Maybe you could contact the county library by phone.

Actually, I looked them up online & they do have a website with a "Contact us" feature. You might try that. Below is a link to the site.

Yes.....I noticed in the 1910 Census that Crawford was a butcher....his daughter Ora Dell Cheek was living with him. They lived in Carpenter, Jasper, Indiana....

I wonder if there is a local library in Carpenter? It's only 52 square miles, and you would be amazed at what some of those small towns keep.

I was looking for ancestors in Preeceville, Saskatchewan and was surprised to find a local history book on the town and then found pictures on my ancestor and his family. I almost dropped my teeth!! lol

Could be but he was listed on my dads birth cert as father. I have a write up in the paper where James Crawford cheek and Ira worked in his dads butcher store when he was a young kids. I just wish I could find pictures of Ira or James his father

You know....looking at all the records for Ira's siblings..(Ora, Fannie, and Harry), they all list them as being white.

Maybe your dad's bio father was someone other than Ira?!?!

Sounds like most of your answers were taken to the grave....

Similar to what I'm dealing with....DH's dads biological mother was an Indian from northern Minnesota. She worked on the "family farm" and got pregant from Gpa and she allowed him and his wife to raise her son. That was in 1920.

While she kept track of George his whole life...who he married, when all their kids were born. We even think she attended some of the family funerals...but we don't know her name! Every year George would receive a Christmas card with money in it, but no name signed on the card. His whole life he felt like he was one of the "hired hands" on the farm and his complexion was obviously darker than his siblings.

All those secrets they took to their graves...

Was just looking for some of his siblings and noticed that both Harry & Leona were also buried in Remington Cemtery with their parents. I noticed that their deaths also listed them as being white....

How frustrating for you. Could the person that input the information at the cemetery, be of any assistance to you?

The last record I find on Ira Cheek is the City Directory in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1920 and of course his marriage to your grandmother.

Do you live close enough that you could check out the courthouse in Vigo County for possible death records on Ira?

WOW - you do have a mystery!!

Let's see......57 in 1925....that would make him born in 1868. The Ira Melven Cheek that I found info on was born Oct 1874 and his parents were Crawford James Cheeck and Alice (Deits) Cheek.

According to Ira M. Cheek marriage records - she was Cecil E. Newhouse, married 1 Dec 1920.

But there is a Cecil Humble that married an Ira E. Newhouse in 15 Aug 1915 in Vigo Cty, IN.

Guess I'm getting confused....

I just checked the "Blackfoot genealogy" web page for the Surname of CHEEK and it was not listed.

On the World War I Draft Registration, it lists also lists that Ira was white. I also took his dad's name off this same record - Crawford James Cheek and tried to find birth records in Ohio, to no avail. Nor could I find death records on Crawford or Alice (Deits) Cheek.

If Ira was trying to hide his blackfoot ancestry, why would all these records say the family was white? Sorry....still not convinced.

But then I can't find any other records on your grandmother - Cecil E. (Newhouse) Cheek. Do you know where she died?

In looking through the census records....Ira and his parents were listed as being White. Which makes me wonder if just your grandmother - Cecil was Blackfoot? Do you happen to know Cecil's date of birth?

I found the marriage record for Ira and Cecil....1 Dec 1920 Vigo Cty, Indiana.

"Find a grave" for Ira Melvin "Charles" Cheek lists two different cemeteries. So I would check with the county court house for a death certificate.

I didn't find Cecil or Robert in a 1930 Census record....were they still in Jasper County?
