretty healthy. I did a lot of pre-marinating and such. Right now probably the only OAMC thing left are some of DHs breakfast burritos and leftovers from when I double cooked a dinner.

I am leaving on Saturday for a trip back home to visit my parents. I probably wont be on much that first week I am gone since we will be on a cruise. But I plan on teaching my mom some of my favorite crockpot meals. She never used one while I was growing up, but I really think that it would be easier for her to do it now. I bought her a crockpot that matches her set of dishes, so I think that might be motivating for her. Wish me luck in converting her!

Good question Nancy, I would love to do that too. I was just talking to my husband about how nice it would be to pull a meal out of the freezer.
I got a pretty good crockpot cookbook at Costco a couple of years ago. I think they came in a set of two.

I have a question are there any groups cooking meals ahead; omac [like once a month cooking] with a healthy focus, not just in the crock-pot that you know of at spark people? I like to do this for the holidays.

For those in the u.s.a. don't for get to vote.

Getting ready! I' m getting ready for some bulk cooking in the crock pots tomorrow.
I got the freezer defrosted this weekend.
I'm looking forward to making some meals ahead to put in the freezer now.
We are able to stay on our program with so much much more success by eating at home.
I'm looking forward to this because the house will smell great!

MAYBE you can just get a GLASS lid for it on their website? Do the new ones even come with plastic anymore?

You can only get appliances for Christmas IF you ask for it by NAME.

I made the Pinapple chicken last night. It was YUMMY! The lid (plastic) to my crockpot cracked. It's still hanging in there and doing okay, but I'm going through the same thing. . . do I get a new lid or just a whole new crock . . . or both! (Who says giving electrical appliances for Christmas is not OKAY????)

Slcolman,

Sorry about your crock :( Was the crock warm when you put the cold stuff in it? You can get a whole new crockpot for $30 at Target and Wally world. I hope you get it up and going soon! When my crockpot broke (it should've been recalled but never was) I had my honey go to Sam's club (like Costco) that day and buy me a new one (we are still paying for on the Sam's card).

Well I was starting to put something together in the crock for dinner tonight, but can't. The last time I used it I heard a cracking noise but couldn't figure out what it was - now I know. I don't know why it happened. I always put cold things in a cold crock. I guess I need to get a replacement crock. I checked on the website and it will be about $25 will shipping. So, I am not sure what I am going to do - get the replacement crock or get a new crockpot.

Glad to hear that you are feeling less sore. Car accidents are scary things!

I'm feeling less sore today, I think... I have a cold or something and was running a fever last night so it's hard to tell what's causing soreness. The insurance seems to be sorting out pretty quickly. We had the same company, so it took under 24 hours to "investigate" and my car is now at the shop. The rear-ender's insurance is covering the work and a rental for me. So far it seems to be working out okay.

My mom and sister got rear-ended 8 years ago, turning into the drivers' license facility to take my sis's test. She was driving, the car got knocked into oncoming traffic and was totaled. Mom and sis still have problems with back and neck soreness. The insurance "covered" the car. My parents got a check to give the bank for the remainder of the loan and had $1.75 or so to put towards a replacement.

I was rearended because I stopped at a red light. The guy behind me decided he wanted to run it and expected me to do the same. Are you alright?
My neck and shoulder were messed up pretty badly (since he sped up and I slowed down and it was a 40 mph road)- "nothing permanent" per teh Insurance co but its been 6 yrs and I still have problems. Not big ones anymore, but still... It happened on Friday the 13th of October in 2000 (last friday I was VERY nervous!!)

It was a bad day. I got rear-ended...don't you love people who accelerate as soon as the light turns green, but don't watch the road and look down instead, so they don't see that the 5 cars in front of them are all stopped? And then they say, well, you started to drive, what happened, like it's your fault...

Hi again. Sounds like a good plan with the Slowcooking cookbook. I will work on that :) I went shopping at WalMart and while waiting in the check stand I came across this Rival Crockpot Slow Cooker recipe card collection book. I am checking out the recipes. Some of them sound real good :) I am leaving on Thurs nite for Vegas for Grandson's birthday but when I get home :) Watch out LOL
They even have desserts :)
I think I will be having fun.

Chris,

WELCOME!! Both of my husbands first thought the only thing you could do with a crockpot was roast.. I taught them better.

Since I do ALL of the cooking it isn't like my husband gets much say anyway ;)

The kids and hubby will tell me if the recipe is a keeper or not. (read Family Cookbook thread)

Have fun and ENJOY!!

Just wanted to post a Good Morning and Thanks for inviting me here :) I am new with the Crockpot thing. My 1st hubby, never liked crockpot foods and my 2nd isnt so keen on it, but since I do the cooking and work full time, he will eat it LOL
I made my first with pork and it came out pretty good. I bought the pre-packaged teriyaki flavored pork. I threw in some potatoes and carrots and garlic. I have enough for another meal :) I bought a 4 quart crockpot. There is only two of us now and I am learning to cook smaller meals.
Thanks again
Chris

Meat is supposed to reach a certain tempature inside and the FDA stepped in and made the slowcookers cook fast.

I am now on the search for vintage crockpot.. aka before 1995!

I have been checking my goodwill every few weeks in hopes of find a vintage crockpot.

I put whole frozen roast in mine often. I put it on high if frozen and low if not.

