When I'm working on genealogy - especially in Minnesota. I have several screens open with different data - like MNHS, find-a-grave, ancestry and family search.

Now I'm dealing with the Norwegian site - so finding records and then trying to intrepret them are my struggles. Guess I should have kept up with my Norwegian language years ago, all I remember is how to count to 10! lol

I did read thru their website - sounds like the kids were indebted until they turned 18. So, if James came in 1927.....he would have only had to work for 2 years.

Many of those children came to Canada at a much younger age!!

I have a one-year subscription with an UK genealogy website.....

When I input James McMahon's name and no birth date - there are 625 of them, from 1761 to 2005 (popular name).

If you have access to the British Home Childrens website - they must have someone you can contact directly for the answers you seek.

I found out that the first Seburn Thomas Hurley (that I know of) was born in England aroun 1840. I tried looking at those immigrating to the U.S. and found 2 Thomas Hurleys born then and arriving in NY on the same day, 9 years later, but that was the closes I could find to my ggrandfather. They were listed on two different ships. I know he was supposed to be Irish or Scotch-Irish. I don't know how to find out any more about him.

I have a trial membership on Ancestry.com and have been trying to find more information on there about both sides of the family. I haven't really figured out what I am doing, though.

Another thing to consider.....if any Scotish ancestors enlisted in the British Army, they would often be rewarded with land in Ireland.

My ancestors came from Longford Cty, Ireland and after serving in the Napoleonic War were rewarded with land in Quebec, upon their discharge.

My Egan (Eagan, Eaton, etc., etc.) Irish people came to Liverpool from Ireland. I've little luck finding much about them in England, and no luck finding them in Ireland beforehand.
On the other hand, I've made progress with the Cornwall Jago family. This week I received the official death registrations for two of them from the UK General Register Office, sent in the Royal Mail, no less! These are deaths of people in the 1860s, who were born in the 1700s. Before this time the Cornwall surnames become variable and iffy, so more difficult to be certain about. Also at this time, most people were signing their name with an 'X', so who knows what the recorder was writing down!

More than likely the opposite happened - Scotish to Ireland.

Most of Scotch-Irish were descended from Scottish & English families who colonized Ireland during the 17th century. Most of them immigrated from the Irish province of Ulster - when they came to the United States.

You said that he was 16 in 1927, which makes James born in 1911. The ship: Montcalm went from England to Quebec.

I did not find James arriving in the United States in 1932 at any port.

If you want a copy of this 1927 record, I can email it to you.

As for a birth record - there are eighteen different James McMahon's that were born in 1911. I viewed a few records and it says: Mother's maiden name not available before 1911.

I did a general search on the HURLEY name and there were over 22,000 people in the United States with that last name. Then I searched FLATBUSH and came up with about 19, mostly from Missouri.

If there is any searches you want me to try...send me a note with the specifics and I'll see what I can find.

Sorry, I spelled her name wrong. It is Crossno. No wonder I can't find things.

If someone answered the querry on that connection, do you think she would get it? I think the last one was in 2002, so I know it was a long time ago. Maybe if I searched for the other person that Cora married I could get more information on her side. I am not really sure how to search for more.

Is there any way someone who is on Ancestry.com can try to contact someone named Betty Krossno? She was asking about a Flatbush/Hurley connection (several years ago, unfortunately). Her ggrandmother seems to be my ggrandmother, or at least her ggrandmother married my ggrandfather. That is the first time I have seen anything on him (or her or their daughter) other than just a census. And somehow going back through something on there I found out my ggrandfather was born in England.

I cannot afford to get Ancestry.com, so cannot contact her through there and don't know where she is from to look her up.

And sometimes, many years later, you come across someone with answers to your questions!

I always knew that my great-great grandmother had brothers in the area. They first settled in Illinois and then all moved to Minnesota. But know this and finding them proved a bit difficult, until a couple years ago....I ran across someone doing research on the family and found out that a couple of the brothers took on the "farm name" from Norway, as their last name. When I inserted that.....I found them all in the census records, right where I imagined that they lived!

wow I made a breakthrough. I found the original document for the ship my father was on 1924. He was one of the British Home Children. Found Memorial for the children that died and it is beside nearly my fathers grave. one section away. so strange. lots of new info. I am overwhelmed. A great find. Doris

The DNA testing that Ancestry does is called AUTOSOMAL which looks at your entire genome - all 23 pairs of chromosomes.

The results will allow provide you with a genetic ethnicity map and be able to go backwards 100's of years....possibly thousands of years.

You must be a member of Ancestry to get this AUTOSOMAL DNA test and since the demand is very high right now, you will be placed on a waiting list.

If you have more questions, I suggest you goggle - Autosomal.

How far back can they go back on just my sample of DNA. My mom won't agree to it and my dad past years ago.

What? Why can't you use your DNA?

Has anyone else signed up to volunteer to help index the 1940 Census? I've been doing it for a few days and it's not only easy, it's lots of fun. Go to familysearch.org to learn more and sign up.

Hi, Ev.
Here's what I found out:
All other counties' marriage records for September 7, 1949 to the present must be requested from the probate court of the county where the marriage occurred. A list of county courthouse contacts is available at Ohio County Courthouse Addresses. The Ohio Department of Health maintains a statewide index to marriage records for all Ohio counties from September 7, 1949 to the present. You should contact the Ohio Department of Health at the address below for information concerning their request procedures.

Ohio Department of Health
Division of Vital Statistics
PO Box 15098
Columbus, OH 43215-0098
(614) 466-2531

They don't have this record available at the Ohio Historical Society here in Columbus. Only about three counties' records are available... Trumbull is not one of them.
I did see on Ancestry the divorce index for Evelyn and William Hager (extreme Cruelty), 20 Jan 1969. Also Evelyn's marriage to Douglas C. Woods, 19 Aug 1977, and their divorce 4 May 1990 (decree granted to both). Also she married in Putnam Co. Florida 12 Aug 2000, possibly to someone with the last name of Cruze.
Hope that's helpful...
Sharon

The DNA testing conducted by Ancestry is $99 for members. They look at all 23 chromosomes and can provide you with information on your maternal and paternal sides of the family.

The only down-side....it's in high demand, you are placed on a waiting list. So, who knows when you will receive a kit to complete the testing.
