A recent study was done done on the Mediterranean diet and the study was cancelled because of the results sooner then it was suppose to be. The results showed that the people who added 1/2 cup of olive oil daily to their diet lost more weight, had lower cholesterol and less heart attacks then the people tested on their lower fat Mediterranean diet. In Canada where I live the recommendations the government had for cholesterol are gone, because it was found out cholesterol does not increase heart attacks. It was decided trans fats are very bad and I know that Omega 6 is bad fat and Omega 3 is good fat. The omega 6 will kill off the Omega 3 fat if you have too much of it. I track everything including all Omegas on another site. Omega 6 is in beef that is not natural and has G.M.O. in it. Natural beef has Omega 3, the kind that is in salmon in it, that is why it is now considered good for your health. The same with eggs if they do not say they likely have bad Omega 6 in it unless it says it has Omega 3. MY DR. said my cholesterol is too low, so I will try adding more olive oil which does have cholesterol in it among other things in it.

Linda. I live in Canada. My time zone is Pacific Standard Time, daylight savings time. I have chronic kidney disease and low blood pressure & blood clots in my lung. I am on the summer challenge that started July 1. I am on the Teddy Bears Team. I am 54 years old as of last January 12.

So fun watching my DD shop for her joining the Mediterannean Diet ...I have never seen her buy so many fruits and veggies. Good talk time with her about gluten free variations... Life is good and I am so thankful.

So I am one who needs accountability...
Three Fruits Daily =1/2 in middle of night with med; 1/2 for dinner and apple for snack
Three veggies daily=potato, sweet pepper ,onion, yellow squash, Zucchini, avocado, tomato
Three fish weekly = set albacore tuna out for tomorrow, plan salmon for Saturday lunch
3 legume weekly =4 bean salad, black beans, fresh green beans
Olive oil daily= easily do this...
White chicken =lunch
Walnut/almond = chopped walnuts in fruit smoothie this evening with apple and yogurt
Wine with meal is not option [dry alcoholic] so will have 5oz red or purple grape juice daily= am snack

I think this is do-able!!! I am excited ...will be interesting to keep it going while on vacation!

Leesa, thanks for the encouragement ...Actually our potatoes are usually baked or I boil them cubed in 1/2 inch cubes, in minimal water with fresh ground pepper and lots of dried parsley. Then I save the extras in individual dishes for later meals and ways such as like hashbrowns for DH breakfast, into a potato salad, or add frozen petite peas and a few bites of cubed cheese. So I guess I can continue to count them as long as not adding "fixens" to them. Leaving off the butter is getting easier as every pound comes off the scales!

Hi Linda,

Potatoes certainly count as a vegetable, but they can be rather calorie-dense depending on how they're prepared. A baked potato topped with salsa (only) would be a very healthful food choice, but a big plate of scalloped potatoes, not so much.