I have an old green crockpot I picked up at a garage sale in mint condition and it is awesome. I also wanted a larger oval one and bought one last year, Rival I think. It was a large oval, platinum, with a plastic lid... The one and only time I used it (before I returned it) I came home to overcooked dried out meat. The plastic lid was rattling like crazy - so I think that if you don't have a good heavy (glass) lid then too much moisture is getting out. I returned it and bought another oval platinum one with a heavy glass lid and haven't had a single problem with it. I just really don't think that the plastic lid ones are any good. And the old green or orange ones seem to be the best ones out there - so go garage saling!

I also throw frozen food in mine, I've done this with chicken and pork chops and haven't had a problem. I'm not sure if you could throw in a few pound whole frozen roast though --- has anyone done this?

I've used a slowcooker since.. well... My mom used one when I was growing up so for over 30 years I have at least eaten food from a slowcooker. I've never gotten sick.

The internal temp of meat should reach a certain temp to kill bacteria.. BUT what about jerky?? That is not even cooked.. it is DRIED!.. eww....

so this is interesting. if the FDA makes slow cookers hotter then they don't take as long to cook, they're really no longer "slow cookers" humm. kinda stupid if you ask me, i wonder if anybody's gotten sick from something made in a slow cooker or something. or else why would they change the temp. of the slow cookers. my curiosity has been peaked.

NO!! Do not preheat the crockpot. You run the risk of the crock breaking if you put cold things in a hot crock.

I cook frozen meat in my crock pot all the time. I just start with a cold (not preheated) crockpot. It usually takes a little longer to cook things this way, but I don't mind that at all. I also cook frozen veggies with it all the time.

It is because the FDA has decided that the slowcookers HAVE to reach a certain temp to safely cook food. Rival can do nothing about it.

I bought a new one with a timer and have only used it twice because it burned things both times on low. I went back to my old one and never have anything burned. I wrote to Rival to let them know how HOT it got.

The newer crockpots (brand name) cook HOT! A lot of people find that they need to cook on the warm setting to keep from getting overdone. Trial and error to figure out the best way of cooking with yours.

Okay thanks. So I can not worry about throwing in a frozen roast with all the "stuff." Cool beans

I had my first CrockPot Disaster this week. lol I think I overcooked it. I had sorta "assumed" that my hubby would see it and check on it and turn it off if it looked done, but NOPE. It was a small piece of meat and I think it was just too too long. It didn't taste really bad, but the other stuff in there was definitely no good and the meat was really dry. oh well. learning experience. lol

I cook frozen meat in the crockpot often.

Tomorrow it is pork roast!

The reasoning being the FDA is worried about food poisoning with meat.

You can safely put frozen veggies in the crockpot.

Does that also mean you can't put frozen vegetables in it either? or is it just that frozen meat shouldn't be cooked?

I put frozen meat in all the time. Make sure the crock is not on though. The books that come with them tell you not to cook frozen food in them.

I have a question for you all:
Do you defrost meat before putting it in the crockpot or just chuck it in there frozen?
I realized that lately I've been cooking it the same day i buy it so it's not frozen. But I do have some stuff in the freezer I want to make and am not sure if I need to defrost it or not. THANKS!!

Okay, I'm just so excited that I wanted to share w/ all my teams!

I just completed the Denver SGK, Race For The Cure 5K! Over 60,000 participants and over 1 million dollars raised for breast cancer research!

My son and I completed it in 48 minutes, and we ran for Aunt Annie..breast cancer survivor. We ran for all cancer victims and survivors! Cancer SUCKS!

Thanks for letting me share, I hope you all have a wonderful day! :o)

Jenny,

Put the left over gravy into ice cubes. Once frozen put them in a freezer bag. Now use them when 'stock' is called for or a cube in skillet with frozen veggies. DON'T THROW IT OUT!!!

Put a cube or two into mashed potato's (after you thaw the cubes)

Use a cube in the water when you make rice.

Get the idea?

Have fun!

ahh a stoup.. i think that is what i can call my DH stews. He always uses my largest pot and fills it with liquid. so when he dishes up the stew he uses a slotted spoon to dish up most of the meat and veg. and then leaves nearly half a pot of soup/gravy. Which i have to decide what to do with.

Some of Rachael Ray's stuff is too expensive for our family but I get some good idea's. I am a food network junkie though.

The boys (35,11 TODAY,9,and 6) LOVE Alton Brown.

My husband calls her the Cooking Goddess. He'll ask me why I am doing something and I'll say," Rachael Ray said too." His come back is,"Oh I see. The Cooking Goddess has spoken so it MUST be done." While laughing at me!

Thanks for the explanation. My SIL watches Rachel Ray too so maybe that's where she got it from. lol I just never expected to hear it anywhere else. I tend to take recipes and personalize them too (when I cook and bake).

I did not coin the word 'Stoup'. I got it from Rachel Ray. My husband does not like 'soup' but he LOVES my stoups.

For those that don't know a stoup is too thin to be a stew and too thick to be a soup... STOUP!

The Chicken and Sausage Stoup recipe started as something from Rachel Ray. Now it no longer resemebles the orginal recipe except that it has chicken in it ;).

I LOVE making my own recipes.. Maybeone day I will have my own cookbook printed.. Maybe...

I had to giggle at Lady Flannel's Stoup recipe (in Soup Recipe Thread). I only heard this term recently when my SILs Chicken soup was more stew-ish b/c she ran out of broth. She called it a Stoup. It was Fantastic too! I'm not big on soup because I don't like broth all that much so it was perfect for me. I never knew it was a real word though. lol
